Gruden would give Michigan a serious opportunity to win 9 games next year and he would be a killer recruiter. He has a great defensive mind and he's interested in the spread. Plus he's 47. There wouldn't be a more perfect get (at this point), in my opinion, save for maybe Gary Patterson.
CC: Gruden's Out There
IIRC, Gruden has only ever been quartebacks coach, wide receivers coach or offensive coordinator when he wasn't a head coach. I don't see any evidence that he has a great defensive mind (not saying I wouldn't be interested, just that defense isn't his specialty).
I don't think you have to be a defensive guru to have that kind of mindset. Like Harbaugh who obviously was an offensive guy, I feel like Gruden is a smashmouth type of guy who will bring a mentality that says "take it to the opponent." Don't have any doubt he would bring a philosophy of tough D and an offense that can grind it out in the trenches if need be.
He did have arguably the best defense ever (they allowed a ridiculous 48% of passes completed for the season) but that was mainly a construction of Dungy. That said I do trust that he would be able to find the right guys to run the defense far more effectively than we have recently come to know
Monte Kiffin at Defensive Coordinator. But yeah give Gruden the right coordinator and we'll be fine
In order to have a great offensive mind, one has to have an even better defensive mind. You cant run an offense without knowing what the defense is doing. Youre job as an OC is to study defenses. No question Gruden will shape up the Michigan D if hired. He wont be in charge of it but at least he wont make his DC run a defense he is not familiar with and one that doesnt work in the Big Ten. Im not hating on RR, I fully supported him, just merely stating a fact.
IIRC I remember hearing JG is a X's and O's genius. He knows a lot about both. He specializes in a version of the Tampa 2 on D. On O I believe it's the West Coast. He is mainly offensive minded but can hold his own on D as well.
He's also been studying Chip Kelly's spread very intensely. He seems to be fascinated by it so I wouldn't be shocked that if he comes here (big if at this point) he'd be incorporating variations of that as well.
I've seen this numerous times on the board. I would like to see where he said that (not doubting you). That would be awesome with Denard at the helm!
Yea, I've seen it a lot, too but I actually have seen him talking about it on TV. Wasn't on a specific podcast I could post or anything. From his MNF stuff he does seem to be a guy who loves to break down film so wouldn't surprise me if it's actually true. Definitely would be able to fit Denard into that which is a plus. I need him as my QB!
Here is a link where he talks about learning the spread offense.
Well luckily there is already a thread about this on this board from 2 hours ago that is 190+ comments long. That should give you a pretty good idea what everyone thinks.
That thread is all over the place. They're not talking coaching, they're talking media.
I don't know who "Harry Lomason" is...but
Gruden spotted in Ann Arbor...
I have a friend who texted us to tell us that he was waiting a table for someone who just interviewed for the job. He doesn't follow football very closely so he didn't know exactly who it was. We have been trying to get a description from him but he's still working. I'm now assuming that this is who he was talking about.
Are you serious, or is this another my friend is a waiter who overheard/saw someone post.
I'm serious. I wasn't going to start a rumor with this but I'm willing to lend credibility to one.
Ask him if he was blond!!!
And likes playing with knives.
If he ordered baby arms with extra dipping sauce it's Gruden.
This is almost identicle to the "My waiter friend overheard them talking about Harbaugh" right down to the "he doesn't follow football".
...and he woke up in a tub of ice with a surgical scar on his side.
Listen here, my cousins uncle is Gruden wifes friend and he said Gruden was meeting with Dave Brandon. No bull!
Some one else spotted him in Ann Arbor and I know that someone just interviewed for the position in Ann Arbor (as opposed to Baton Rouge or Scottsdale). For all I know there could be two coaches in Ann Arbor tonight and he got the other one. Take it or leave it. Like I said above, I'm not trying to start a rumor, only give credibility to it.
Seems as credible as the XXX just put a downpayment on a house (on the weekend) threads.
For what restaurant does your friend work for? I'll try to confirm...
I saw this as well, the whole story started that we were interviewing him in Arizona. So this whole thing is turning into BS>
Gruden.....I guess the biggest question I have with him is does he put in 5 to 7 yrs like Sneaky Pete did. I think none of us want him here for 3 or 4 yrs tops and then we have to go looking again.
If Gruden can give us at least 6 to 7 yrs then I think we can handle it. One thing is for sure he will run the hell out of the ball. Should be able to assemble a great staff and I think his personaility should be able to lure big time kids to the program.
Carroll was at USC for nine years.
I'd be leery of an NFL coach trying the college route. It's not really a similar job at all.
With Gruden I think it's all about his love for football. That is evident when hearing him on MNF. I think he wants to spread his passion for the game with the younger generation, what better place to do that than AA
Tom Brady. One word for Tom and it's a done deal. Put it on the board
I think the question to ask is what role the NFL coach in question played in player personnel decisions. In a lot of ways, a college HC is more like an NFL GM than an NFL HC. Case in point, Mike Sherman has been fairly successful at A&M, but then he was very involved in the front office in Green Bay.
"Won a Super Bowl" usually implies being the head coach at the time.
Had Super Bowl rings...although his were from Denver, not Oakland.
If someone can shed light, I would be thankful. What happened to Gruden at Tampa in the end. I remember that he was fired and what was the reason. If I remember right, did some players complain that he was too tough. For some reason I seem to think that, I am probably way off. Thanks for the help.
where 9 and 3 and we lost 4 straight games to end the season.
Ok. Thanks. So he didn't have any problems with players and didn't lose the team. I would think he would get another chance since he won a super bowl. Sorry, I don't follow the Bucs is why I am asking. If it was all about losses then fair enough.
it was because the players on the defensive side of the ball quit on the team.Alot of that had to do with are DC leaving for tennessee.
am a fan of the Tampa Bay,so i wouldn't mind him coming to coach Michigan, plus it seems like he enjoys coaching younger kids.
OMG I JUST SAW DAVE GROHL COMING OUT OF ZINGERMAN'S WITH THE SAME WOMAN WHO CLEANS BRANDON'S OFFICE'S BATHROOMS! I'M TELLING YOU, THIS IS IT!
cmon, just let us have our fun
Was Krist Novoselic also hanging out w/them?
watch him as he goes....
I mentioned to my wife that Gruden is now getting thrown around in association with the coaching position, and she said she'd sign up for the women's football academy just to see how Chucky runs it.
Yes, she said Chucky.
lol I'm loving the fact that your wife knows his nickname, even more so that she actually uses it in a sentence.
Married well. Kudos.
My friends would say this is further proof that I married way over my head, but I knew that long ago.
Great choice, surround him with some Michigan assistants like Chuck Heater and a few others who know college football and Michigan, and it would have a great chance to get us rolling again....
I'll cheerfully take back all of my sweet disses I put on DB's facebook wall......
All in for Gruden!
Reminds me of Calvin with his hair combed.
I presume you mean.
Makes up for loss of GERG's mane. Also, Rodriguez had crap hair so I think it is a big net upgrade, especially if Zooker gets fired and we can bring him in as recruiting coordinator.
All he needs to do is put on the flat brimmed block M hat. It covers the hair and placates the people that want another Bo.
His hair looks better there than it does here.
Anyone catch Les Miles' frock this week?
whoever the coach is. I have always thought a former NFL coach would be good here to restore the glory. I wanted Gruden or Cowher in 07. I used to work with a guy who went to UD with Gruden. He said even back then you could tell that Jon would be a coach someday because he carried a book he made up plays in and was "pound for pound" the strongest guy on the team. He also said that Jon told him to transfer if he wanted to play since my co-worker was not Catholic and would not see the field at UD. I never forgot that conversation from over ten years ago. Go Blue, hire Gruden. Make Michigan Child's Play!
I would give anything for Gruden to be the next coach at UM. He is my all time favorite coach so my opinion is biased, but the man is a great coach. He would be a great recruiter and would adapt to our personnel. He loves working with qbs and I believe Denard would stay if he were named coach. Gruden also has mentioned his involvement with the spead and becoming more familiar with it. Plus he has succeeded at the highest level of football.
Those who question him on the "dealing with kids aspect" should read some of his books. He prides himself on being a family man. He knows how to handle younger kids. He would be a great mentor, imo.
He would be a perfect fit and would definitely make us a contendor again. Im not saying next yr, although I truly believe we could win 9-10 games with him under the helm. Ive said this a couple times yesterday that Michigan is Gruden's dream job. I dont see how we can pass him up. DB dont let us down. Hire this man!
Is a much better coach than Brady Hoke. The only concern would be recruiting and I don't see Gruden having any trouble attracting kids.
If he comes I imagine we get at least 5-6 years. If it looks like Urban Meyer's 6 years at Florida I'm cool with that. Still, I don't think he'd be opposed to staying longer. He has nothing to prove in the NFL and it would take a lot to lure him away IMO. Folks thought Pete Carroll would go back from the day he got hired but he stayed 9 years. Can't really ask/expect more.
Also, having Brady Hoke as our coach forever is the scariest thing I can possibly imagine.
Gruden is an elite coach by any measurement, Hoke is not. Is there really a significant chance that a guy with Gruden's past success and media profile can't recruit 18 year olds? Those ESPN specials show he works great with young QBs. We certainly know 18 year olds have never heard of Brady Hoke.
I don't want the guy who will stay forever, I want the coach who will be successful. Anything after that is a bonus, especially after the last few years. Gruden is far from an unknown, and the guy won it all at the highest level. It's not even a question: based on the options out there, if Gruden is willing to come, you pay him whatever he wants and thank god someone with half a brain actually is willing to walk into this toxic environment.
Success at the pro-level does not equate to success at the college level, necessarily.
I have doubts about Harbuagh's success in the big leagues. We'll see.
Gave me shivers...
Tom Brady reference. Michigan LOCK!!
Wasn't that Griese wearing 8?
I want Gruden 10x more than I wanted Harbaugh no homo
and i for one like his firey personality.
Well I for one like his firey hair! Bring on the ginger!
Gruden was the front runner (inside source from SF HQ) for the niner's position. Along came Mr. Hotness Extrodinary who swooped in an accepted his offer.
The way I see this is DB has backed himself into a corner. If we don't sell Chucky he may take the Stanford gig. Les may decide it's not worth the headache. And Yes, we're a headache and soon basketcase if this doesn't work out - quickly!
I'm really trying to be patient with DB but it's getting harder and harder by the hour. A walk on base is not an option. He needs a hit and it better clear the bases.
I can't believe we posted the "Coordinator Option" on the front page. You have got to be kidding! Fire Rich to hire a Coordinator. Huh!
It's Chucky, Les, Stoops, or someone on that level. No less! No frackin less!
There is much to like, and nothing to dislike if the proper staff is brought in to support him.
This is a winner.
Gruden does not have a stable of commits to bring, but c'est la vie.
and it doesnt work out. i feel like his name would get recruiting back up enough that if he does get let go, it would leave a good foundation ala notre dame
not saying i want that to happen, but it seems like it would be better than maybe hoke coming in and not really lightning up the recruiting trails and then getting canned
Gruden would be a great recruiter. The man is a worker. He would do whatever it took to succeed. He was the youngest coach to ever win a super bowl or at least one of them. That didnt happen by accident. He is more than just a name. We are all talking about get the best guy out there right? Well, besides Gary Patterson, I feel Gruden is the best guy available. Sure he never coached at the college level but that shouldnt hold DB back. Gruden has been around college football for most of his life. He knows what its all about and like dsean said, he would be the top college coach. IMO.
5 star players are all about getting ready for the NFL... They would see Gruden as a great way to prepare. 4 stars and 3 stars fill in behind superstars, and we quit fighting over 3 star players and begging them to come here.
the nfl ties matter more than i ever imagined. that was pretty much weis's entire shocking effective recruiting pitch - show the kid some super bowl rings and tell him that he'll get nfl general managers on the phone to draft them.
gruden adds charisma, energy and name recognition to similar nfl credentials.
god only knows what the man actually wants to do - he's probably had plenty of college opportunities if he wanted them - i think he'd be a great college coach.
http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/jon-gruden-coach-michigan. Do research before you post man.
if sarcasm +1
if serious -1
Yeah, but you posted before it was cool. Timing is everything.
that Michigan fans crave. His offense centers around running the football and his main focus is defense. This combination would ensure the support of about 90 percent of the fan base. If for no other reason than that I would wholeheartedly support Gruden being the Michigan coach. However I still doubt very much it will happen, am seeing nothing credible to suggest it is possible.
I have no confidence that JG can run a program...he can coach, but can he do the other things a HC needs to do?
1. Tell me you wouldn't take "he can coach" right now
2. He seems to me like a younger version of Carroll, natural recruiter
Just close the deal with Gruden now and let's get on with things.
My only question is, will Jon Gruden bring in his brother Jay as OC, qb coach or none. I know that those two are really close. FWIW, Jay was HC/QB in the AFL and won a couple championships there. But as we all know, outdoors is different than indoors. Gruden showed a lot of enthusiam where it bordered dirty talk while talking about football to college/high school kids on his special for ESPN.
I mean, Jon Gruden's name pops up for LITERALLY EVERY coaching position ever created. You would have to think that if he really wanted a gig, he'd take it. And why would he settle for maybe 3-4 mil at UM when I'm sure he could get considerably more from the NFL.
I'm actually surprised it took a few days for his name to get kicked around.
Could he work out at Michigan: I'm sure he could. But he could easily say fuck this, I'm out... HAI NFL $$$! after a few years.
If people are looking for a potential long-term 'career' head coach, that's probably only going to come from a younger coordinator who happens to work out... it's a gamble that may not pay off immediately.
The other option is to go get someone short-term with a shitload of experience as a winner, and keep looking for the younger, long-term option.
Who knows what will actually happen. There really isn't anyone out there that would excite me right now. That could change.
Recruiting wouldn't be an issue. Did you see the speical he did on ESPN working with the high school team? He's a great motivator and terrific teacher. I believe he would have a lot of success here. Unfortunately, I think he's very comfortable at ESPN.
Gruden would be the best fit, and would bring in the toughness we need. He's my number 1 choice
Now, I know that there is a 99% chance that these tweets are false, but seeing that this is board does it's fair share of rumor-mongering, I thought I'd pass it along.
Someone just created a twitter account ("iluvblkppl", what a horrible name), and has an interesting series of tweets: http://twitter.com/#!/iluvblkppl
It's official. Jon Gruden will be introduced at 12pm Sunday as the new head football coach at The University of Michigan.
@iluvblkppl Gruden will also speak at halftime of the basketball game vs. Kansas tomorrow afternoon. Brandon hits a HOME RUN with this one.
@MrRager09 Yes. My sister's husband is driving the limo in which Brandon and Gruden are riding in on their way to the airport.
@nduemler We'll see tomorrow. It's just dumb luck that Randy is driving their limo. He was supposed to drive for a wedding that was cncl'd
@nduemler I guess they stopped off at Gruden's hotel so he could pack his shit. He picked them up at another hotel. Presumably Brandon's.
Sometimes, people are full of poop.
An LSU fan discussing Gruden as their "next HC"
"So I don't understand, no matter how unrealistic, why anyone would want Gruden. Any success will net NFL rumors every single year. This is supposed to be the time of year we're celebrating our victory, discussing rankings for next year, and recruiting. I want our next coach to be a guy that can be successful and not have a rumor about leaving every other year."
I know some M faithful thought the same about a potential Harbaugh hire--that it would be sweet but inevitably short.
I'll say it again tonight: something feels different this time versus coaching search #1 (and some of it is good)
