CC: Gruden's Out There

As many of you have heard, there is a rumor that Gruden is being interviewed for the job. He hasn't been discussed half as much as the other candidates, maybe due to the fact that people don't consider him a realistic 'get'. Now that this is swirling around, as are rumors about everyrhing and everyone, what would you guys think of having the former Super Bowl Champ as our HC?

I for one have mixed feelings. On the the one hand, he's a huge name which would attract a lot of media and recruit attention to our program. He has NFL experience and has won at the highest level. He's nationally heralded as great head coach and i for one like his firey personality. On the other hand, I don't really see him talking to kids about academics or homesickness/family issues. A lot of people underestimate how important it is to have that mentor metality in college coaching and I'm not sure if Gruden is that type of guy.

I will say this: I rather have Gruden than a 58 year old Les Miles.

"It has been my experience that those with no vices have very few virtues"

Gruden would give Michigan a serious opportunity to win 9 games next year and he would be a killer recruiter. He has a great defensive mind and he's interested in the spread. Plus he's 47. There wouldn't be a more perfect get (at this point), in my opinion, save for maybe Gary Patterson.

IIRC, Gruden has only ever been quartebacks coach, wide receivers coach or offensive coordinator when he wasn't a head coach. I don't see any evidence that he has a great defensive mind (not saying I wouldn't be interested, just that defense isn't his specialty).

Those who stay will be champions.

I don't think you have to be a defensive guru to have that kind of mindset. Like Harbaugh who obviously was an offensive guy, I feel like Gruden is a smashmouth type of guy who will bring a mentality that says "take it to the opponent." Don't have any doubt he would bring a philosophy of tough D and an offense that can grind it out in the trenches if need be.

He did have arguably the best defense ever (they allowed a ridiculous 48% of passes completed for the season) but that was mainly a construction of Dungy. That said I do trust that he would be able to find the right guys to run the defense far more effectively than we have recently come to know

In order to have a great offensive mind, one has to have an even better defensive mind. You cant run an offense without knowing what the defense is doing. Youre job as an OC is to study defenses. No question Gruden will shape up the Michigan D if hired. He wont be in charge of it but at least he wont make his DC run a defense he is not familiar with and one that doesnt work in the Big Ten. Im not hating on RR, I fully supported him, just merely stating a fact.

Gruden.....I guess the biggest question I have with him is does he put in 5 to 7 yrs like Sneaky Pete did. I think none of us want him here for 3 or 4 yrs tops and then we have to go looking again.

If Gruden can give us at least 6 to 7 yrs then I think we can handle it. One thing is for sure he will run the hell out of the ball. Should be able to assemble a great staff and I think his personaility should be able to lure big time kids to the program.

I'd be leery of an NFL coach trying the college route. It's not really a similar job at all.

With Gruden I think it's all about his love for football.  That is evident when hearing him on MNF.   I think he wants to spread his passion for the game with the younger generation, what better place to do that than AA

I think the question to ask is what role the NFL coach in question played in player personnel decisions.  In a lot of ways, a college HC is more like an NFL GM than an NFL HC.  Case in point, Mike Sherman has been fairly successful at A&M, but then he was very involved in the front office in Green Bay.

If someone can shed light, I would be thankful.  What happened to Gruden at Tampa in the end.  I remember that he was fired and what was the reason.  If I remember right, did some players complain that he was too tough.  For some reason I seem to think that, I am probably way off.  Thanks for the help.

Ok.  Thanks.  So he didn't have any problems with players and didn't lose the team.  I would think he would get another chance since he won a super bowl.  Sorry, I don't follow the Bucs is why I am asking.  If it was all about losses then fair enough.
