CC: Dan Mullen comments on CC rumors and Miss. St.
Apparently there are some websites devoted to getting Florida to fire Muschamp and hire Mullen. He called them "insulting to the job everybody does."
He also says of MSU:
One, both my kids are born here. I love Mississippi State. I've loved being here. I love the community. I love the state," he said. "I have a great administration. They've given us what we need to build a successful program. I think we've built that program. We love being here. That's No. 1.
Read into all of that what you will.

if you read between the lines you would get this:

Classic non-committals that have been thrown out before too many coaching departures to count at this point.

he never says "I'm not going anywhere". Lots of love though.

...says every hot name coach when he turns a formerly middling program into a top-5 team and could easily (and likely) leverage it into a bigger job come December. It's like there's a Coaching Search MadLib generator you can use to come up with these quotes when the time comes.

He's from Pennsylvania and his wife is from the Midwest. They may have "settled" down south, but geography won't be an issue.
October 16th, 2014 at 5:22 PM ^
His team is #1, and they still have a tough finish to the year. Whether he will leave or not, they don't want that distraction right now.
October 16th, 2014 at 5:34 PM ^
Being No. 1 is a problem in recruiting him. If he winds up in the National Chamionship Game, it will be impossible to be openly recruiting him (successfully) until well into January. We've been there before.
October 16th, 2014 at 8:04 PM ^
Exactly. Here's to hoping 2 out of 3 between Arkansas, Alabama and Ole Miss put 1 in their L column.

Yeah I mean its the equivalent of Hoke saying "I'm not worried about that right now, I have 115 sons"
October 16th, 2014 at 9:25 PM ^
hoke has 115 sons? even adrian peterson cant believe that..

So pretty much he will be the Florida head coach by Christmas.

It was the perfect response for a coach whose market value has probably tripled in the last seven weeks.

Want him.

That's coachspeak for:

He gone.

That made me laugh... Have we ever heard anyone say, "I am going to keep all of my options on the table and if a better opportunity comes along im going to jump on it"

Of the annoying white sox call guy when a white Sox pitcher strikes out a tiger.

One way (uf) or another (um) he is gone though.

I just cannot picture Dan Mullen coming to Michigan. Florida, maybe; he has strong ties to that university.
If I were him, though, I'd look to leave Miss. State. There were folks pushing Miss. State to fire him as recently as last year, and at the very least, he will have severe variance in wins/losses due to the competition in the SEC, and comparative disadvantage Miss. State has in recruiting.
October 16th, 2014 at 6:00 PM ^
"I know there was a website here at Mississippi State to fire Dan Mullen last year. Now there's probably one to keep me here," he said.
Much respect to the person who creates a site that states, "I am ambivalent to the presence of Coach X" because that could make for great satire.
In any case, he's having an excellent season and clearly doesn't want the distraction of being the hot name (well, one of the hot names) right now, which I can respect. I rather liked his comment about respecting what people put into a program, though I wouldn't think those Florida fans are doing this per se - just admiring the success, which is giving props to the effort in a way, IMHO.

"Good God would someone at a real school hire me already? Would you look at what I've done with Mississippi State? MISSISSIPPI STATE? We're #1? It's a freakin' miracle! Even I don't believe it. This is clearly not repeatable and there is no way I'm staying for the inevitable fall, so just line up your bags of money and tell me where I'm going."
Speaking the truth isn't always a good plan. Hence you get coachspeak.

Here's the plain English version:
One, both my kids are born here.
TRANSLATION: "There's not a snowball's chance in hell that my wife and I will be sending our kids to school here."
I love Mississippi State.
TRANSLATION: "But it doesn't mean I don't love others more."
I've loved being here.
TRANSLATION: "Please, please, please note the verb tense."
I love the community. I love the state.
TRANSLATION: "From where I sit behind the gate to the street we live on."
I have a great administration. They've given us what we need to build a successful program.
TRANSLATION: "And they'd better be prepared to pony up a lot more if they have any intention to keep me here."
I think we've built that program.
TRANSLATION: "Just think what I could do at Florida with those resources!"
We love being here. That's No. 1.
TRANSLATION: "I started repeating the list because I couldn't come up with anything else."

He has won all the games this year and he is the hottest coach for hiring..before no one even knew who Dan Mullen was or if MSU was even in SEC lol..the irony in sports
October 16th, 2014 at 6:51 PM ^
Weren't paying attention. He's not exactly lights out at MSU but the dude was a coordinator under Urban Meyer, has coached with Chip Kelly, and has had a lot of success just about everywhere. Mullen has been a household name for a while now
October 16th, 2014 at 9:10 PM ^
Wut? He has been a name for years. Now he is "the" name.

Well...I think Mullen wants to be there. No Question. I think there's been tremendous support with the fans this year...some. There's been a little bit of adversity last year and some of that, but I think he's got a bunch there now that know how to compete. No Question. They'be done a tremendous job for the kids there and I think that shows. Now I don't know if he likes Ann Arbor. Obviously there's some things with Florida. That's a little bit of a hypothetical because right now his focus is on those kids and getting them ready for this week. No Question.
October 16th, 2014 at 6:41 PM ^
Well...yes.
October 16th, 2014 at 9:18 PM ^
I can almost guarantee that Mullen is offered 1,2, or 3 real jobs this year, assuming they don't tank. Which they won't. Probably will lose three along the way, which isn't a tank in my book. If michigan or Florida offer , he's gone. Period.
October 16th, 2014 at 6:36 PM ^
It's almost like a guy might like the place where he is.
I'm sure people will throw money at Mullen and try to get him to go to Florida or UM, but who knows how this will play out. Reading these quotes really doesn't do anything either way.

of America is that these articles even exist. What's he going to say, 'yeah I'm totally out of here'?

"non-statement" from coach x.
October 16th, 2014 at 7:27 PM ^
Wouldn't it be nice if he meant what he said and stayed at MSU for a long time and made them a consistent winner?
Quaint idea, I know.
October 16th, 2014 at 7:30 PM ^
I still can't believe Ole Miss and Miss St. are top five teams. That would be like Indiana and Illinois of the Big Ten. The SEC is a revolving door of great teams along with great coaches year after year.
October 16th, 2014 at 7:59 PM ^
Really? Can someone post the treadwell's tweet with him holding that cash! Until it's even ground sec will always dominate.

when Iowa and Illinois produced top 10 teams. Then along came Wisconsin and even Purdue. The BIG hasn't always been a shithole of terrible coaches and teams.
The difference will be Illinois and Iowa go back to being Illinos and Iowa, Ole Miss and Miss State will go on probation.
October 17th, 2014 at 12:52 AM ^
I'm pretty sure Mississippi is blatently cheating. I think Mississippi State is doing it legit or at least whatever passes for legit in the SEC.

Whether it's Les or Mullen or any other current SEC coach.
First 10 minutes of the interview:
"Whaddya mean I can't arrange for boosters to pay recruits and their families to come here?"
It ain't gonna happen.
You don't want to make it happen.

Not to mention bring in and keep eligible players with marginal academic qualifications, including junior college athletes, and have ready access to players in Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Alabama.

No one loves Mississippi. No one. It is literally the worst state in just about every category. When I interviewed at a hospital in Charleston I asked about their patient population and they said the motto in SC is "Thank God for Mississippi."
