23 years ago was 1988, in which Michigan played in the Hall of Fame bowl with OL coach Les miles. Today, they announced the Hall of Fame inductees for MLB. Crazy talk.

On a side note, sorry to get away from the main topic but I can't start my own forum topic, here is a pretty good article by none other than John Bacon. It's a good read
where is that article you are talking about?
Haha thanks SFblue for posting that. Slipped my mind that i actually had to post the link....
just post it. every article doesn't need a new thread.
and no one except people using the iphone app can post new threads.
How is it that two of the guys most people would have at the top of their lists are claiming that DB hasn't even approached them yet? WTF is going on here.
"I have been contacted on multiple occasions and am deeply considering the proposal"?
I have no inside information about anything whatsoever, but taking everyone's public statements at face value during a coaching search is a good way to go mad.
This is looking like a disaster... I hope I'm wrong though.
He spent last night and today determining candidates, and developing a plan of action. He will probably begin implementing that plan by contacting various coaches as soon as tonight, definitely by tomorrow.
If he really hadn't even thought about starting the search for a new coach until yesterday, he was right that he "has a lot of work to do"
to give any thought to who he might hire as the next head coach he is more incompitent than I thought. We had been without a coach for a few hours by that time. Did he really wait until after he made the decision to fire RR to even consider who might replace him? That can't be true.
David Brandon said in an interview yesterday with Bernie Smilovitz that he had put together a list of potential replacements a year ago. He has also actively taken people off and added people to that list. This is something ANY good business manager does. At any point one of the key people within the organization could leave, and he needs to be prepared to make a replacement.
if that is the deal breaker for DB I am going to question his ability to run the AD even more than I currently do (which I wouldn't have thought possible).
There's still a lot of talent in the Midwest - especially Ohio. We haven't done a good job of locking it up lately. The Florida pipeline only partially compensated for it.
There's still a good amount of talent to mined in Ohio, followed by Pennsylvania and Michigan. But we didn't exactly own the region under RR. Neither did Hoke, Miles, Patterson, or Fitz. Hoke and Fitz are Midwestern guys. But Miles and Patterson have name recognition. It's a wash. So we might as well just pick the best coach, overall, and go from there.
I'm pretty sure RR has signed more Ohio guys per class than Carr did.
... wouldn't that be nice to get a foothold in?
I'm hoping that while he himself hasn't been contacted, there has been agent and intermediary talk. If there has not been, then Brandon is really dropping the ball.
I was just going to post that. In all likelihood, stuff will go through intermediaries until things are getting close. If I recall correctly, Martin and RR's agent did the initial negotiations. Only when mutual interest was clear, did the direct meetings and discussions take place.
Just b/c DB hasn't contacted him yet doesn't mean there hasn't been contact through back-channels (e.g., agents, etc.).
because DB is playing XBox COD4 until... i dunno... day before signing day and then appointing Fred Jackson head coach.
or... you know... this interview was carried out at 10 am EST, 9 am CST and Dave Brandon FIRED THE MICHIGAN COACH YESTERDAY
"uh yeah, i came to the conclusion of firing the head coach on Tues night but i actually have talked to 7 other possible replacements before giving him the axe. sure this is a repeat of the embarrassment Auburn faced regarding Tommy Tuberville but I'm dave brandon, i roll bitches."
plausible deniability is a benchmark of college football - people ask FOR dave brandon. that's why real world hires take 3 weeks to vet prospects while coaching changes take 2 days. implying Dave Brandon's incompetent bc these people are saying they haven't been offered is just flat out asinine.
a potential coaching candidate says they have not been contacted, does not mean they have not been contacted. You can talk to their agent to gauge interest as much as you want without actually talking with the potential coaching candidate. That way in reality the coaching candidate can realistically deny any knowledge of contact with a potential suitor.
He used to be a CEO, I'm sure DB knows how to search for, and hire candidates for a job.
Well, that wasn't a no...
That's how I read that comment. "Crossing that bridge" implies he would at least listen.
If he wasn't interested he would likely have come right out and said he has not interest in leaving to shut it down right away. Saying he will cross that bridge when he gets to it makes me think he may have more interest than many believe at this point.
Seriously, if JH isn't coming this is who I would want if anyone asked or cared...not that they do, but oh well.
"He also added that he hasn't thought much about Michigan and that he'll "cross that bridge when he gets there""
That's actually somewhat promising in coach-speak. Hoping we pursue him. He's at the top of my wishlist and don't really wish to see either Hoke or Miles here.
It is indeed telling...
Seriously though, I think it is.
"He also added that he hasn't thought much about Michigan and that he'll "cross that bridge when he gets there""
Sounds interesting....he definitely didn't say no or out of the question...
I don't understand why Miles is out of the running. I know he is crazy but he kind of fits everyone's individual needs.
1) MichMan (whatever that means)
2) Proven Winner
3) His teams perform on both sides of the ball.
4) Good recruiter.
Miles is essientially out of the running because of some shenigans that went on during his time here. He is not in the good graces of many influential people in the Michigan program.
I have read that he and Dave Brandon do not like each other at all.
He was one of the architects of "over-recruiting," and this year ESPN ran a damning story about how Les fucked some of his own recruits by coldly rescinding their scholarships in order to get the numbers right.
Some on this board have accused the Hat of dirty/sleazy recruiting tactics during the LC years. I don't know whether this is true. But the first point certainly is.
Given that we're now on probation, I don't think Coleman would want to get near anyone with grease marks.
Having spent time around LSU (3 years) it’s clear that, as every LSU fan will tell you, "a retarded monkey could coach the team and win 8 games". Miles has an insane recruiting advantage at LSU and a level of talent not found at Michigan. In other words, LSU’s talent base is a major advantage Michigan doesn’t have. Miles is a decent coach at best. LSU is the star, not miles.
If LSU's advantags are so great, why did they struggle for decades?
It seems to me that schools create their own advantages by building on success. Once Michigan is back, Michigan's advantages will seem obvious, too. At this moment there don't seem to be advantages because the program is struggling.
If LSU begins to struggle it won't seem that they have as many advantages as it does now.
I think I understand why Miles is out of the running. There are numerous considerations, some of which were underscored by Brian's pithy analysis in Hostage this morning:
Les Miles? Do I need to say this about a grass-eating nutcase pushing 60 who can't count to 85? In case I do: Les Miles should not be happening.
Whether Rodriguez was ethically challenged or not is a subject of much discussion. However, despite many noble qualities, he certainly gave the appearance that his obssessive drive for success sometimes pushed him outside of ethical boundaries.
There is no such confusion about Miles. He granduated summa cum laude from the William Jefferson Clinton School of Situational Ethics. Which is not necessarily to say he would be ineffective if wins and losses were the only measuring stick; Bill Clinton was a successful President in many ways. (Or Slick Willy was, depending upon your political leanings).
AD Brandon made it clear that no candidate will be considered who does not do things the right way - the Michigan way, which is with integrity and honor - and who will be the worthy caretaker of a billion-dollar brand. Brandon wants wins, but not if it costs the university its image or its soul. So that, ipso facto, disqualifies Miles. And this without even considering the "grass-eating" or "nutcase" or "pushing 60" factors.
Indeed. Patterson should be top of the list after JH. I think it'd be a real coup if we could get him.
I read that statement and thought, "DB better get out the checkbook and on a plane to Texas...NOW!"
Much better than, "I'm the coach at TCU and will continue to be the coach at TCU"
seriously, who has DB contacted at this point?!!
or their reps have contacted him
I'm not sure he would tell us anyway. He really has that office on lockdown.
THIS IS A TRAVESTY THAT I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY WHAT'S GOING ON DURING THIS HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL AND NATIONALLY REPERCUSSIVE JOB SEARCH!!!! I MUST HAVE FULL DISCLOSURE OF ALL TALKS REGARDLESS OF THEIR RESULTS, AND UNLESS BRANDON GOES PUBLIC WITH EACH AND EVERY PHONECALL AND EMAIL HE MAKES IN THE NEXT TWO WEEKS I WANT HIM GONE GONE GONE GONE!!!!!!!
RABBLE! RABBLE RABBLE RABBLE!
Though I will say that its better we have people vent on message board than go to schembechler hall and yelling at Dave Brandon.
Dey took er jobs!
Dey ernt took er job!
Straw man much? One could just as easily write:
I LOVE DB HE IS AWESOME AND I TRUST THAT NO MATTER WHAT HE IS DOING AN AMAZING JOB. EVEN IF IT IS BRADY HOKE IT WILL BE BECAUSE HE IS THE BEST COACH IN THE COUNTRY AND WE JUST DON'T HAVE THE INFORMATION DB HAS. IF WHAT MICH DOES LOOKS GOOD FROM THE OUTSIDE ITS BECAUSE DB IS A GENIUS; IF IT LOOKS BAD ITS BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ALL THE INSIDE INFO.
And somehow I feel like people would be talking past each other.
haha i agree with you all the way about the insanity, but in all fairness, this is a pretty huge decision for dave brandon and michigan football, and we as fans are very curious to know what's going on, regardless if we deserve to know or not.
that being said, i have tapped dave brandon's phonelines, and he recently just ordered domino's pizza. 2(!) large pepperoni pizzas. perhaps he is meeting someone??
All sorts of Dolphins blogs are reporting that Harbaugh's a done deal, and the Rooney Rule is the only thing keeping the announcement. Supposedly Sparano and staff are cleaning office right now...
EDIT: Here's a report that cites ESPN's Chris Mortenson (his spelling, not mine).
We have our own blog to start rumors. Ready set go
Why anyone, even Ross, is willing to pay that much. These salaries are out of control. Sure, Harabaugh is the 'hottest name in coaching since coaching' but to make him the highest paid coach even before calling a play in the league seems crazy.
The again, if I had billions, I would probably spend it as well.
We just need a John Navarre sighting and then the space-time continuum might just cease to exist.
i heard someone saw sparano shredding documents
Shame for such a genius comment to go unnoticed. Kudos and a +1 from me.
pretty much the exact same thing about the 49ers yesterday as well (sans cleaning offices), so ....
harbaugh-lust, like hope, dies hard...
Well that blog is now also stating the following:
"Sparano has been recently rumored, although I believe them to be unfounded, to possibly be heading to Michigan to coach the Wolverines. One of the reasons they say he has been hanging around. My source doesn’t believe it but stated he didn’t know one way or the other. He has also been rumored to have interest in UConn as well."
Seems not likely at best.
If DB doesn't give him a call, he's a moron. But I'm sure he will. It sounds like Patterson would at least think about coming here.
Don't most athletic departments use a search firm to put feelers out there? If Patterson explicitly said "Dave Brandon" it's a good way to get around things if it was a firm that contacted him regarding his interest in the job. It's all about what people say and how they say it.
we he hasn't been contacted. that doesn't say anything about his agent.
He will start after LSU's bowl on Friday when he can contact Miles. If he says no, then he goes to Hoke.
I only go by what the MSM has told me bc they know all.
I am only kidding about that, but will Urban Meyer be a serious candidate in anyone's opinion? It doesn't seem likely to me but you never know.
A fan base that just chewed up and spit out a coach for underperformance and a man who just left his job due to stress and a heart condition does not make a perfect marriage. Plus Meyer is a scumbag.
I was just wondering if he would be considered. I no way feel he should or shouldn't be.
I thought the heart problem was acutually more of a gas/indigestion issue. Also, he left "to spend more time with his family."
My question would have been better stated - Since he has listed ND, O$U, and Michigan as dream type jobs, would he have interest now that the job is actually open? Maybe his family would take a back seat to a dream job.
He does have baggage (arrests, Cam Newton, etc), but he has 2 MNC's, recruited Denard, and ties to the midwest.
Maybe Tim Teabag talked to the big guy upstairs about fixing his heart? /s
Second that. Especially your last statement.
that's a good comment. if he had no interest at all, he would have said so....unless he wants to use it to negotiate for a raise.
On another note Luck is returning to Stanford next year, does this impact JH?
I understand that he wants to get the degree, but when you really have the chance of going #1 you should take it. $80 or close to it could get your name on the stadium at Stanford.
Even if Patterson was contacted, would he really have informed anyone, let alone some random radio station? He's trying to keep his own recruiting class in place, not lose goodwill with TCU, etc. so unless an offer is in hand, no potential candidate is going to say to the media "hey, Michigan called."
He's not losing goodwill at TCU, he's smartly responding in the affirmative (by not shooting down the possibility with a "I will never, ever leave TCU") so that he can leverage the supposed outside interest to get a bigger contract there. Or, he's being sincere and perhaps would consider the job here.
For years to come may seem enticing, but TCU won't finish any higher than 2nd this year after going unbeaten and beating up on the lowliest conference may not get the team over hump in the future. If Brandon contacts Patterson, he might want a new, and better, challenge.
Would an undefeated TCU in the Big East be playing for the National Championship over undefeated Auburn and Oregon teams this year? No. Big East is a step up, and he can get BCS auto-bids, but he still has a good chance of being on the outside looking in more often than not. Not so in the Big Ten (esp. at Michigan).
Patterson seems unlikely considering he's poised to dominate the Big East for the next decade, but money does talk and if DB offers him $4.5 million per it'll be hard for him to say no.
Just throwing this out as an idea, but one name I haven't heard at all is Paul Johnson from Georgia Tech. Dude has won whereever he's been, runs a Denard-friendly offense, could bring in Shannon or whomever as DC and wreck fools.
Again, heard this with Louisville and then welcome to suck by year three.
I don't think the fans who despised the institution of the spread would feel any better about the triple option....
It varies, but over the long haul the flexbone - that was the original name back at Hawaii 20 years ago - calls a TO about 20% of the time.
Its an interesting thought. I'd guess Hopkins would be the B back. And maybe try to convert one of the excess WRs to slotbacks.
And PJ would have to hire a good DC.
I question whether its a good fit for our current OL. Getting Lewan on MLBs would be fun to watch though.
They really could dominate the Big East right now unless it upgrades a little bit, but after this past season, I would understand if Patterson is sick of being on the outside looking in. He might still have the same problem in the Big East though. That would not happen at UM.
Did RichRod and Kelly turn down offers when they had chances to dominate the Big East for years to come?
Paul Johnson really seems to have plateaud. Just because his offense can be assembled rather quickly doesn't mean it really puts us in a position to be an elite program.
I think that Brian has the right idea.
I like that Patterson quote, FWIW. Sounds like a man who's not opposed to the idea. Terrific coach. No sleaze-factor. Recruits would be impressed. Anyone would consider him a great choice.
I think he's a great coach, but I don't read anything into that statement.
In past seasons, he usually shot down job rumors pretty decisively. He didn't say, "Well, we'll see." That's the only reason.
So you're saying we have a chance?
I'm not sure what it is, maybe blind optimism, but maybe everything is being played very close to the vest. They don't owe it to us to tell us the truth about everything, do they? That being said, I fear we are royally boned.
It's like high school, and JH is your hot friend that you have a big crush on that you want to ask to prom. The two of you get along fine and you plan a big extravagent way to ask her. You wait a few days to work up the guts to do it, only by the time you have it set up, she gets asked by the quarterback. You say you're happy for her, but it didn't matter anyway, because you'll always be "just a friend" to her.
So you start to get antsy because prom is coming and you have no date. The unattractive girl that annoys you but always hangs on you starts dropping loud hints about nobody asking her and since you wasted all your time planning for the hot girl, all the other girls have dates. You finally decide that going with the ugly girl is better than not going at all, so you take her and you have an okay time. Meanwhile, you see your hot friend dancing with the quarterback and you die a little inside.
We're taking Brady Hoke to the prom.
Speaking from experience...?
attention to detail in explaining this scenario suggests that perhaps it happened to "somebody you know," true?
I like to think I have a big imagination and good writing skills. this has not happened to me, though haha.
This is exactly how I explained the situation to my son. Hoke is the go-to-girl in case the hot one(s) is unavailable. We'll have a coach by next Tuesday and it will either be a hottie or Hoke.
I'm OK with either as long as DB tries for the hotties first.
but we're paying them...
does that make them hookers?
... "cross that bridge..." means that he is open to conversation. You'll have to assume he will be contacted. When he does, he will listen. That's the big thing.
he'll "cross that bridge when he gets there".
IF THAT ISN'T AN INDICATOR OF FUCKING INTEREST I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS. SHIFT YOUR ASS INTO HIGH GEAR BRANDON. PATTERSON WOULD EVEN THE PLAYING FIELD AGAINST OSU AND MSU IN A SNAP
build Gary Patterson a bridge
The talent in Texas and Louisiana would help, while adding a staff member with ties could open doors for a new coach. but we do not know anything as of yet do we.
If JH is out of the picture I'm starting to warm to Patterson. I miss good defense so frigin much.
Starting to warm to Patterson? It shouldn't take you long to warm to a guy with a 36-3 record over the last three seasons with wins over Wisconsin and every mid-major worth beating. Personally he has been at the top of my list- Harbaugh's Michigan connections were the only thing putting him ahead. Patterson seems like a Michigan type of coach, even if he doesnt actually have any formal Michigan connections.
It seems that he has only spoken to Jim Harbaugh and Brady Hoke!
this mean he will give us a shot or he will just let it go in one hear and out the other.
I have no idea if we've got a real shot with Patterson. But getting him would definitely be a home-run. Maybe better, in some ways, than getting Jimbo. Jim has the charisma and momentum -- he'd clean up on the recruiting trail right now. But Patterson has a long and proven record of success, on O and D. He's spread-friendly. And he doesn't come with Jim's Narcissism, drama, and NFL-lust.
that this whole "Coaching Carousel" is a ploy implemented by Brian Cook and Dave Brandon as a means to show Rich Rodriguez that he needs to take better strides for fixing the defense and special teams than he has been. The firing was just a wake-up call to Rodriguez to show Brandon is serious, and he has full intentions of reinstating Rodriguez by the end of next week, but only if Rodriguez takes away Greg Robinson's coaching license and hires Rex Ryan as the next defensive coordinator, while giving him free reign as to who the defensive/special teams coaching staff is.
Now please don't find and shoot me because that will make me wake up.
im all for someone to fix the defense, you don't make a comment that DB said about the ball boys being able to play d. And not hire a defense minded coach that has success, Tough not to have B. Hoke there. On the other hand, DB does say he will pay money for the right guy. So hopefully a GP is in consideration. Although leaving the big east, and bcs bowls that will be guaranteed would surprise me.
TCU has a chance to be maybe the No. 2 or No. 1 team (next season), depending on what poll, in the nation. Maybe we are one of those people (elite programs) now. That's what I've been trying to build the program to get to. Michigan has a great tradition and is a great university. I'll cross that bridge when I get there."
How? TCU is losing 8 of 11 starters on offense, and 7 of 11 on defense.
Why is everyone assuming they'll be good next year?
