CC: Bob Stoops?

Submitted by MGoVoldemort on

Dan Wetzel suggests that Michigan should pursue Bob Stoops. Dan thinks that if Coach Stoops were going to leave OU, there would be no better time, and no better place than Michigan. While I would never say never, this appears about as likely as a Freaks and Geeks reunion show. Which now, come to think of it, begs the question why there isn't a Freaks and Geeks reunion show, but I digress.

He's been out there for 14 years, why would he laterally transfer to Ann Arbor?  I mean he'd have to shop for a snow shovel, rubber boots, snow tires...

My brother went to OU.  He says that like a third of the students are from Texas and have never seen snow before, so the first time that it snows every year it's hilarious to see all the people from Texas biting it as they attempt to walk to class.

My brother also claims to have been part of a (low speed) 8 car crash at an intersection in Norman because people there aren't very used to driving in snow.  Apparently the cops just showed up and had no idea how to assess who was at fault so nobody got a ticket.

yeah fuck that guy and his 166 wins, National Championship ring, 8 P5 conference titles, 9 bowl wins, 5 coach of the year awards, 2 Heisman Winner QBs (with two other finalists)... not MICHIGAN material

I don't think I'm being a Homer here, but I think many coaches are looking at this job. 1) We're pretty stocked with talent, 2) there's going to be a new AD who is going to make it his business to help you succeed (since he hired you), 3) underachieving teams tend to overachieve with a fresh coach out of sheer relief. If they get a half-decent coach, I think instant success is a real possibility.

I live out of state, down in the south. People's perception of Michigan is wildly different than Michigan fan's perception. They believe that they lacked the talent to compete with the big boys right now and don't have much NFL talent on the roster. They know that it is a bit toxic around the football program.

I used to like Wetzel, but this article smells a bit of mailing it in.

This line:

"The perception around the NFL is that if he's let go by San Francisco, a shot with another franchise (New York Jets? Oakland? Miami? A new L.A. team?), featuring more control and money, seems far more likely.

The Jets?  LA?  There isn't even a team in LA.

I could see him staying in the Bay area with Oakland.  I could even see him taking the Falcons job.  But if more control is what Harbaugh wants, where would he get more control than in college?

I swear, I think writing bullshit articles about the next Michigan football coach has become its own cottage industry.

Isn't basically every movie Judd Apatow makes a semi-reunion of Freaks and Geeks?

But yeah, probably not going to happen with Stoops.  And again, Michigan needs a guy who either makes a large part of the  fanbase happy (i.e. a Harbaugh) or someone who is young enough to stick around (Stoops is 54, would be almost 55 by start of season) and (you'd hope) have some roots in the area.  Stoops would be a big hire, but I just think a part of the fanbase would be bothered by an outsider.

Yeah, but he hasn't been active in the area for since he was at Kent State in the late 80's.  Yeah he's a national name, but as we've heard before local coaches can be finnicky and need some relationships to form.  That's my concern with the age stuff; is he going to be willing at this point to put the work into transitioning from his Texas-heavy ties to the Midwest footprint.

I agree Wetzel is kinda making this one up.

I'm not sure if the fanbase would revolt, but the same group that keeps harping on "Michigan Man" probably won't be happy if Michigan goes for Stoops when there are a couple Michigan Men out there (Harbaugh, Miles) who are conceivable candidates, unless guys like Miles and Harbaugh turn them down formally.  That seems unlikely.

The crowd that's supposedly clamoring for a "Michigan Man" is becoming a bogeyman type character.  Is there a single poster here who's insisting that we hire a Michigan Man just for the sake of hiring a Michigan Man?  I get that a lot of people want Harbaugh, but Harbaugh would be a terrific candidate for any college job.  I feel like there are 100 posts per day complaining about all of the people demanding a Michigan Man coach and 0 posts per day demanding a Michigan Man coach.

Maybe this is an issue with some former players or with whatever part of the Michigan fan base doesn't post here, but I really don't see this major part of our fan base that's demanding that only coaches with Michigan ties are considered.

people here really don't understand what a "Michigan Man" is. it's not meant literally, as a guy who worked or played at Michigan before but instead a "Michigan Man" is somebody who embodies the what Michigan stands for, which is a man of integrity and one who will coach and win the the right way. In short, someone like Bo and not like Urban Meyer.

Bo said it b/c Bill Frieder was going to bolt to ASU after the tournament

in that context, it meant someone who wanted to be at Michigan for the long haul

"A Michigan man will coach Michigan, not an Arizona State man."

THAT IS THE WHOLE QUOTE - please do not use it out of context!

Anyone can be a Michigan man - if they are willing to committ themselves 100% to the university and act at the very highest levels of integrity!

Prefers coaching at highest level for competitive reasons, wife may not want to move to Michigan, he may not like recruiting...really there are a number of reasons why he wouldn't want to come.

The truth is no one knows what Harbaugh wants. Everything that has been discussed is other's conjecturing what Harbaugh desires.

Even if his departure from the 49ers is a foregone conclusion, Michigan would be competing with at least a half dozen other NFL teams for his services (including one right across the Bay, at which he started his coaching career), all of whom can offer more money and a higher level of competition. Even Michigan's supposed trump card, the opportunity to have absolute control over all aspects of the program, may not be such a trump card in light of the precedent set by Pete Carroll's deal with the Seahawks that made him coach and GM. Harbaugh probably has the leverage to negotiate a similar deal.
