I can only read part of this article, but this is the second article in a matter of days that suggests Stoops ought to leave Norman.

If he does come available than he(in my mind) is 2nd or 3rd on the list. He fields good defenses, runs a spread, and has a national title. If Harbaugh is a no-go than Stoops would be a very strong second option if he is willing to leave Norman.

Stoops has won big, and has done so without reasonably good conduct exhibited by those involved with his program. He has recruiting ties to the midwest, and to Texas and Oklahoma. This one is a no-brainer: Offer him, and see what it will take to get him here. As BlueCheesehead from Wingedhelmet would say, he'll unite the fan base, and we can forget about the various factions and clans of Michigan supporters.

Good luck with that.  He's got no Michigan ties and I don't see what would attract him - it's going to be tough to get a big name coach given the last 7 years or so.

Those people are gone. Lloyd is no longer an associate AD or whatever and is golfing somewhere, DB is gone etc. Basically you just have a bunch of former football players who I doubt are going to say anything and if they do then who cares? The fanbase just wants to win.

I certainly do agree with you about Rich Rod, but I think the lesson has been learned. The "Must have Michigan Man" crowd got what they wanted and it was a disaster, so I don't think they have much as much cachet or ability to gum up the works behind the scenes this time around.

Really? How did the Tressel show go? No one gave a rip about that. Somehow, it is ok to dump everything on Tressel, as if the Athletic Department did nothing wrong. Urban didn't think anything about it and he came. Didn't he? So, it will all workout if he likes the money and the options he gets.

At least in the eyes of most of football people. If the Hoke Floats debacle hasn't silenced them, Stoops sterling record will. However, I doubt any of them would do anything to Stoops consideirng his track record. RR does not have Stoops cache, a fact you strangely seem to be unaware of.

"Urban Warfare:"  If David Brandon was still here, you would be correct.  But all it is going to take is one competent AD to turn the Michigan Job from its current degraded position to what it should be: one of the top five jobs in football.

Michigan has the most resources of any program in the country.  They have great tradition.  They have the biggest stadium in college football.  They have won more games than any program in college football.  The only thing they don't have is a bunch of SEC-style boosters to buy players, but an honest coach will appreciate that.

Any coach would at least listen.  The question is going to be whether a new AD can convince a new coach that the neanderthal segment of the alumni who sacrificed seven years of Michgan football just to get rid of an "outsider" don't control the program.

I think it should be painfully obvious to the people who ruined it for Rich Rod that their shit caused the program's current state of dishevelment.  I also think that the next AD will build a lot of "reassurance" into an ironclad buyout clause that fairly compensates the coach if he is forced out.

If a competent AD is hired, Michigan should have their choice of almost any coach in the country.

to Rich Rod is peanuts compared to what happened to Gibbs, Schnellenberger, and Blake.  None of them were named Switzer and the fans and alumni weren't having it.  At least over the last seven seasons Michigan will have had at least four winning seasons, something pre-Stoops, Oklahoma didn't enjoy.

not to mention what regularly goes on in the SEC...  I mean really, just think about everything that has happened at Auburn since like the mid-1980's. Just sit down and read about Auburn football over 30 years. And then come back and tell me how Michigan is a poisoned well.

is similar to our current Michigan program. A program that was use to winning a lot but got put on probation by Switzer. Then Gary Gibb could never get the program on track, always losing to TX and NE! Howard came in for one season and flopped. They hired an OU man, Blake who could recruit well but for three season could not get OU over .500. Hoke reminds me of Blake, a good recruiter but an awful HC! Blake recruits helped Stoops to do so well in his first two season including winning a NC in 2000! I could see a good coach coming in and turning around our program fast!

I think there are a lot more doors open than you might think at the moment. There's no indication that we're not going to throw shit tons of money out there if we needed to do so, and between that and the honor of being "The Coach Who Turned Michigan Around", I would imagine a fair number of top tier people would at least listen. That, and I think the "Michigan ties" thing died a peaceful death sometime during the Miami (OH) game.

Michigan could get him.

The truth is that any of the top football programs by revenue (#1 Texas, #2 OSU, #3 Michigan) could pay a LOT more than they are currently paying in coaching salaries.

Of course, the universities are reluctant to shell out big increases if they don't have to, but at this point, Michigan's $85 million annual football cash flow is at risk.  Going with a proven winner for $7 million (heck, $10 million for Harbaugh) may very well increase the present value of the cash flow stream versus going cheap (~$4 million) for a so-so hire.

Now, as a culture, Michigan would be one of the last to chase a top notch hire with $$$.  But desperate times call for bold moves.

I thought it was strange that Wetzel posted an article about Stoops to Michigan out of the blue. I get the sit-click motivation, but Wetzel isn't really like that; most of the Yahoo guys are excellent. I'd still put the likelihood of it at less than 10%, but it's interesting.

Here's a more likely read: Bob wants leverage. He makes $5 million a year, which is going to continue to be dwarfed in the college football arms race. He has ties to both Florida and the B1G, it is within the realm of conception that he might listen to offers from either us or them. Maybe he feels like he needs more investment either in himself or in the program generally.

It is worth making a phone call to be sure, and if he says no to us it's maybe worth hoping he says yes to Florida to give us a clearer shot at Mullen or some of the slim pickings out there after those names come off the board.

I literally was just reading that article before I came here. Bob stoops is def 2nd on my list after jim. I think because of a change of scenery, he could have this team be scary good.

It'd be tough to choose between Mullen and Stoops for a number 2 option if both where in play. Stoops obviously has the more sustained success but can't seem to put it all together for an entire season. Mullen, while performing a miracle and having Miss St in the #1 spot, hasn't proven he can stay on top (yet). I would be extremely happy with either should Harbaugh not happen.
