CC: Bizarre Finish Leaves 49ers 4-4

Submitted by Geaux_Blue on
After allowing the Rams to hang around all game, the 49ers actually fell behind at home 13-10 with approximately 2-3 minutes remaining. In a bizarre series of plays involving pass interference, holding and a near-score, SF had the ball on the Rams 1 with 19 seconds and a TO remaining. Kaepernick fumbled the snap into the end zone for a touchback and Rams win. SF now sits far back in their division at 4-4 with two games remaining against a desperate Seattle team, a game at New Orleans and two final home games against Arizona and San Diego. Given that multiple talking heads have said Harbaugh wouldn't return even with a Super Bowl win, the timing is becoming a little convenient for those who believe UM has a shot with a coach who may be hungry to get people remembering how great of a coach he's been in the past...

I imagine's Schlissel response would be something like that "I know how important athletics are to the Michigan family and I trust [New Athletic Director] to run his own department"

As long as the budget is balanced and it isnt interfering with the University, Schlissel doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would care much

Doubt it. I think Schlissel is smart enough to know that spending a few extra million for a coach that would most likely get Michigan back to playing at an elite level, would be an investment that generates returns far greater than the cost. I mean, just imagine if we stuck with Brandon and Hoke and the team continued to regress in the coming years. The demand, and thus value of tickets would only fall more...maybe even to the point where just ONE(!) bottle of Coke is worth the price of two tickets. In that scenario, the football program would end up producing much less revenue than it traditionally has. Like, $10-$20 million less, annually.

Also, just look at the basketball program. When John Beilein took over, they were bringing in no more than $8 million per year. That number's more than doubled now; the revenue from last season was greater than $16 million. So I'd say the extra few mil given to Beilein and his staff was a good choice.

At first glance I thought the headline said the game ended in a score of 4-4. My dream score! But seriously, it's starting to come together, Pepper. It's starting to come together.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't there a significant recruiting dead period during the holidays and bowl games?  Not sure if it is extended at all due to the college playoff, but with that dead period I don't think there would be significant damage with waiting until the end of the NFL season unless there is a significant playoff run.

I was just remembering the good old days - the Harbaugh QB days - when there were so many students in the student section that we were stacked on both the benches and the ground, and no one sat the entire game. Saturdays absolutely revolved around games, even away games. I would love it if Harbaugh was the one to bring that back to Michigan.

If Schlissel sets the ceiling for a new coach at 4 million, he'll become the anti Brandon and have marches on his house but this time they'll come for him. After what I saw of him during the press conference, he's not stupid. The funding for a football coach doesn't come from academics anyways.

The university can pay a base salary and donors make up the necessary difference and maybe after a couple nat'l titles they can pay off his mortgage.  I've heard that has happened before.

Who's saying he can't go back to the NFL later and win a superbowl. With someone with a big ego like him to come back to Michigan restore the program maybe win a national title then win a superbowl seems like it would be awesome.

Yeah I think this is a good analogy. JH has Carroll's trajectory except with Midwestern intensity rather than west coast cool, stylistically. And JH is ten or so years younger. JH has a lot of green in front of him (not taking about $$$).

Well, the timing on all this is working out just fine.

On Dec. 26, a 6-6 Michigan team meets an 8-4 Central Michigan team in the Quick Lane Bowl at Ford Field.

On Dec. 28, the San Francisco 49ers play their final game of the season against the Arizona Cardinals.

On Dec. 29, Jim Harbaugh announces he's leaving the San Francisco 49ers.

On Dec. 29, Michigan athletic director Jim Hackett fires Brady Hoke.

On Dec. 30, Jim Harbaugh is named the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Head Football Coach.

This is fine but a bit inconvenient for JH.  So I propose we invite ourselves to the Kraft Hunger bowl IN SAN FRANCISCO on Dec 30th and Jim can be all decked out in his maize and blue in the stands leading to his hire on Dec 31st.

The situation with the Niners front office and JH is such that the Niners losing is neither here nor there. It all comes down to what is in JH's heart. If anything I think Michigan's chances are better if JH wins the Super Bowl and gives Baalke a massive wedgie on the way out.

Jim is it. John falls into the "If we can't get Jim, then I would settle for..." group. Don't care that he has won a Super Bowl. Jim is uniquely suited for this job at this time. Also don't care about how he takes job or when. I would feel bad for Brady and 49ers if it was tomorrow, but would get over it like one second later. Hell, I would take him August 1st if came to that
