CBSsports: Harbaugh not interested in Michigan job

Submitted by michgoblue on
For the latest in Harbaugh news - this less positive - CBssports claims that "sources close to the coach maintain he is not interested."

Keep in mind that the article is primarily focused on the possibility of Harbaugh landing with the Raiders, does not name a source and is generally NFL focused, but still not encouraging to read. Aside from the above, the article also cites the usual "family doesn't want to move" and "family close to Hoke" reasons for his unlikeliness to move.

As with everything to date, take this for what it is worth - likely, not much - but I have noticed a greater number of not-going-to-happen comments from national media types lately. Obviously, there is a huge echo chamber effect with the media needing to fill a complete void of information re: Harbaugh or our search, so stories will often written with little to no actual information.

If nothing else, these posts basically reporting rumors and half-truths from "sources" must help Brian with pageviews, so at least something positive is coming out of this.

As I've said before, I have my doubts about Harbaugh coming to Michigan, but some random guy at CBS sports writing 500 words of no substance is even below Colin Cowherd in terms of credibility, which is saying something.

We'll know if Harbaugh is in or out once he signs with another team or coaches at Michigan.  Anyone else with sources "close to Harbaugh" or "close to the AD" are just blowing smoke until then.

I hope we get Harbaugh. Aways been worried some GOOD NFL team other than Raiders or Jets would come out of the woodwork and snatch him form our grasp, but that is something that you just can't control.

The longer tis drags out with no official comment from Harbaugh the better I feel.  Unfortunately he can't say anything until December 28 if it's yes and Hacket doesn't want to say anything prior to that because it looks like he didn't make a full run at everyone's #1 choice.

Unfortunately I just don't see it happening.  Nor Stoops or Miles.  Don't like it but I think they take a flier on an up and coming coach that no one expected, like the other two major schools did (welll sort of RIley was has been around a long time).

Maybe his dream job i the Dolphins (he did grow up in the 70s) and Ross told him coach at Michigan, develop a protege you can always come and coach in Miami. Wait that's ridiculoso.

I think these people are "copying and pasting" other articles and putting their name on it. There is no evidence or direct quotes that change their story from anyone else's.

I hate to be a debbie downer here, but I think some of the irrational posts and desperation here needs to stop.  We're starting to look like a bunch of overentitled crybabies who think we deserve everything when in fact there are serious problems with this program now.  In short, we are turning into ND.  Can we stop?

Instead of insisting that Harbaugh take our job, why not put yourself in Harbaugh's shoes.  There's only one person that can decide to come to Michigan.  It's not JIm Hackett, and it certainly isn't you.

Put yourself in Harbaugh's shoes.  He's likely to have multiple NFL offers, not just from Oakland, but probably from the Giants and a probably another team.  Look at the Michigan situation from his angle.  It's the only one that matters.  Without arguing about pros and cons, tell me, can you honestly say that Harbaugh would come to the conclusion that he should coach Michigan?  I doubt that you can.

Really, it depends on what is most important to him. Pat Fitzgerald coaches at Northwestern because it's his alma mater and he wants to see the program succeed. Maybe Jim has feelings like that about Michigan?? Who knows? He could come back here, right the ship, feel like he accomplished his goal, then go back to the NFL before he's 60 and try again for a SB. If UM is his dream college job, then it will be harder for him to say no than some people think. But none of us know that.

Schiano = 80k attendance, Hackett is not that moronic. I, and many other former season ticket holders and donors are waiting to see what happens. If it is grade D coach like Schiano we won't be getting season tickets. My decision for 2015 season tickets and future donations to the athletic department depends on this coaching decision. I will still be donating to my academic department.

I just can't see it being Schiano -- based simply on Sam's comments during the show the last couple days last week. He effectively concluded that Shiano's name is in the hat, but he is not a fan of this second tier coach.

Sam needs access and giving the thumbs down to the next head coach may shut his door. So my guess is that Sam has heard enough that gives him some comfort to neg Schiano.

A guy who actually works for the NFL itself towing the party line.  Shocking!

Its like the PSU fans that said O'Brien wouldn't leave for the NFL.  If you are looking for sources on a coaching rumors don't listen to the employer of the coach.  If the coach is leaving they would be the last to now. It just makes sense.

this is why twitter's limit on length of tweets is important:

...U-M left convinced he wanted to be an @NFL coach before the U-M job opened up, at which point he changed his mind. They are now negotiating the final details of a contract to bring Harbaugh home while putting up a devastatingly effective smoke screen for idiot tweeters like myself.

The media will again ask Harbaugh about Michigan today at today's post-game press conference, or at least at his next mid-week presser.

Harbaugh's reaction to more inevitable Michigan questions in press conferences will be infiniately more illumianting than any national NFL media claim of "sources close to Harbaugh..."

At a mid-week presser this past week the press failed to corner Harbaugh on the Michigan question.  When asked about Michigan, Harbaugh gave that standard 'focused on the 49ers' coachspeak.  In response to the follow up by the same reporter, JH stood silent for a moment until another reporter asked a question on a diferent topic.

Either today or at his mid-week presser, the media will again ask the Michigan question and probably not allow Harbaugh to again evade a direct answer.

If Harbaugh again refuses to say "I am not a candidate for the Michigan job"  then we will know almost for sure that Harbaugh is at least considering Michigan.

Of course it would not be binding.  But I never claimed that it would be binding or that it would give is a definitive answer one way or the other.

What I said is that JH's responses and/or non-responses to furher press questions on the Michigan job will me more illuminating than national NFL reporters' claims of "sources close to Harbaugh say..."

When (not if) the media asks the Michigan question in a way that does not allow Harbaugh to evade, JH's response will be among the most telling, and possible the most telling, information on the subject.

But I never said it would be binding.

I agree that JH will either say "I am not a candidate for the Michigan job" or he will play it close to the vest and be as evasive as the press allows him to be.

Either way, JH's response will be telling.  Not definative, but telling.  And certainly more useful than all of the vague claims made by national NFL reporters so far (except maybe the very recent the Ian Rappaport stuff).

If Harbaugh plays it close the vest and gives a non-committal answer (refuses to clearly and unequivocally state that he is not a candidate for Michigan), it would suggest that (1) he is considering or at least undecided enough about Michigan that he does not want to publically repudiate it, or (2) that he is using Michigan to maximize his bargaining leverage (a topic that many posts have already discussed, with several doubting the JH would do this).

I have never claimed that JH's response or non-reponse will give us THE ANSWER one way or the other

My only claim is that JH's response or non-response will me MORE USEFUL information than boilerplate claims from national NFL reporters who give non-specific information based on "people close to the situation say..."

The Ian Rappaport stuff from this morning, unfortunately, is more specific than any of the other stuff put out by national NFL reporters and, therefore, might be more believeable.  I hope Rappaport was fed bad info by people angling to get JH to the Raiders.

The article says his family has ties to the raiders? Wtf.. And that Stephen Ross from the dolphins wants him?? Didn't most of these stories say Ross is writing the check or assisting in getting him to Mich?

This article claims as part of its reasoning that he doesn't want to move his family and then says the Dolphins are candidates to get him? Also didn't Stephen M Ross already say that he will not go after Harbaugh bc he belongs in AA, his home??? This article doesn't make sense to me

Albert Breer just tweeted that Harbaugh didn't like how he was brushed off during the 1st head coaching search and may still be holding a grudge over it.

Can't wait until all of this is over!!!!

He does not even claim "sources close to Harbaugh say..."

He just says "Word on Harbaugh has been...," whatever that means.

Moreover, the claims in the Breer tweet (JH not pleased with 2008 search and 'geography') is so far removed from a specific thumbs up or down on Michigan in 2104 that is it basically useless.

Does not mean that Breer has guessed wrong.  But it does mean that this particular tweet is very weak evidence.  Basically useless.

The Ian Rappaport reporting is more credible (unfortunately) because he claims specifically that his sources tell him that Michigan inquired and left with the impression that Harbaugh wants to stay in the NFL.  And me makes that claim while Rich Eisen (Michigan grad) interviews him on Harbaugh's future.

The Rappaport reporting is far from definitive.  But of of all the NFL reporters' info, this is the scariest, to my ears at least.

I hate this stuff.  You never know who to believe.  I am choosing NOT to believe the reports that Greg Schiano is near the top of the alternate choices.  Because if true we are definitely screwed.

These threads do read like a bunch of teenage girls who are in love with Dreamy Jake Ryan, and he's...LIKE...definitely coming to your birthday party with a cake. I'm a teenage girl right now too, but I'm just saying, all this HE WILL COME is getting more than a little creepy and Veruca Salt-y.

And the Vegas betting line suddenly dropped from 8:1 to 2:1 before it was finally pulled altogether. So do you believe numerous people willing to put large sums at risk on the proposition that he IS coming here, or a CBS guy who cannot even cite sources. I suspect that every agent representing someone even remotely qualified for this job is stirring the pot in search of a big payday, and they're manipulating the press (especially the really hapless ones) like Sharon Stone working the cops in Basic Instinct.

This is six degrees of separation. The JH version. No one has yet to connect the Hackett to JH 1:1 annnnd JH looks to still be waiting to say anything relative until he finishes his current job. Which, doh, still has a few weeks left. Speculators gonna speculate.

So, Harbaugh doesn't want to rub salt in Hoke's multi-million dollar wounds

And, he'd rather spurn Michigan and all those concerned with Michigan in his life and not take the post of Michigan head coach that he would otherwise be interested in

CBSSports is a fucking idiot!

I would be shocked if Hackett doesn't know whether Harbaugh will entertain offers from Michigan by now. At the very least, that question must have been asked and answered. If it's a no, I'm not interested, then Michigan knows and moves on. If it's a possibility then Michigan probably knows that too and maybe waiting to present him with a formal offer when the time is right. At this point, the two major vacancies are filled and there's no competition at the college level for the Michigan job, so the longer this goes, I have to believe that harbaugh said he's interested and they're waiting to negotiate/offer until the time is right.
