CBSsports: Harbaugh not interested in Michigan job

Submitted by michgoblue on
For the latest in Harbaugh news - this less positive - CBssports claims that "sources close to the coach maintain he is not interested."

Keep in mind that the article is primarily focused on the possibility of Harbaugh landing with the Raiders, does not name a source and is generally NFL focused, but still not encouraging to read. Aside from the above, the article also cites the usual "family doesn't want to move" and "family close to Hoke" reasons for his unlikeliness to move.

As with everything to date, take this for what it is worth - likely, not much - but I have noticed a greater number of not-going-to-happen comments from national media types lately. Obviously, there is a huge echo chamber effect with the media needing to fill a complete void of information re: Harbaugh or our search, so stories will often written with little to no actual information.

Why would you want to destroy your career coaching the Raiders ? Also, this is nothing new, he says the same fluff stuff about location , and the part in the article about Stephen Ross forgets to mention Ross wants him at UM.

Gruden went to a team that had the talent to win a Super Bowl.  The draft picks, though, were a major problem.  Giving away two first round picks and two second round picks pretty much ensured that the Bucs would begin to suck the year after the Super Bowl, which they did.

Why would Harbaugh want to go to a team that needs to rebuild but isn't going to have any decent draft picks for two or three years?  The Raiders set the precedent themselves by getting two first rounders and two second rounders.  They would have to give away at least that much.

However, if Harbaugh doesn't go to Michigan because of family ties to Brady Hoke, it would mean that David Brandon fucked up two coaching hires in one.  Now THAT is an accomplishment...

My god you can find anyway to tie your hate of Brandon into anything. I didn't get cream in my coffe, must be Dave Brandon's fault, he used to be the CEO of dominos and I'm buying coffe at McDonalds so he was a CEO it must be Brandon's fault. If Harbaugh doesn't want to come to Michigan useing his ties to Brady hoke is just an excuse. Not a reason.

Agreed. It makes no sense. What successful coach would willingly go to the Raiders? Especially one that wants complete control. He may not come here but it would be a major shock if he went to the Raiders. Have they hired a good coach since they ran Grudenout of town 14 yrs ago? And I also discount his wife wanting to stay in the Bay Area. That will give him one option and its a mediocre option at best. Who would sabotage their career cause they like the area? If he went to the Raiders what would happen in 2 years when they fuck up the draft picking combine wonders and he's left with a team he doesn't want? Not to mention, would San Fran really trade him across the bay and watch him possibly be successful with their crosstown rival?

If he was using Michigan as leverage against the NFL, he would want them to believe he was interested in Michigan, there in they would pay him more to stay in the NFL. There has two be two options for leverage.

he's a hot enough commodity that he's got leverage everywhere and stringing Michigan along would only help him marginally, if at all.  However, I don't know enough about his Niners contract, so maybe the "back to college" option is more valuable a card than I understand.

He doesn't *need* the leverage. And considering it's his alma mater, which surely he still loves (does he want to alienate all of his friends who are Mich alums and former teammate?)...

I guess what I'm saying is he wouldn't string M along unless there was a real possibility he's coming home.

Agreed.  Even if Harbaugh doesn't end up with UM, I don't think he has contempt for the program, so once he was certain he didn't want to come here, recognizing that the delay was hurting our coaching search, he would say so (unless he is simply using our offer as a bargaining chip in NFL contract negotiations).

Either way, the only one who knows for certain is JH, and the fact that he didn't say anything dismissing the UM means that we're still in it.

Until then, be cool.

I wonder if the NFL powers that be are threatening Harbaugh with 'If you leave the NFL for college, there is 0% chance of you EVER getting a job in the NFL again."  There are too many 'NFL Experts' that are saying that there's no chance of him leaving the NFL, so if he does, they all look pretty foolish.  There's a lot of pride and ego in the NFL and to have 1 incredibly sought after man threaten to leave for the 'lower league' would piss off a lot egos.

Any threat that he would never return to the NFL would be completely empty and he knows it. He is too good of a coach and has had way to much success at all levels for owners not to make a move for him if he becomes available again.

In addition the pride and ego damage done to the NFL by a coach leaving would be like 0.000001% of the damage already done this year. I can't believe this is the thing they would take their stand on.

"I wonder if the NFL powers that be are threatening Harbaugh with 'If you leave the NFL for college, there is 0% chance of you EVER getting a job in the NFL again.""
And how exactly could that be a threat? Do you think some owner desperate for a coach would avoid hiring a proven winner just because he took a college job once?

NFL owners want to win, not hold some senseless grudge dictated by 'the powers that be".. Aside from the obvious exposure to collusion charges, does anyone think Ross would be a party to this blackballing? The NFL doesn't have to resort to that kind of nonsense to maintain their position in the world of sports.

It still doesn't make sense, but I think the difference there would be that Pete Carroll was nowhere near as successful (33-31 with the Jets and Patriots) as Harbaugh has been. Carroll was fired for poor performance after his Patriots were sliding downward.
