Another great article on Hoke and the new atmosphere at Michigan. Also, I got my season tiks today. I'm trying to remain objective, but I have to admit it's hard not to drink the Kool-aid.

Why does every Michigan article, publication and video game developed by someone not connected to the program have to use "big blue" in one form another?  This drives me crazy!

Go Blue! or Let's go Blue!

vs.

Go Big Blue! or Let's go Big Blue!

Not even bringing up the point that Big Blue is the nickname of various other established football teams, of course it is annoying to actual Michigan fans.

I think you answered your own question - it starts with peeking out of your definitional cave to see what is going on in the broader media. The anti-Big Blue crowd are troglodytes living in their own imaginarily constructed world of what is the 'correct' ways to refer to Michigan. I am sure there is a lot of overlap here with the folks who reject the #1 jersey as a Michigan tradition because it doesn't fit their definition.

The anti-big blue crowd cites "getting it mixed up with Kentucky" as the main reason to not use the name.  If this is the major issue, why would you have a problem with it being in an article about Hoke.  Pretty hard to mix that up.  Also, Bob Ufer referred to Michigan as "Big Blue" on occasion, thats good enough for me to make it acceptable.  I don't really use it, but I also don't flip my shit when others do like a lot of posters on here.

"Getting it mixed up with Kentucky" or IBM has only ever been a problem in the minds of the anti-Big Blue crowd. I have never ever heard of that actual mistake being made. Plus, its easy to see why we get the Big Blue label - we are known to chant "Go Blue", our colors are maize and blue, we are known to have the "Big House", and, I would argue that "The Wolverines" or "Michigan" as our only credible monikers don't exactly roll off the tongue. "Big blue" is a tight little alliterative moniker. Its both complementary and complimentary. People should get over themselves in denying it.

This question has been discussed numerous times. Antipathy toward "Big Blue" has absolutely nothing to do with "getting it mixed up." That is fucking idiotic.

It has to do with using another team's nickname. Michigan is, or so the thinking goes, the "leaders and best." Why do we need to use Kentucky, NYG, or IBM sloppy seconds for our nicknames? Maybe we should call ourselves "Blue Nation" and throw in a wolverine chomping motion with our arms while we're at it? After all, no one would get us mixed up with Florida, right?

I dont see it as sloppy seconds - that would have us believe that the others you named used the name first. IBM used the name in the 60s or 70s. I'm pretty sure that Ufer was announcing before that. I dont know when Kentucky or NYG used BIg Blue, but we even if we assume Kentucky used it first - so what? I see it as an upgrade for that name when applied to us, rather than sloppy seconds for us. We dont have to refer to ourselves as Big Blue, but complaining when others do smacks of petty insecurity.

"Big Blue" is stupid and here's why:

Not because we get mixed up with anyone or anything.

It's stupid because it was started by that idiot Corso and it has caught on in the media.  I don't know about you, but I think the media should leave nicknames and traditions and customs to the people actually involved with them; that is unless you like calling Darius Morris "The Butterfly."

Second, it adds to the generalizations of Michigan.  We are not like Penn State - we shouldn't try to be.  I don't want ANYONE calling Michigan fans "Wolverine Nation" and start pumping in ACDC instead of the Blues Brothers from the band.  We don't need to resort to the silly, meaningless, cliched "media-speak" that perpepuates many programs.

Third, (Arrogant Alert!!!) nobody on campus or involved with the program uses it.  It's really that simple.

*Hoke Speak* We're Michigan.  Let's not lower ourselves to stupid nicknames, furry monsters running the sidelines, and "Wolverine Nation."  Because the first time I hear "Wolverine Nation" inside the Big House instead of "Maize and Blue Faithful," I'll throw up.  The first time I hear "Big Blue" instead of "Michigan" or "The Maize and Blue," I'll throw up.  We have two colors for a reason.

And finally, I can see it now: Nebraska uses "Big Red."  They always had.  I'm going to yell at my TV when some media jock who thinks he's being smart says "It's Big Red versus Big Blue.... presented by Applebees."

Nice article.  Although it was kind of insulting to mention that we ended up with Hoke only because higher profile coaches turned us down.  I don't want to open old wounds but wasn't Hoke Brandon's first choice?

It's also really sad that we have fallen so far the last 3 years that we actually need a countdown clock for the Michigan State game.  But it is what it is.  And if Hoke motivates the team to make Sparty the #2 team in the state again, just like they were for 80% of it's history, so be it.  And the way he talks about Ohio State and how much he talks about them, he sure sounds like Bo circa 1969.

I really like Hoke.  I hope everything works out and he can make Michigan look like Michigan again.

Go Blue!  Always!

Bo wasn't the first choice either but he was the right man for the job. A Mr. Joe Paterno actually was contacted first and turned the job down before heading to Penn State. Bo wasn't even 2nd or 3rd as I recall it being said, but he sure was the right man for the job- just like Hoke. Can't stop a driven coach with their focus and heart in the right place. What ever happened to that guy, anyway?

Hoke and Mattison are bringing the hope of a great team and great seasons back to Michigan. The last time Michigan got a coach that brought hope and tradition back to the forefront of Michigan football, he had a winning record against every team in the Big Ten and brought the Big10 titles back to AA- went by the name of Bo. But Hoke and Mattison bring something else to the table that Bo never had- National Championship coaching experience! Both Hoke and Mattison bring that as assistants on Natl. Champ teams and they bring the hope, experience and tradition of Michigan excellence too! Go Blue!

Michigan will rise again

I can just imagine Hoke standing at midfield with his eyes closed, pointing at players and yelling them to hit harder.

Not to be a dick but the dude behind Demens is #23 Floyd Simmons not Hemingway. Also that is not Kovacs, but #28 Matthew Cavanaugh. The guy behind Hoke is I believe Jibreel Black (Schofield is a 6'7'' white kid who would be a couple inches taller than Big Will) Every guy that appears in the line is a defender . . . . very appropriate by the way that Hoke is standing next to a bunch of D liner's and LB's!!!
