CBS All-American Awards: Trey Burke 2nd Team All-American, 1st Team Freshmen All-American

Great to see the wonderful recognition.
Hopefully he isn't lured away by the big money from the D league. We need him and THJr here for another 2 years.
It's part of why D-Mo decided to leave (OMG A 6'4" point guard!) and part of why Trey will stay (He's only 5'11'').
Also, last year was a very weak draft and this year's is a strong one - with the lock out lots of potential draft picks didn't go last year (another reason D-Mo went) so the pool of draft picks is even bigger this year (another reason Trey will stay).
True, but to play devil's advocate, which PGs would get drafted higher than Burke right now? One can argue that Damian Lillard (Weber State) has a higher stock than Burke right now, but who else is there? Dion Waiters is a combo guard. Marquise Teague is not your typical Calipari PG and probably needs another year or 2.
Trey seems to have all the tools right now to be a successful PG: court vision, a pull-up jumper, speed, passing, etc. The only thing he lacks is his size and he is not getting any taller. I doubt he jumps, but waiting a year or 2 will not make his stock any higher (see Ty Lawson).
Right now I would say Lillard, Kendall Marshall, Casper Ware from LB State, Isaiah Canaan from Murray St., and Austin Rivers would all go higher than Trey.
Also, doesn't Ray McCallum out of Detroit play PG? Burke's size and inexperience have also led to numerous turnovers this year which would only be exacerbated in the NBA. Granted it might be easier to develop and overcome these issues in the NBA, but with the draft class as is, it would seem best to wait at least another year.
But he can get better in delivering assists more consistently. And with the freshmen class arriving this fall, he's going to have some great new targets. That will raise his draft stock. I don't see him staying another year after that, unless the team sniffs the National Championship, and he decides he wants that legacy. He's like a second son to Sullinger's Dad (his old coach); BBall is in his blood. And his family's not hurting for money. He definitely won't go pro this year.
bad news for you on the two more years thing with Burke.
Hopefully, we get at least three years to watch him play in the Maize and Blue.
REALLY? How about Frank Haith who led Mizzou to 30 wins in his first year? The writers coming up with these awards for CBS sports are just jokes.
Except for the writers who nominated Burke as a 2nd Team All-American, right? Right? Heh.
To be honest though, I couldn't say that Izzo didn't deserve it at all. I don't remember a pre-season poll that had MSU in the top 25, so I would say that they out-performed expectations. However, Frank Haith definitely wouldn't have been a bad choice either.
And I'm not saying that all of the 'awards' were off-base (off the top of my head the only PG who could be have challeneged Burke was Austin Rivers (albeit he was far less valuable to his own team loaded with NBA talent). But we were in up in arms when Izzo beat our Beilein and Crean when both M and IU were clearly less talented teams. I just don't understand the love affair the media has with Izzo. Yes he is a great coach, but his team was still loaded with talent, even if they were not preseason top 25 teams. Neither were we or IU.
IU wasn't ranked, no, but we were anywhere between the 15-25 range on most sites (#24 on CBS pre-season top 25 - just looked it up).
Anyway, I agree with you. Most sports analysts do have a crazy love affair with Izzo, which more than likely contributed to him receiving the award. And I do think their lack of pre-season hype had more to do with their terrible 2010-11 season than the talent on their current team. I just have a hard time finding arguments for why he didn't deserve it when they clearly had a phenomenal year (share of B10 reg. season title & tournament title).
Can't say I understand why they included that bit about Branden Dawson in there too.
Still, somehow, the future Hall of Famer won a Big Ten regular-season title and Big Ten tournament title while earning a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. That's strong -- especially considering Michigan State lost Branden Dawson in the regular-season finale.
Oh dear lord, they managed to win 4 games without a player, wow that's really incredible!
Now the 1st team all-big ten makes even more sense now.
Said the pcisk for 1st team all-big ten point guard were horrible from the start. a typical suck-up to seniors, even though the freshman is actually better than them.
wasn't that espn? cbs has trey 1st team all big ten.
Than a final four run this year and I will be traumatized for a long while about the what-could-have-beens if our PGs would have stuck around.
Hoping beyond hope he stays but I have a feeling we're going to hear articles about "testing the waters" in a matter of weeks. :(
Holy shit, I didn't expect 2nd team AA. What a colossal accomplishment. Burke earned it, great to see all his hard work pay off.
Even though he has been really excellent all year, I did not imagine he would be that highly recognized nationally. I am super impressed.
He's a slightly better Dominique James, no way he should leave for the NBA til his last year unless he has a growth spurt.
Congrats to Burke. I'm excited about him in the backcourt for the next 2-3 years.
Great for Burke and the Michigan program to get such lofty achievments. It shows future recruits that we can get our players national attention and respect.
Congrats to Trey!! That is an awesome accomplishment. I didn't expect it, but he is well deserving.
I think people are understandably paranoid after Manny and D-Mo both left before they should have, but this is not the same situation IMO.
First off, Many and D-Mo have superior size, allowing them to leave before their game was fully polished. Burke doesn't have that luxury. He is a great player but still needs some work before he is NBA ready.
Second, this draft class is loaded.
Lastly, he seems like a much more grounded kid who is likely getting better advice than D-Mo and Many did (nothing against those two guys). Satch Sullinger plays a large role in Trey's and that kid from Ohio's lives, so Jared staying for a second (and even rumors of a third) year I think bodes well for what kind of advice Trey will get. Basically I think he will be getting better advice than D-Mo and Many did from his support system. He doesn't need to rush to the NBA, and people will tell him that.
I still would not be surprised if he inquired about his potential draft stock this year - it would be foolish not to. I do not think he will leave though.
I was thinking the same thing about Sullinger staying and Trey getting similar advice.
