!!! Carroll- staff erred with too complicated of a scheme for players

Yo Pete, call the Godfather of your child and drop some of this knowledge on him as well since we are are experiencing some of these same issues with the same scheme. Substitute Illinois for Oregon in the below before you realize that you really can't since one is a really good team and the other, well, isn't. Anyhow. Via the Los Angeles Times USC coach Pete Carroll said he and his staff erred against Oregon by restricting the defense with a complicated scheme that caused less-seasoned players to play too cautiously.

Are our schemes too complicated, or are our players too inexperienced or not talented enough to execute them? I would say that USC and Michigan lost these games for different reasons

Not talented enough for Michigan. And Pete Carroll didn't appear to outscheme himself to me, what i saw was USC getting physically moved off the line of scrimmage by Oregon's line. People talk about all these complicated schemes and junk, but in the end it's knowing a small amount of bases and being able to execute your techinque properly. Bama runs 1 Deep robber almost the whole game, and it works because they smack the crap out of you and play the football. The only error i saw in gameplanning was not keeping Masoli contained. The "outschemed" excuse works because of USC's recent history, but don't be fooled, USC got handled on all phases of the game by Oregon.

This could not be any more right. Oregon simply beat USC in every facet of the game. Coaches were outcoached, players were outplayed, and Autzen is still one of the toughest and best venues in all of college sports. It is unfortunate that Oregon laid such an egg in their first game because that team when firing on all cylinders like it was on Saturday could hang with and beat just about anyone (SEC included)

Did you see Oregon go with the long handoff pass that Penn St killed us with?? On replay the CB was 12 yards off just like Warren, the LB to that side bit on a fake by Massoli and didn't get to the flat giving up an easy 10 yards. I think it was Herbstreit who then pointed out how the LB screwed up. I was thinking yeah we saw it in defensive breakdowns and picture pages all week we know the D. I guess it's a good sign that Carroll was running the same d as we were. At least we are not on a island with some bizarre theory on how to defend the play.

I am a bit concerned regarding a few glaring weaknesses that seemingly just are not fixed and the issue this D has with the spread. I understand that USC struggles to replicate it in practice due to their offensive systems, I am astounded that we are not tweaking our defensive schemes against it.
