Carlo Kemp moving from LB to DE

Submitted by Gentleman Squirrels on

As reported by Adam Biggers:

True freshman/early enrollee Carlo Kemp is headed away from linebacker and toward defensive end, per Jim Harbaugh.

I figured this may happen since he seemed to still be growing into his frame and Brown is more of a smaller LB type. Definitely means we need to hit the LB spot in recruiting this year.

Brown likes smaller, faster types on the outside but he certainly doesn't mind a larger-than-normal MIKE. I think this is a good sign for what he has seen so far at LB, because Jones just moved back to DE too. I think it means that DB has evaluated and thinks our talent is at least good enough that a true and redshirt freshman don't need to play out of position to provide depth. I think Gedeon, McCray, Fur Bush, Devin Bush, and sometimes Peppers will be a fine LB core that may even look above average at times thanks to the rest of our D.

You could take this as a bad sign for DE, but since the staff is willing playing Wormley at 3Tech, and we've heard a lot of good things on Taco and Winovich with Gary yet to come, I think we feel we are good at DE too. Maybe I am too optimistic about this fall, but I think Don Brown has taken in our D and said "Holy F*%#, I am finally coming into a position that already has talent".

I'd expect him to be ready to contribute by the end of the year. Also I want to keep Jim Leyland on retainer to say his name, every time, in every instance that it is spoken, forever.

That's a lot of underclassmen at DE.  Marshall, Winovich, Jones, Johnson, Kemp, Johnson... am I missing anyone?

Are we differentiating between DE and Anchor?  Has Taco been playing exclusively at DE or more at Anchor or both?

Obvious from day 1. Never for a second believed he'd be a LB. He's a WDE and could actually grow into a SDE if he got bigger.

We need help on the weakside, stick him there and he might be your backup #2 behind Charlton who has to play out of position for a year because Wormley and Gary are not giving up meaningful snaps at SDE. Mone and Glasgow are back in the middle so neither of those guys are likely to slide into the middle, IMO.

WDE

  1. Charlton
  2. Kemp/Marshall

NG

  1. Glasgow
  2. Mone

DT

  1. Hurst
  2. Godin

SDE

  1. Wormley
  2. Gary
