Carl Hagelin Faces Disciplinary Hearing

NEW YORK -- Rangers rookie Carl Hagelin has a hearing scheduled Sunday for his hit on Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson during Ottawa's 3-2 overtime win against New York on Saturday.

Hagelin earned a five-minute elbowing major for the play at 10:32 of the second period. Alfredsson left the game and did not return.

A little surprised as this type of aggression was never seen at U-M or to date for the Rangers but this sort of thing is far from unordinary in the NHL playoffs.

Comparing Weber's play and Hagelin's is like comparing apples and oranges. All season the league has been trying to get rid of plays exactly like Carl's (high elbows along the boards). Weber, although dirty as shit, isnt really what the league is trying to get rid of. If Carl isn't suspended i will be very surprised.

What the league has been trying to limit is injuries/blows to the head. Both acts fall under that, except Weber's was malicious with intent, whereas I'm guessing Hagelin's was a gametime incident (I didn't see it)

Sorry, but Red Wing fans are going to continue to be convinced the league hastes us until they give us a reason to believe otherwise. That slap on the wrist for Weber's actions is a joke. They were even joking about it in practice the next day. Nashville finds it FUNNY that Weber got away with clear intent to cause a head injury.

I didn't say he shouldn't be suspended but The NHL isn't a league that goes hard with disipline, which is why the longest suspension in NHL history was only 30 games.

He had no history of dirty hits or plays. Perhaps he gets sapped with a game or two if Alfie is out of the next game. The Carkner mugging was awesome to watch but he should be tossed from the playoffs. Obviously premeditated on his part.

Not that it's a great idea when talking about supplemental discipline, but I love the fact that hockey allows a more severe penalty for illegal plays that cause injuries. How ridiculous is it that Tom Gholston could have ended Denard's career at the cost of fifteen yards? Compare that to hockey where he could (and probably should have) been assessed a match penalty that banned him from team contact before a hearing with a maximum punishment of lifetime banishment, not to mention a five minute major.

In my opinion, hockey is just that much better for better tacking on additional penalties for dirty play causing injuries.

He didn't participate in the NYR practice today. His spot on the 1st line was taken by Fedotenko, with Krieder replacing RF on his line.

Zetterberg was ok after the Weber hit.  Alfredsson was not.  Shanahan was quoted today as saying that they look at the harm done in assessing the fine/suspensions.  Sucks b/c the intent to harm seems to have been more with Weber than with Hagelin.

OT question for your hockey folk - do you have any suggestions for Web sites to check hockey scores on Blackberries?  I routinely use ESPN b/c it is fast and current, but I cannot stomach that ESPN puts crappy regular season NBA games on its front page over NHL playoff games.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  Tnx.

He got three games for it. Three. Meanwhile, Weber gets a joke of a fine, and I highly doubt Neal's gonna get anything for attempting to concuss two Flyers today. The NHL has no hope for discipline.

The only reason I can think of for issuing a 3 game suspension is that Alfredsson is still sleeping. If he plays in the next few games it's a complete joke. Shanahan's decision making certainly has become a punch line. Will be interesting to see how he handles the Pitt-Philly mess.

The standard for years has been one game in the playoffs equals two in the regular season. That means that this suspension was worse than Keith's for knocking out Daniel Sedin (who still isn't back). I honestly don't get this one. Basically, I've lost faith in the NHL to ever get it right.

I can see a Hagelin suspension for one game, but this is pretty ridiculous.  Weber certainly should have been suspended for at least one game.  I cannot comprehend why the resulting injury has anything to do with the decision to suspend.  The only thing that should matter is intent, period.  It makes no sense.  The majority of injuries are not a result of dirty plays.

It's like going to work for the NHL melts your brain or something.  The utter lack of consistency in his penalties make absolutely no sense at all.   How you can watch a guy intentionally grab someone and WWE him into the glass BREAKING HIS HELMET and not even suspend him is ridiculous.
