Caris LeVert has surgery to repair stress fracture in foot, will miss 8-10 weeks

Submitted by Raoul on

Reported by Baumgardner, among others. This is obviously a setback with regard to LeVert's summer workout plans, but he should be recovered in time for the trip to Italy:

“Caris underwent surgery today for a stress fracture of his foot at the University of Michigan hospital," Beilein said in a statement. "He is doing well and we expect him to make a full recovery in about 8 to 10 weeks. We are confident he will participate in our late summer training and play in our August trip to Europe.”

According to a Freep article, it's not known whether he'll be able participate in the Kevin Durant camp for wings (to which he had received an invite), which is usually held in July.

My son broke his forearm snowboarding. Pretty good fracture with full separation according to the x-ray. They said he had to go into surgery and I (slightly) freaked. There were no knives involved as the 'surgery' involved putting the arm in traction to separate the bone a little so the doctor could put it back in place. A temporary cast was put in place and we flew back home. The next doctor took another x-ray and declared my son had to go into surgery! This was more tugging on the arm to realign the fracture before the final cast was put in place. Final x-ray showed no sign of bone trauma - amazing* how the body heals! So, we may have something similar with Caris. A stress fracture isn't a full separation, so the surgery may be just a set & cast. The bone fracture will then heal stronger than the surrounding bone. * or "amaizing" as it's spelled in Ann Arbor

Well he'll still be able to do plenty of weight training when it comes to upper body stuff for these 8-10 weeks. Except that may result in him looking like one of those guys you see at the gym with an enormous chest, arms that are disproportionately big, but legs that look no bigger than twigs.

Well, if something like this was going to happen to anyone on the basketball team, this is perhaps good timing if you want to call it that, but it still sucks for LeVert and the team all the same. Best wishes to Caris on a speedy and full recovery and hopefully he is good to go for the European tour in August as predicted.

Have we ever had a stretch where so many top players in the 2 sports have something hit them?  Mitch, Caris, JMFR - best LB, Blake - best CB, Darboh (I know he hasnt done anything but by all accounts had won a starting WR job), Butt - best TE, Magnuson - best OL? etc.  I get injuries happen but it seems like ours happen much more prominently to our very top players.

Did someone not make the correct sacrifice to a volcano at some point 4 years ago?

This is going to hurt his weight training...also, this is an important development period for basketball players. Getting work in over the summer is HUGE for improvement and development.

Obviously LeVert was pretty damn good, but he would've been able to attend summer camps with other potential all-american players and learn things the way Burke, THJ, GRIII and Stauskas did the summer before they left us.

Also good to build chemistry with the new team and establish a new role.

Not the end of the world, but this hurts.

some just think it isn't the end of the world and that people can actually train while having a fractured foot. Put me down in that camp as well. Everything doesn't have to be a catastrophe. If you need something to be grateful for be happy this didn't happen at the beginning of the B1G season. He'll be fine and ready to play by the time the season starts.

Also, 8-10 weeks puts him back at either the second or fourth week of July. This isn't the end of the world guys, calm down.

This will give other guys a chance to get in on some intense practices with the starting unit while the main cog is on the mend. It could provide different combinations of players out of necessity. I'm truly curious who would fill in for Caris (albeit insufficiently) if this injury were to linger around.

Which is why MAAR was necessary.  There is literally no other 2 on the roster right now unless you throw Irvin down from 3 to 2.   I you want to keep Irvin mostly at the 3, MAAR would be getting 25 minutes a game (maybe some Dawkins too) at 2.

Just like the 5... those are two positions we cannot suffer any serious injury next year since dropoff is dramatic.

Fun... or not so fun fact. I saw Caris today being wheeled into the Campus Inn in a wheelchair with a cast on his foot. I was 100% sure it was him, so I immediately went on here to see if anything had been posted yet about it and it hadn’t. I wanted to post yet so I thought about posting or tweeting out something about it but knew better than to post speculative bullshit until the news broke. Sure enough though...
