Captains: How many? Who do you want?

Coach Hoke announced at his presser today that the voting for team captains would take place this Sunday.

On that, a couple things...

- Anyone know how many we'll have?

- Who do you want to see as captains?

I'm guessing there'll probably be 4.  That sounds about right for football, I think.  I'd like to see:

- Martin and Molk - both senior leaders and anchors of the DL and OL.  Both show up to play with intensity.

- Denard - The obvious leader of the offense...  By all accounts really worked hard in the off-season getting everyone together for 7-on-7's.

- Kovacs - The guy's work ethic, determination, and persistence, to go from being a walk-on to a multi-year starter is exemplary.

If there's a fifth, I'd want it to be Woolfolk, for battling back from that injury and putting in the work to bounce back strong.

Upvoting yourself is lame.

But I agree on Martin, Molk, and Denard. I'm not really sure who the leaders are on the defense, but I would think Woolfolk would be a good candidate. Or maybe Demens?

But he thinks his biggest competition is RVB. I think it comes down to those two guys and one may the get the nod over the other if there's only one from the defense.

A lot of people would also suggest a captain for the "3rd side" of the ball, the special teams. It is a good way to get effort on STs, by acknowledging their significance to the game as a whole. At least, a lot of the NFL programs use the three captain system. Not sure who we'd use as our captain from the STs, just pointing it out . . . . .

Two  prime examples:

1)  Q Who?:  Guinan advised Picard and the ship how best to deal with the Borg.  Upon seeing the first Cube on her monitor, Guinan warned Picard to be careful, or the Borg would destroy them.  Guinan's race had already been all but exterminated by the Borg and she had first-hand experience with them.

Whoopi also helped advise the Captain, and Riker, in The Best of Both Worlds, parts I and II, when the Borg were attacking Earth directly.

2)  Yesterday's Enterprise:  Only Guinan was aware of the space-time continuum shift and advised Picard to send the Enterprise-C back through the temporal rift, restoring the normal flow of events.  In the alternate timeline, humanity was losing a 20-year-long war with the Klingon Empire and one more ship would not have made a difference in the balance.

In conclusion, Guinan would be an excellent special teams captain.

If there are four, I would have to say Molk, Martin, Koger, and Woolwolk. I think you could make a good argument for Denard, Van Bergen, and Kovacs as well.

I would like to see six. Three from each side of the ball. Preferably senior leaders and maybe that guy who wears 16.

All in for some manball.

How about John McColgan? I know he isn't the most talented or most talked-about player, but he seems like a stand-up kid and seems to be well-respected.

I think Denard is an obvious choice, both from his on-field performance, but also because he has garnered the respect of his teammates. I think almost every single person (players and coaches) that has been asked about Denard in an interview has spoken to his leadership, hard work, and dedication to the team. On-field performace aside, that right there is enough to be captain IMO.

Mark Martin also seems like a pretty obvious choice. Again, on-field performance aside, he's a guy a lot of people talk about as a vocal leader and a hard worker. It seems that he has earned the respect of his teammates and I would be surprised if he is not voted as a captain.

I think Worlfalk could be another choice. Kovacs is also someone you hear mentioned a lot as a hard worker and he seems to be emerging as a leader.

My main point in all of this is that the captain isn't necessarily going to be someone who is the best player, which makes it hard for us to really guess. Unless we hear stuff from interviews, we don't really see who takes the initiative in the locker room and on the field, and it's those things that the players recognize and respect.
