Capital One Bowl Rematch vs Alabama
Is it just me, or would a UGA win over Bama sending Bama into a possible rematch v UM be a fantastic opportunity? Am I the only one who think a rematch v Bama would be a no-lose chance at redemtion and national respect for the conference in general? We are a much better team now than we were in back in Dallas, and a disappointed Bama team could be had. Or maybe it's just me.

What have you seen over the course of the year that would lead you to believe we can beat Alabama or even keep it close?
November 27th, 2012 at 10:38 AM ^
I (jokingly) started down the path of Alabama lost to Texas A&M, which lost to __, which lost to __, ... .
Even that doesn't work. It looks like there's a closed loop of losses with Alabama, Texas A&M, Florida, Georgia, LSU, and South Carolina. Those teams only lost to one another. That's kind of wild.

worse than getting blown out by Alabama, is getting blown out by Bama TWICE.

It is just you. No one else wants to see that again.

Nope..Ill take A&M

Do you know how many bridges I burnt tailgating in Dallas before the game with Alabama fans??! If they saw me again in Florida, I'd be beatin' to a pulp with their Rebel Flag belt buckles and dentures.

I'd rather Alabama than A&M, but that's about it. Alabama in the Capitol One Bowl might be suffering from a bit of the same "I wish we were playing for the MNC" hangover that caused them to lose against Utah a couple years ago. That to me makes them less scary than A&M. But that's about the only SEC team they're less scary than.

Rematches only work if the first game was close. There would be no interest in this game outside of Alabama and Michigan. ESPN/ABC would kibosh this matchup because it would be a dog in ratings.

No.....just plain no.
November 27th, 2012 at 10:59 AM ^
Well based on the voting, you aren't the only one, but you're one of only two. So I don't think people agree with you.
November 27th, 2012 at 11:00 AM ^
there is no way this is a good idea. I want to play someone we haven't played so I'd like to see Georgia, South Carolina, or Texas A&M. Anyone but Bama. I want to see Bama curb stomp ND in the title game.

PLEASE GOD NO........NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Michigan/Alabama rematch not likely; Michigan LSU matchup a possibility

but by the time the game rolled around I know I would be sick to death of all of the talk comparing Hoke to Miles and how we wanted Miles to be our coach, yada yada yada.
But from a football standpoint, that would be an interesting game. I think we're in for a tough bowl game regardless of which SEC team we face, I just hope it is a close and thrilling game, and it gives Denard and the rest of the seniors a chance to go out on top.

I'd rather neuter some DAWGS, or them Louisiana cats. I will however run away from a Crimson Tide this go round.

Trying to add this all up.
We go to Capital One if:
-- Nebraska wins B1G, and
-- Alabama wins SEC.
We don't go to Capital One if:
-- Wiscosin wins (meaning, Nebraska is a shoe-in for Cap One bowl -- not even a deaf, dumb, blind, dead monkey would pick NU(NTNU) over NU(YTNU)), or
-- Georgia wins and Cap1 bowl picks Alabama over other available options [UF if not in BCS, LSU, TAMU, USC(NTUSC)].
Seems to me, the only way the Cap One bowl picks Alabama (if Geogia wins) is if Nebraska loses B1G game, and if the bowl thinks Nebraska/Alabama (a pretty cool matchup) would get more butts in seats and eyeballs on the TV than Michigan-[Someone]. I have to admit, Nebraska/Alabama would be pretty good draw versus Michigan-LSU. I don't think TAMU moves the eyeball needle enough.

I agree that the only way that Alabama's going to the Cap 1 is with a Nebraska loss.
We could technically get passed over if the Cap 1 wanted to accomodate Alabama and avoid a rematch, but, because of the mass ineligibility/mediocrity in the Woody division, I think the only team that could jump us in the selection order is Northwestern, and there's no practical way that happens.
November 27th, 2012 at 2:43 PM ^
...the MGoBlog NU rule: whoever wins the game between Northwestern and Nebraska gets custody of 'NU' until the next year's game.
So: ". . . --not even a deaf, dumb, blind, dead monkey would pick NW over NU, or . . .."

This is MICHIGAN .... (you know the rest).

I opened this thread completely opposed to the idea of a rematch. However, you managed to convince me it could be a good thing. On the other hand a 25 point loss in our bowl game and ending the season 8-5 would leave an awful taste in my mouth for the entire off season.

actually wants to sell some tickets and generate some interest around the game. I don't see the Wolverine or Bama flocking to Orlando for another 'Bama smack down. I would also think Dave Brandon would not be interested in seeing that, too.
After all, it's all about the money.

from mlive...thread 455481. I know we think lowly of mlive but this poster does in-fact work for the Capitol One Bowl committee:

The 2-win rule -- which would make Nebraska knock UM out of contention -- can be WAIVED "if all sides agree to it." "All sides" means the school, the conference, and the bowl (doesn't say if the OTHER conference has to agree too -- probably not).
If you're Nebraska, do you go to the Cap One two years in a row? Normally no, however (1) it's at least in Florida, and (2) if the opponent is Alabama, maybe you do. NU-Alabama is a great matchup, that might excite Huskernation even if its a repeat. (Whereas, a game vs TAMU and Johnny Football, maybe not so much.)
If you're the B1G and Nebraska is OK with waiving the 2-win rule -- what about the other NU? Northwestern will be real upset that they got passed over. Does the B1G want to set that precedent?

If I had a choice I would prefer we play LSU. Of the choice of Bama, A&M, Georgia, LSU, and Florida I believe we match up best against them. LSU has had periods of offensive oblivion. Their defense is very good. But I would scared to death that some of the more balanced teams would kill us 49-7. LSU might be 20-3, but if some weird things happened I could see us pulling the game out. We would need some crazy DR scores plus win the TO battle. I could easily see LSU panicing and getting out of rhythme. Bama on the other hand could turn the ball over 4 straight times and score the next 8. No way I want to face that Oline again.

Everyone of their strengths is a weakness of ours. Their one apparent weakness, pass defense/pass rush, we are not in position to truly exploit. Perhaps a bit better now with Gardner under center, but we don't run many slants or crossing routes with him yet...probably an experience/reading the defense issue. Don't see us beating Bama with a bunch of vertical passing attempts and no run game.
Sorry, they will own the trenches and poop on us.

Showing up more prepared and losing to Alabama 28-17 is not my idea of redemption.
November 27th, 2012 at 9:14 PM ^
...I can think of at least one way that this "no-lose chance" could be a lose chance.

Whatever you do, do not replay this game.

I can't believe how pussified you guys are. Your defense has improved over the course of the year and unleashing Denard would give Saban fits. Throw in Gardner at QB and I think you would have a much different game.
