Can Denard Match Juice?

Submitted by WolvinLA2 on

Do you guys remember in 2008 when Juice Williams set a record for most total yards in Big House history at 431 passing/rushing yards?  I thought I had drank it clear out of my brain, but alas, it's still there.

This got me thinking - this is a record that Denard should absolutely break (and the sooner the better).  My question to you all is, when will this happen (team, year?) and what will the break down look like, approximately (run/pass).  If you asked me at the end of last year, I would have said no unless he runs for 400 yards in a game, but now that he can throw to our guys, this is very doable.

Your thoughts, thanks.

I guess it really depends on him not only beating out Tate, but completely beating out Tate.

I don't think Denard could get the 400 yards against Massachusetts or Bowling Green, as the 2nd and 3rd string Quarterbacks are liable to get significant playing time (fingers crossed).

Maybe against Illinois would be his best chance, its a bit later in the year so he would have a chance to be the clear cut #1 guy (if its going to happen) and they don't have the solid defenses of the other teams.  Also it would be fitting to do it against Juice's old team.

It wouldn't surprise me if it doesn't happen this year...especially with Tate competing for time and likely to get a lot of snaps.

I agree that it won't be against UMass or BGSU because he'd get pulled.  I think it would be against a team like Illinois, or possibly Purdue the following year, a team with a bad defense, but that can score points as well, keeping the pressure on us to keep moving the ball.  ND is another team I could see this happening against.

Maybe he doesn't get pulled (even though Tate needed live snaps last year too, and both Sheridan and Cone had drives against DSU), but even if that's the case, I'd assume that we'd start handing the ball to a running back every play in the 4th quarter of those games if we're winning, and if Denard is really on pace to hit 450, we should be winning by a lot.   I don't see either of those teams keeping the pressure on us to score.

He could do it against UMass or Bowling Green, but the score will be out of hand and they will probably let Jack Kennedy come in to mop up (oh how I miss the coner).  Maybe next year or the year after it could be done.

Not to be Buzz Killington or Debbie Downer, but I still have a nervous tick from watching us lose our last seven games against FBS competition (both good and bad).

Point is, let's not get ahead of ourselves.  Let's be happy to beat the teams we should beat and not assume that we're going to steamroll anybody.  If 8-16 has taught me anything, it's not to assume that we should be anybody.

With that, please carry on with the regularly scheduled optimism.

Well I had successfully drank it out of my brain, but now it's back in there. Thanks.

No offense to anyone (you especially, Juice), but when I think of Denard Robinson's potential/list of appropriate goals, I try to aim a little higher than Juice Williams.

The question should be "Can Juice match Denard?"

Denard actually ran so fast that he ended up in the back of the endzone in 2007 with 658 total yards in one game. So, in answer to your question, no I do not think Juice can match Denard's 658. I dont see Juice passing 431 anytime soon.

... better, but it's going to take alot of work. Juice ran the zone read better than anyone else in college football. Just that little pause he had after he pulled the ball back from the tailback, was enough to confuse to defense. Can you imagine if denard learned how to do it like that?

Edit: Id like to see him be more like tyrod taylor than juice.
