Cam Newton, Auburn, Rankings, & MNC

Submitted by StephenRKass on

So it has been interesting reading about Cam Newton's potential cheating problems and character issues. We'll see how this plays out.

My question is whether or not this will have an impact on the MNC. More specifically, I could easily see that this might take a long time to come to a resolution. Into 2011, at least. Knowing this, would the guys behind the curtain who pull the strings allow Auburn into the MNC? Options would be to let Auburn play, then deal with it after the truth comes out. Or, to blackball Auburn, so as not to have to deal with this possibility. Not a pleasant place to be.

I really don't see much coming of this incident.  I mean... Jeremiah Masoli left Oregon and he had off-the-field issues he's in grad school at Ole Miss, right?

I really don't know... what is protocol for cheating then transfering?  What exactly makes Newton ineligible?  I don't follow... (not that i'm right... I just don't follow.)

The question is NOT whether they will be able to play for the MNC - but whether Newton would be their QB.

Could a major investigation be wrapped up in a couple of months?  Highly doubtful - I mean, look at our own investigation, and USC's - which took something like 40 years to unfold.

Personally, I'm avoiding total judgment on Newton until all the facts are laid out.  What I do know is that Auburn was robbed in 2003, so I wouldn't be opposed to them being in the MNC even if their QB had some money coming in.

I think they are in a hard spot. If they allow Auburn in, blocking out TCU and BSU out, and Auburn has to forfeit the game, then you get more controversy with the autobids. If you block Auburn out, TCU gets smoked by Oregon, and nothing comes of the accusations, then you have Auburn complaining about it, and rightfully so.

If I were a voter, I'd be watching for Auburn to slip up the littlest bit and then vote for TCU after that.

...but if someone had a covert agenda to keep Auburn and Newton from winning it all, what is happening right now would be exactly the way to go about it.  I prefer to wait until more facts come out.

I'm not going to bury Newton yet because most of the claims against him lack much in the way of traditional evidence, but if the cheating issues at Florida are true, along with the stolen laptop, that definitely looks down on him as a player and individual honors, especially in light of the Bush fiasco.  That said, I don't think the voters will put much credence in its effect on Auburn the team unless there are rumblings that Newton's involvement with an agent or some other equally-serious claims raise the specter of him being deemed ineligible as a player.  Then, I do expect some voters to dock Auburn because nobody wants to potentially vacate the MNC winner because of an ineligible player.  So yeah, right now this all seems like smoke, but as more information comes out there may be some real fire involved.
