Cam Gordon

Word on my block is that a strong performer and standout during spring practice is none other than Ink Town's own Cam Gordon. Rave Reviews at the safety position from people in the know. Flies around the field, is athletic as hell, and hits like a ton of bricks.

"Future All American" was the term used to describe my man, who is now nicknamed "Killa Cam" (I made that up)

Take it for what it's worth, but I love the opportunity to spread positive news.

That's the wild card everyone is forgetting about this year...players like Cam who are about to come out of the woodwork and make a huge impact this year.

People love to point out who we lost, and that our incoming freshman won't be ready for primetime....but they fail to recognize the super second year sophs or rs freshmen.

Gonna kill it this year. Mark my word.

Well, last year at this time, everyone thought Will Campbell would be a beast, Ezeh and Mouton would be a killer ILB combo, that Turner would come in and play immediately, and that Emilien would be a significant factor for our defense.

There's hype about everyone at various points, but then by the end of the season, we all see what was true and what wasn't.

Moving from one side of the ball to the other generally doesn't turn out great. Ferrara is currently languishing on the bench. James Rogers can't find a spot on either side. Morgan Trent turned out okay on the field, but he was shaky early on. Helmuth moved to DL and couldn't stick. Watson moved from TE to DE and only played against Baby Seal University.

So I'm not saying it can't be done. But yeah, situations like this call for skepticism, in my opinion.

I mean no offense to Gordon, but I think the reason most people thought he had more potential on defense was that he was too slow to play receiver. That's not exactly a ringing endorsement for a free safety, although safeties don't necessarily have to be speed demons (see Brandent Englemon). He's also a solid tackler, but people - including me - thought he would be some kind of linebacker. So...yeah.

Or for a differing philosophy see Patterson, Gary and the Horned Frogs of TCU. D made up of HS RBs and QBs, even the DL. Yes, yes, yes, I know they play in that weak MWC (*sarcasm*) but they were one of 4 teams to be at least 12-0 with some convincing wins. Their D is fast and was pretty good. They actually did well vs. a good BSU O.

Ian Gold. I am pretty sure he was recruited as a running back out of high school. After his success at LB it seemed that Michigan recruited a lot of offensive talent with the possibility of moving to the defense. I see that a lot with RR also, getting speed on offense that will transfer to defense.

After watching Woodson play RB in high school, I was borderline distraught to hear that he'd be on the defensive side of the ball in college. While he didn't start at RB in college and then switch to D, his athleticism played a big role in his success on the defensive side of the ball. Here's hoping Killa Cam finds similar success.

If true, this is good news. However, last year there were people saying he would be an All-American at WR. With Gordon, I am going to reserve judgement until watching him on the field.

always a wise policy.

Spring practice reports seem to be almost universally positive for most players. In fact, I get kind of nervous when the reports for a particular player ARE NOT glowing in spring practice (see: Turner, JT) as that often means that they are exhibiting high-levels of suck.

Of course, it cuts both ways. You can't write off the spring "losers" until you see them on the field as well.

30 seconds of watching practice video to notice that Cam Gordon is going to be legit. He's tall, rangy, and built like a linebacker..plus he is definitely fast enough to play wideout, I think he is just needed at safety way more. Cam Gordon has great instincts and sees the field well which match his athleticism well. I wouldn't be shocked if he earns a starting role.

...from a recent article:

He came to Michigan with designs on being a big-play receiver and maybe catching touchdown passes from Devin Gardner, his former quarterback at Inkster. Now, Gordon said he can't wait to intercept Gardner.

“All of them will get it,” Gordon said. “Tate (Forcier), Gardner, Denard (Robinson), all of them. I’m picking all of them off. They already know. Seven-on-seven, I’m like, ‘Don’t throw it to me.’ I say no over the top balls. Never. They know that.”

This tells me he will be a ball hawk. If it's in the air, he'll be looking to play on the ball whenever possible. That's cool.

concern is that cam looks so good in practice that it won't carry over to games, a la brandon smith... IIRC smith was all the talk in his first fall practice until he got sick and then all the talk again last year during the spring and fall practices... but when it came to games he couldn't get on the field(other than special teams) and when he did he proved to be to slow and didn't have a postion... i'm not saying that the fate is going to happen to cam, but i would like to see him in live action first before i come to any conclusions...

So please pump your sources about what's up with Turner. Is he a stud in the making, or is the jury out, or is he a disappointment? Is he out of shape and dogging it? Is he slower than advertised? Is it learning the schemes? If so, how come he hasn't started that already . . . shouldn't he have learned a lot in the Fall? It is very hard for me to believe that a great player in the secondary can't adjust to different schemes from the coaches.
