Calvin Anderson- Grad OT target- latest statements

Since this is a position of great need, and as the recruiting services aren't showing Crystal Balls for grad transfers like Calvin Anderson, I put together a few recent quotes from him. I'm not going to post the earlier info Brian did a great job of running through on MgoBlog, nor am I trying to cherry pick. So far Anderson has taken visits to Texas, Auburn and Michigan. Hopefully this gives people an idea of (at least what he is communicating as) his thought process. Caveat: recruits generally talk up every school they visit, so you may have to read between the lines some.

On his decision to transfer in general, Anderson stated that after his redshirt junior season in Houston, he talked his possible NFL future over with his father. The two agreed he had legitimate NFL dreams that could best reach their potential at a Power 5 institution.

I am trying to go to the best place for seven months to get prepared the best.

On his thoughts about Auburn:

“I think they helped themselves greatly. I already thought pretty highly of Auburn and I didn’t know much about it, and now that I know a lot more than I did, I think they went from being great to more great,” Anderson said. “For placements and all that, I got to think through it, but I think they certainly — it’s certainly pluses. So, how many pluses, I’ll figure out, but certainly pluses.”...
“A lot of it speaks for itself. Obviously SEC football is the biggest football you can play at the collegiate level.”

On his thoughts about Texas:

“Proximity to home is not really much of a factor, because I am trying to go to the best place for seven months to get prepared the best. So it’s great to be at home. All that’s great. But that’s not really weighing into this decision, because it’s a business decision,” Anderson said. “So I’m taking into account what can help me be better, and I don’t think proximity to home has anything to do with that.”

On his thoughts about Michigan:

“The thing that sets Michigan apart, other than how much I like [Michigan director of recruiting Matt] Dudek and coach [Tim] Drevno, is the opportunity to play against Ohio State and Nick Bosa,” Anderson said. “That’s a huge deal to me because it’s a high-profile game and gives any high-level tackle a chance to boost their stock. Also, the importance of the alumni bases is a big benefit. “He’s the best defensive end in the country, so I would love the opportunity to display my talents against him. I love the chance to play against big-time defensive ends.”

As  much as I would willingly argue with Anderson on that last point, he also explained that going up against Rashan Gary in practice on a daily basis is another benefit to choosing Michigan. (I've also included the paywalled site interview regarding Michigan for those who have 247, but have only posted public info).

Any and all other wildcard information out there:

Anderson's father was just promoted to "full bird" Colonel in the army. That's a big mark that few career officers attain. Michigan and Texas both sent him congratulatory letters. Not so much the other schools. That appears to not have been lost on Anderson, either.

Today my dad had the honor of being promoted to the rank of full bird Colonel in the army! I’m incredibly proud of his dedication to not only our family, but to our country. Thank you @UMichFootball and @TexasFootball for the tributes to him as well! #HookEm #Michigan pic.twitter.com/DcJ3Zfyxik

— Calvin Anderson (@THE_CONDA25) February 3, 2018

He stated he plans on making a decision by March 25th.

Come to Michigan so you can

Come to Michigan so you can play against really good Ohio state players?

That seems like a horrible sales pitch, if he was told that.

My concern is that he was fed that idea as a reason to come to Michigan.

Yes, and *gasp* even more

Yes, and *gasp* even more than one of those might have been his own actual opinion.

Just b/c he said something, doesn't mean that was the focus of our pitch.

The alumni base, etc., is more likely a part of it. And even if Bosa had anything to do with it, we're likely the school that's best pitching him his future not only in the NFL but also beyond:

1. Destroy (not just play against) Nick Bosa and other big Hosses in several very high profile games this year

2. Get drafted higher (due also to coach Harbaugh's league connections) and then play a while in the League

3. Leverage a by-then completed Michigan grad education and alumni network into decades more of personal and professional success

4. ???

5. Profit! (ok... more like "Profit" at every freaking step along the way)

That sounds like the plan to me!

nah

I doubt that is the case. If anything like that it was "you can play against Rashan every day and also compete against some of the best DE's here in the Big Ten"

It's almost as if a player

It's almost as if a player who is transferring in order to better his level of competition was told he can prove himself against some really great talent at Michigan.
A sales pitch designed to meet his stated criteria, weird.

In

his circumstance it would really not be that bad of a sell.  He has one season to make himself a high NFL pick.  Playing in probably the most watch regular season football game against the premiere DE in the country would get him a lot of eyeballs if he played well.  Agreed, it isn't a good pitch to recruits but for a grad transfer doing what he is trying to do, I don't see anything wrong with it.

To be fair though, Auburn

To be fair though, Auburn plays Washington, LSU, Georgia, and Bama next year. While their DEs aren't quite to the level as Gary, Bosa and I'd throw in Winovich there too, they're no slouch either.

Yeah on that

I'm fairly certain that's his own personal view, though I get the wanting to showcase his abilities sentiment. I won't argue with him that Michigan is going to have the toughest schedule next year. Personally I see the ability to play against Gary on a daily basis (and hopefully get great coaching) as better preparation.

At least he mentions Gary. I haven't found that he mentions any other player from any other team as a benefit to playing against, so there's that.

"Ohio State is helping archrival Michigan in recruiting..."

Bruce Feldman touches on it as well during his recent Si article on Calvin Anderson:

Ohio State is helping archrival Michigan in recruiting one of the nation’s hottest commodities.

Another big deal for Anderson is how formidable some of the Wolverines’ 2018 opponents are, especially the end-of-season matchup with Ohio State’s vaunted defensive front.

“In the Big Ten, they have bigger defensive linemen, and for me to be able to display that run-blocking ability is gonna be a big benefit of going to Michigan. In the Big 12, you’d have really good edge rushers that I’d play against. I’m comparing styles of offenses.”

Anderson does mention that Texas and Michigan are currently tied for his leaders with Auburn, Oklahoma and TCU behind in that order.

I don't know if it was a

I don't know if it was a sales pitch in this case but I remember watching the 1999 NCAA MBB championship between UCONN and Duke and during interviews with the players I remember one of the reasons players picked to play at UCONN was 'so, you weren't deemed good enough to play at Duke or Georgetown etc, come to UCONN and play against them.'

sounds more intune with an MSU pitch but whatever gets it done is fine with me.

Generally, no, but versus Texas, yes

They do play USC and TCU next year, but few competent defenses aside from those. Auburn's another story of course. But they do seem to be running in 3rd place at the moment.

And furthermore, the idea of practicing against Michigan's D-line (Winovich and Gary, plus all the blitzing), should be part of the sales pitch for sure.

March 25th is his birthday, so he said by then he will decide. However, Michigan starts spring practice on March 22nd, so if he wants to get in on that...

Really? Seems to me he pretty much nullified the only advantage Texas has by stating unequivocally that location doesn't matter. Maybe he is not entirely truthful but if you take him at his word, this one seems to me that Michigan is the front runner

Less about distance and more

Less about distance and more that he’s an Austin kid who likely grew up rooting for Texas and Herb Hand has a better pedigree than Drevno.

Herb Hand?

What has that guy done? Those tire fire olines at PSU? Drev has coached great olines at Stanford, USC and the 49ers. His Michigan tenure has been underwhelming for sure but I do believe for a guy looking to get to the NFL a former NFL coach and a more pro-style offense is an advantage.

We are due for good news.

We are due for good news. Come to Michigan and make a legend for yourself as you anchor our turn around. We were so close to being 11 and 1 last year and poor QB and Oline play was the cause.

I disagree

Had we won four of the five games we lost we CLEARLY would've been 12-1.  Any idiot can see just how close we were.  Only four losses away - practically there if you ask me.

I'm telling you - the selection committee had a much harder time deciding to keep us out of the final four last year than people think.  I've heard rumors that there were quite a few lobbying for Michigan to be included.  "Best 8-5 team in the land" they said.  "Hell, had they won four of the five games they lost they'd be 12-1" some claimed.  "Only thing holding them back was horrific QB play, an O line that cant pass block and completely unimaginative and uninspired play calling.  Other than that they were world-beaters."

We were SO close........

championship game performance was a crucial factor as well.  Being 3 games out of participating in it was hard for them to overlook.

Perhaps I am being a slappy.

Perhaps I am being a slappy. However, in spite of our poor play on offense we went down to the wire against MSU and OSU. Maybe I am being too optimistic, but I don't think we were that far from 10 and 2 or even upsetting Wisoconsin had we improved slightly on offense.

We return a lot and a slightly improved offense could spell good things for this team even with the road games.

Does his mom need a job? I hear we are looking for a new team mom.

But really, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter anyway. We have the worst offensive coaching staff in the history of football so they'll probably ruin him anyway.

Legend

If Shea is eligible, or if Peters or McCaffery step up, he could be a part of a very special turn around.  Michigan sucked last year, largely because of the QB situation, but probably more so because of our lack of tackles.   If he can play, his press will be crazy good next year.  He will not find a bigger spotlight.

If you sift through some of

If you sift through some of UMBIG’s comments, I believe he stated that Anderson is all Texas and that UM has a backup plan for another OT. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I’m fairly certain that’s what was said. Either way, I really hope Anderson goes blue.

Could be worth something, but

Could be worth something, but I have started to alter my stance on UMBig. He clearly has knowledge and I appreciate everything he does for this blog, but he isn't perfect with what he has said. I believe he said something along the lines of more offensive staff changes coming, which clearly isn't coming to fruition. I am not saying that any of this is his fault, but like with recruiting, things change. Maybe at the time of UMBig's comments, it was likely that CA was heading to Austin, but as we all know, things change. I will further go on taking UMBig's information as more informed than most, but not as gospel as many others tend to do.

You get what you pay for

I'm not one to look down on free info from a likely insider. I also understand that its a fluid environment and things do change.

It's like asking for a company or division's financial balance sheet (more of a snapshot in time) and then coming back in a year later with a statement of cash flow and alleging that they mislead you.

That's my point. I apologize

That's my point. I apologize if my note came across as an indication that I don't appreciate what we get from the insider. It is more a criticism of what his word has become on this blog, through no fault of his own. People have realized that he is almost always right, and prefer to take his word as gospel, even though most of the situations he is speaking on is way too fluid to be taken as so.

Eh even our weak pass pro

Eh even our weak pass pro gave JOK the opportunities to win the MSU and OSU games, and were good enough to be in the Wisconsin game until Peters got hurt. Not saying the OL was great, but it was largely good enough to win 11 games. QB was 90% of our troubles last year.

Exactly - QB play was terrible

Not exactly an easy fix (since it SEEMS we have QBs who can be average B1G QBs) but a lot easier than fixing Oline.

So, the OL had nothing to do

So, the OL had nothing to do with clear shots on Speight and Peters?  JoK has the sense to run because he is a runner; Speight and Peters are prototypical pocket passers.  JoK's running can soften the blow of a weak OL.

The OL didn't really create much holes for our RBs either.

The emphasis on Bosa seems

The emphasis on Bosa seems odd, like he is really reaching for something to say to a Michigan audience. If he really knew a lot about the Michigan team, seems like he would have commented, as the OP noted, on how going up against the likes of Gary every day would help his development.

Reading between the lines here (linguistic analysis)

Auburn - "Helped themselves greatly" means they were already playing from behind. He later says something about playing the best competition to prepare himself*. Going against Bama will do that for you.

Texas - Proximity to home will NOT win this battle according to Anderson, other than that im not seeing anything in the quotes that stick out to set them apart.

Michigan - Seems high on his position coach and the guy who manages on campus visits. Nothing here that really separated us from what I can read other thant he fact of playing against Bosa.

*He states this in the Michigan segment.

EDIT - comments below from Sam Webb make it appear Auburn is the lead so my reading between the lines is really bad

After listening to Sam Webb's

After listening to Sam Webb's recruiting roundup yesterday, I just don't have a good feeling about our chances.

"very effusive praise for Auburn"

"SEC football is the biggest football you can play at this level"

"One of the biggest facrors, if not THE biggest, is development for the next level."

We've had one OL drafted (Glasgow) since Jim arrived, and our OL has not been cast in a very good light the last few years.

Maybe I'm affected by the many recent misses in OL recruiting, but I'm expecting Anderson to choose Auburn.

When I heard Sam's segment on Anderson yesterday morning, that was my immediate conclusion as well.

The current narrative that Michigan/Drevno is doing a poor job of developing OL talent—regardless of whether it's a sensible analysis or not—is a huge hill to climb.

That current narrative has

That current narrative has been wholly created by Michigan snowflakes. The fact Drevno and Harbaugh took Hokes horrible OLine and turned them into a servicable unit where most of them caught on with an NFL team, contradicts that uninformed, disingenuous, woe is me opinion.

Last years line had a center playing LT, a true sophomore at LG, another Hoke holdover that nevr saw the field until his 5th year and 2 true freshmen. Maybe give it a season or two before you dismiss them.

This fan base has become a detriment to team success. No need to negative recruit Michigan, our fans do it themselves. /vomit emojii

Having trouble lining this up.

Center playing LT = Cole

True sophomore at LG = Bredenson

Hoke holdover that never saw the field until his 5th year = Kugler

2 true freshmen = ?

Ruiz (true freshmen) and Onwenu (true sophomore) split time at RG

RT was RS Sophomores or RS Junior

The time lag may hurt here, but...

...Drevno and Harbaugh can point to the fact that at Stanford they turned David DeCastro and Jonathan Martin, both three-star guys, into first-team All Americans and high draft picks (first round for DeCastro/second round for Martin).  Chase Beeler went from three-star to All American under them too.

JFC...

Harbaugh/Drevno have literally been here for TWO NFL draft classes!! Jump to conclusions much??

They put a walk-on into the NFL (glasgow)

They inherited Magnuson, Kalis, and Braden and ZERO experienced depth behind them thanks to HOKE.

That horrific lack of depth forced Cole back out to LT because for C, other than Kugler, they had TRUE FRESHMEN.

Newsome was going to be a star and gets kneecapped by a fuckhead Badger CB.

Cole is only the 6th starting OL under them to graduate and he IS going to be drafted, too.

Stop being Chicken Little and wait for their OL recruits to bear fruit.

Look at Clemson and their patience with Dabo Swinney. Let's follow suit.

And yet, Swinney took 4-5

And yet, Swinney took 4-5 years before his teams started getting national attention, let alone getting to the playoffs.  I'm agreeing with Bucknekkid on this - the UM fanbase does a better job of negative recruiting itself than any rival does...

I really like his attitude. It seems like he is looking for all the right things that will get him to the next level including personal accountability. I'm a big fan of anyone who relishes going up against the best and seeing it as a challenge and opportunity.

I don't know

How to break it to him, but the only way he would be going against Rashan Gary on a daily basis would be as a back up, since the starters don't practice against the starting defense. I get what he's saying though.

I thought they all went

I thought they all went against each other in drills?  We're always seeing videos from spring and fall camps showing one-on-one drills, not just the scrimmage type full plays.

The pitch around getting to

The pitch around getting to play against OSU is essentially the same thing the SEC schools have been pitching for a decade, come prove your the best by playing the best in the best conference. Its essentially the same comment he made about auburn being in the sec, the difference is that for Michigan its osu that is high profile and everyone thinks the rest of the big ten is ass (in the case of defensive ends it is really michigan and osu then everyone else in the conference)

He got it wrong, Bosa is not

He got it wrong, Bosa is not the best DE in the country. He will get to go against the best DE's in the Country in practice everyday at Michigan.

Unbiased

However, if you were comparing them side-by-side. Bosa has more TFLs, sacks and QB hurries in about half the snaps as Gary. So you can kind of see where Anderson is coming from...

I believe that James Hudson

I believe that James Hudson and Chuck Filiaga will have something to say about the lineup, also.  But yeah, I like that battle.  A LOT!!

By reading those qoutes ...

Most would conclude Michigan. But the Texas quote was clearly cherry picked. If you are going to try not to cherry pick, you take the best quotes from each school. If the best thing he has to say about Texas is that proximity doesn’t matter, than we have nothing to worry about. However I doubt that is the best thing he had to say about Texas.

It seems to be that early in

It seems to be that early in the process his heart wanted Texas, and after some time and his visit his analytical brain said Michigan. As a mathematical econ major pursuing graduate studies in Finance, I am guessing his analytical side will win out. That's just what his recent quotes sound like to me - a kid that's trying to figure out the best way to let the locals down.

I see your point

I was actually going for his most recent statements on the schools in question, so that's what you got.

I can give you his earlier statements about Texas, though I couldn't find any from the past two weeks. This is from right after his Texas visit on January 22:

"I had some very high expectations. And those high expectations were exceeded."

And regarding his recruiter now at Texas from Feb 1 statements:

“I love Coach Herb. He’s awesome. I think he’s a great guy,”... “The next time I saw him he was in a Texas shirt. But I know this business is a business. When I found out about it on Twitter I asked the UT coaches immediately and they responded and we talked it out. They explained it was what happened and were pretty transparent about it.”

March 25th

At least we are past the Ides of March when he chooses Auburn after getting our hopes up. Wish the big guy all the best of luck wherever he goes that's not in Ohio.

I have a good feeling about Anderson coming to Michigan.. reading the tea leaves on this one, seems to be leaning UM.

Holy Cow, Ohio State is so

Holy Cow, Ohio State is so good at recruiting, they are even starting to recruit for us by osmosis.

Hey, whatever works.  I'm not too proud.

That pitch would actually make sense

Anderson has said many times that a big reason he's transferring is to play against elite competition.

Path to NFL

We will see a difference in recruiting as Michigan regains numbers in the NFL.  Harbaugh  is aboslutely repairing previous damage in these numbers.

It is interesting to peruse the number of drafts by years:  http://mgoblue.com/sports/2017/6/16/sports-m-footbl-archive-nfl-history-html.aspx

I'm just not as entusiastic

I'm just not as entusiastic about SEC Football as they are. To be such a big conference, only 4 teams tend to be any good with Bama being on a whole other level. Sure at Auburn, you get to play Bama in one of the biggest games in the sport but the Michigan Ohio State game eclipses that game.

I think unless you are playing out of your mind during the season, you have to believe that the Michigan connection to the NFL is stronger because relationships play a huge factor in who's attention you get. Michigan is looked at all season long whereas Auburn is looked at mainly when they play Bama.

Finally, Michigan is projected to do very well next season and when they out perform expectations everybody eligible will get a hard look for the next level. Without being biased, I really believe if he went to Michigan, and if he is good enough to beat out the guys already here, the teams success would thrust him into the spotlight among the nations OL talent. U of M could win a National Championship next year. I dont think Auburn or Texas wins 8 games.
