BYU loses second key player. PROVO, Utah (AP) — BYU tight end Colby Jorgensen is recovering from surgery after suffering a fracture and dislocation in his neck during practice Tuesday. The sophomore will miss the rest of the season. Coach Bronco Mendenhall says Jorgensen was in surgery for about five hours Tuesday evening. Jorgensen is a 6-foot-7, 228-pound sophomore from Provo, Utah. He redshirted in 2011 before serving a mission in Canada. Jorgenson returned as a member of the scout team in 2014. Mendenhall says, "It's really hard on me and hard on the staff and hard on the team and families. I don't think anyone understood, when it happened, the severity of it." http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2015/08/12/byu-tight-end-jor…

Looks like BYU practices are physical. A couple of altercations and the severe injury.

"Hard to watch: After a running play midway through practice, Cougar sophomore linebacker Colby Jorgensen didn't get up.

The former Timpview star was eventually carted off the field and taken to the hospital to be evaluated for a possible neck injury.

Jorgensen redshirted in 2011 because of a shoulder injury. He was originally brought in as a tight end but was moved to defense during the spring.

Who wants to play football: Cougar strength coach Frank Wintrich took center stage for much of Tuesday's practice.

After an altercation on the field between the offense and defense, Mendenhall sent the entire team to one end of the field to do a half hour of conditioning.

After that set, Mendenhall then sent the players back for a second round when another outburst interrupted the practice."

Wow. I've never heard of a dislocated neck before. I figured if your neck dislocated you were dead.

I hope he recovers fully.

I never said I was happy about it. I'm just curious how their loss compares to ours. That's not insensitive at all. I don't know the kid personally and it sounds he'll be OK, so my obvious concern is about football. This wouldn't even be a thread if we weren't playing them.

and if he had a 5 1/2 hr surgery, you know it was way, way serious.  wish him a complete recovery.

Your denial reminds me of a time very early in my career when my boss accused me of being defensive, and I responded (earnestly, not looking for yuks): "I'm not being goddamned defensive!".  Then I paused, took a breath, tried to stay chagrined, but instead laughed.

Well-played sir, after the initial lead zeppelin of a joke.  Best wishes to Colby on a quick recovery, as this sounds pretty darn serious.

I just hope the young man can walk across a room and hug somebody without difficulty.

Football is secondary.
