Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This will be the thread for snowflakes and hot takes on the defense and defensive playcalling in the BYU game.

Our Defense has allowed just 7 points (which were garbage time points) through the last ELEVEN QUARTERS of football. Let that sink in for a moment.

And this was a ranked team.

Also, Mangum may technically be a “freshman,” but he’s a 22-year-old freshman who was Elite 11 co-MVP (alongside Jameis Winston).

I can’t remember the last time we had a Michigan performance this satisfying.

I'm insanely excited after this game, so I'm not trying to temper that, but I don't get why everyone makes the point that he's technically a freshman but 22 years old. The dude wasn't off practicing with NFL squads for a couple years. He was on a Mormon mission. If anything, I'd think the time off left him further behind than he would have been out of college.

Disappointing ending. Allowed them to break 100 yards at the end. This unit better figure out how to close games or it's going to be a long season.

(I don't really have to add a /s, do I? That was freaking awesome.)

No fumble or interception returns for a touchdown.  Defense needs to be more opportunistic.  I didn't even see one stuffed animal being shoved in the face of our linebackers.  How can the coaches motivate the players without stuffed animals?  Maybe they can hire Gerg as a consultant...

By the way they almost all return in DBs and DLs (cept Wilson of top guys) next yr.   Get me 2 grad transfer LBs for 16 and sit back and enjoy.

We have a great D. Our secondary looks really good. Good pass rush. We are probably top 10 D. Looking forward to rest of the games. We should be able to hang with anyone.

I don't want to jump the gun, but even against true freshman QBs, great defenses rarely look so dominant. Only the elite can turn it such incredible performances. The D was absolutely suffocating. Those 6'5" WRs barely saw the ball all game.

When we went up 14-0 I actually thought "wow. I think this game is over"

Truly, the numbers say a lot for how we did against a talented BYU team - a ranked BYU team at that. We yielded 105 yards of offense over 50 plays, which comes out to 2.1 yards per play. Specifically on the ground, the Cougars gained only 50 yards on 22 rushes, which is a mere 2.27 yards per rush. Dominant may not do this justice on many levels. Crushing. Something like that.

I was irrationally upset they didn't get the shutout last week. Clearly the D was more upset than me. BYU was worn out, sure, but even still this was a dominant, beyond impressive performance. Held them to 100 yards of offense? I mean...
