Bye Week: NFL rooting interests and Harbaugh?

Submitted by PeterKlima on

For some reason I woke up this morning completely pissed at the job Hoke has done. I know.  I know.  Most of you live in that anger daily.  I like Hoke and I want him to succeed, but, man... sometimes.  (I have acknowledged he should be fired since the Utah game.)

Anyway, I want to think a little about the Harbaugh possibility.  Here are some "reasonable" assumptions:

1. Jim Harbaugh will not be back at SF next year, regardless of their outcome.

2. Other NFL teams are the biggest threat to Michigan landing Harbaugh.

But, which NFL spots are a "serious threat" and how can those change over the course of the year?

Who should are the most concerning team I root for or against on Sundays?

Oakland.  Obviously they are looking for a coach.  Big advantage is that Jim and his family would not have to move.  However, they are HORRIBLE.  I say we would want them to continue being horrible.  If they finished out the season strong, they could possibly become a factor.

Chicago.  Probably going to be looking for a coach and a traditionally good franchise.  They either need to finish so strong they keep their coach or fall off in an Oakland way.

Other than that, I couldn't really see Harbaugh taking another NFL gig that is likely to be open, unless he was just dead-set on staying in the NFL.  Remember his previous decision to join SF came down to college or SF.  He eliminated the Dolphins who offered him a lot more cash.  Plus, the way he WON in SF, but still did not get along with the management leads me to believe other NFL teams MIGHT be a little cautious about hiring him.  (Unless the also offered him the GM position?)

Any other teams I should keep an eye on?

I hadn't heard them as a potential landing spot for him.  I know Mrs Harbaugh wants to stay in the Bay area, but I think a return to AA would be more likely than Chicago.  I know its cold in both places, but THAT place is COOOOOOLD.

Not tryin to be a dick. I just still haven't seen anything making this anywhere near concrete. Just to be devils advocate... All we have to go on that he still may love michigan is a speech from 2004 and him mentioning bo occasionally during press conferences. Here's to hoping.

Just moved to Texas (San Marcos) and heard that story on the radio.  Apparently NFL teams are always courting San Antonio in order to convice their home cities to build a new stadium. Or sweeten the pot in some other way.  The radio guys were extremely cynical about it.  (Saying things like:  "Why do we do this to ourselves?")

It should be noted that there is no NFL-ready stadium in San Antonio.

Chicago will likely be in search mode but ever since the meteoric rise of Mike Ditka, the ownership group has never hired a strong personality as head coach. Even with a high dollar offer, would not see this as a good match for Mr. Harbaugh. He needs and wants control and the Bears do not have a history of supporting this idea.

Chicago is notorious for being cheap when paying coaches. Personally I think they look for the cheap fix, give Trestman one more year and find a new D-coordinator. Giants could be in play, rumors are Coughlin will retire at the end of the year. Jets will be looking for a new coach too. Those 2 and Oakland I think are our biggest competition.

You really don't think he would take the jets job if offered a gm position with it?  What about the giants who may be looking for a coach?  There are more teams.

Chicago won't fire their coach. He is only in his second year and in one of the hardest divisions in football with Cutler as his QB.
The fans will give him another year but I agree, hopefully Chicago finishes strong just in case.

You may be taking this too seriously. Nothing is worth waking up pissed. I want us to win, too. Badly. But these are decent people (coaches and players and administration) doing their best, sometimes well, sometimes not.

At this point, it seems difficult to impossible to know what would be appealing to JH. And if he wants to stay in the NFL, he'll be able to do that. If he wants to coach in college, he can do that. He can pretty much write his own ticket. Worst case scenario is he sits out a year, relaxes on a beach, and comes back later to whatever position he opens up that appeals to him.

threat to get Jimmy H.  I think that Chicago would be the No. 1 threat, Miami second, NY is doubtful and Oakland is a definite no.  Several people have asserted that Mrs. H wants to stay in the Bay area.  I have yet to ever read a quote or anything attributed directly to either Harbaugh that they have said that.  It's an assumption based Stanford>>>SF.  That's about all.......I think if Michigan handles thing correctly and behind the scenes, I think he'll be here starting early in Jan. 2015.    I'd be okay with Stoops, but I would be equally okay with Miles, because he just wins the in the toughest division in the toughest conference.

Interestingly, if you shuffle through the still unpostable probability matrix with the rest of San Francisco's schedule, the 49ers have a decent shot - if you want call something with 128 possible outcomes capable of a decent shot - of ending up 9-7 overall. Very rough math with 7 game yet to play in the regular season, but interesting. You may be right, of course - he might be coaching his last 7 games in San Francisco, but he will have done OK all the same if he leaves.

Choose Oakland over Michigan I think I would stop watching Michigan Football. Personally I think Harbaughs a act is more suited for college and not the pros where players make $10 mill a year.

Give me Harbaugh or Stoops! Unless them I will stay w Hoke

Historically Chicago doesn't pay their head coaches a lot, I'm not sure he is going there. It's possible because it's a better job than Oakland for sure. Something tells me he ends up in Oakland or San Diego if SF fires him.

NFL players do not Like Jim's college approach towards them. This is the main reason for the friction he has as coach with the 49ers. This may not change with a new team and Jim may be ready to head back to college. If he does, I think Michigan would be the place he would like to go. He's probably going to think about the NFL the remainder of this season and wonder if it  is the right fit form him. I think eventually Jim will get sick of coaching in the NFL and will want to be Michigan's coach. I'm just not sure when this will occur? At the end of this pro-season or 10 years from now?
