I'm sure I won't be the first

I'm sure I won't be the first to get this in, but fantastic title, I figured this was about the bench press number he put up today.

That said, glad to hear he's working hard. He's going to be needed in a big way next season.

From the MGoBoard FAQ

What should I title my threads?

Please make your thread titles as informative as possible: "Justin Feagin" is bad. "Justin Feagin leaving the team?" is good.

I think I'm going to post a threat that reads "What body part would you cut off to secure a Michigan win against Alabama in next season's opener?" My answer would be my right pinkie above the knuckle.

I should have been more specific. There would just be a stump remaining, so what is that -- the second and third phalange would go if Michigan could beat Bama?

You should go with your index

You should go with your index finger instead.  I once read an article about a football player who amputated his pinky so he could finish the season, and the writer talked to a finger specialist of some kind who actually said the pinky would be the last finger she'd recommend cutting off.  Apparently your strongest gripping muscles are the ones that control the pinky and without it you lose most of your ability to hold on tight to things.  She said the index is the most "loseable" finger because the middle finger can do anything the index finger can do.

I can verify this (sort of)

The pinky and ring finger on my left hand are somewhat messed-up ("messed-up" being a medical term).  You probably wouldn't notice it if you were sitting next to me on a plane.  I none-the-less have a lot more trouble gripping things with that hand than I did pre-injury.

Came here to bitch

Title and post not in proper 5 paragraph hamburger format. No clear thesis statement. Grammar is shoddy and your avatar is less than creative.

2/10, would not read again.

The Rutgers thread, however, is clear and much more interesting due to the clarity. I come to MGoBlog to read properly formated statements and opinions, not about "interesting, personal" stories that "may actually be worth discussing".

/s

All that aside, I have really liked what I've seen from Big Will Campbell (BWC for those who don't know) this past season. Yeah, he can get better, and it looks like he's trying. Let's hope for the best for him and the team.

370

Impressive for 99% of the world, but in the world of 300lb Senior DT's it is a non-event.   As evidenced by K. Demens indicating he already does it.

Glass is half full/Glass is half empy

What you say is fair enough.  I take it as good news, though, that BWC is (presumably) working hard.  He also has a decent amount of time before the season to improve that number (not that bench press, by itself, is important).

Ndamukong Suh

I saw Ndamukong Suh say recently on twitter that his bench max was "In my prime, 425 max."  So 370 isn't bad.

Also saw a video of Pipkins in the weight room and he got 315 three times.

Downvoted for uninformative

Downvoted for uninformative title. Good info, though I'm mostly surprised he wasn't benching that already, especially since his Rivals profile had him benching 395 out of high school.

I have a hard time believing that he was really at 395

Maybe Cass Tech's weight program is better than it's overall player development, but that seems like a fictional amount coming right out of high school.  Even a big, strong kid is going to have to have been doing some serious lifting to get to that number.

370 is pretty terrible for someone his size and has been in the program as long as he has... Down vote this all you want, but its the truth.   If he can get that over 400 by the time the season starts I will be mildly impressed.

A possibility:

If he's just now really tapping into his weight-lifting potential, he could go through a spurt before the season in which he adds quite a bit to his max.

Serious question: are we

Serious question: are we still using the "bench press max" measurement used during the Barwis era? If so, it's a wholly different lift than the typical bench press, as it involves holding the bar for 2 seconds, one inch above the chest, before beginning the push upward. Benching 370 in that manner would be pretty damn strong.

However, if the measure is simply "touch your chest, get it up, lock out," and he does 370, I have to agree that it isn't something to brag too much about But that being said, I think the bench press is way overrated as a measure for effective football strength. That list, to me, would put lifts such as squat, dead lift,  power clean (to name a few) ahead of bench press, as those other lifts are compound in nature, involve the lower back and legs, etc. Bench press is a great upper body lift, but I think I'd be most interested in what the big fella can squat, as he seems to have a high center of gravity and his legs seem a little weak, comparatively. A big problem for guys as heavy as Will is developing enough leg strength to not only play an entire game in a "crouch" sort of position, but developing excess strength in those areas so that the player can explode out of his stance and knock the crap out of the guy across from him, and do so from a position of leverage (i.e., lower to the ground).

A buddy of mine on the team

A buddy of mine on the team during the Barwis era, a WR, said Barwis didn't have him bench.  He would only have them incline, which I thought was interesting, and a more effective motion for the WR's to tailor their strength to for shedding blocks.

If BWC is inclining 370, I'll tip my hat to him.  I could be wrong, but I remember him coming into U of M being able to hit 315 for reps, which would show not too much improvement from freshman year to now.

That video of Martin training with Barwis shows him hitting 365 for reps and a 4 second negative.

In conclusion, I hope Campbell gets big enough to shed every block, every down, and pick up at least 3 sacks/game.

id have to agree.. my friend is a gym rat and he only weighs 170, yet he benched 225 10 times the other day..  and his max bench is well over 300.

I would think someone that weighs around 320 should be putting up well over 400

My college coach said that a good college athlete should be able to bench press his body weight 18 times.  Anyone ever qualify?

I was able to get 225 lb 17 times when I weighed 195 last year (maxed at like 345). Then I tore some cartildge in my shoulder so now I stick to 50 lb dumbells. It sucks

Used to

do 255 10 times every chest workout when I weighed 188 in college. 275 7 times. So probably could've done my weight 18 times. But frankly I didn't put much stock in doing anything 18 times.

I can relate to your woes. Now I do dumbbells only for shoulder protection, 70's with no injury, and am on the long road back to beasthood.

Yes?

I can.

Your college coach.  Was that a college football coach?  Because I don't think a lot of players on a football team can do that, and I don't think it necessarily translates for football players.

Marques Colston, WR for the saints, weighed in at 224 pounds and hit 225 twice at the nfl combine on the bench.  He seems to be doing alright though...

225x27 and 415x1 at 230 body weight. *flex* Bench, especially as it's performed at the combine, is a retarded test of football prowess. I'd be much more interested in D lineman's squat numbers.

I did

While only playing D3 football, and I am 100% certain that BWC would kick my a** if I lined up across from him. 230lbs - did 225 x 26.

Bench has so little to do with football.I would be interested to see how much he cleans or squats or deadlifts and have everone on here compare to that. Bench is a lot more of a confidence lift than anything else. As long as you can bench enough to 1. add weight to your frame and 2. lock out the guy across from you, you are all set.

Plus, with his long arms who is going to be able to bench him off? As long as he gets his hands on first, it should be a win for him.

*Edit, this was about 4 years ago...So I am now 200% sure he would kick my a**

That amount of weight......

........needs to be in context. For example, one rep of 370 is impressive, but not overly so. 5 reps of 370, or 370 at the end of a pyramid rep workout is VERY impressive.

My ex-HS wrestling coach used a pyramid workout that started with 10 reps of a weight, 8 reps of a heavier weight and so on down to one rep. At one point during our summer workout sessions he ended up with 505 on the bar for one rep. Just looking at that number is pretty damn impressive. But knowing that he did that after 10 reps of 350, 8 reps of 375, 6 reps of 400, 4 reps of 425, 3 reps of 450, and two reps of 475 is amazing.

So, If BWC put up 370 in any scenario other than a single rep during the workout, the number is quite impressive.

For the record, my old coach did a single workout rep once just because we begged him to and he put up just under 600.

I was going to say the same

I was going to say the same thing.  My guess is that BWC did something like 370 for 10 reps, which would be really impressive, particularly if it was after a workout.  Otherwise, not uber-impressive - I'm about 160 and can bench into the 200's and I go to the gym 3 times a week for about 30 minutes/day.

I am going to guess BWC has long arms

The length of your arms plays a large factor in the amount that you can bench press.  BWC seems to have pretty long arms.  Richardson and Martin have different builds and shorter arms.  So its not really comparing apples to apples.

BWC prob has 35 inch arms

BWC probably has 35 in arms, where a guy like Richardson is probably around 31.  Makes a big difference.  All the guys that lift well at the combine also tend to get knocked for having short arms.

Hope he keeps making strides. We're gonna need him to be solid if we're going to win the B1G next year. Interior DL is one of the question marks of this team going into next year. Hope BWC sees the potential for starting and takes advantage of it and produces.

370? Thats all he is

370? Thats all he is benching? That is suprisingly weak for a D1 DT. I was benching 350 my senior year of high school and got up to 385 be the end of my freshman year of college. Then my shoulders stopped working.

I am glad hes working his tail off, but I hope he gets much stronger before next season.

A far cry from Trent "The Beast" Richardson and his 475 mark. Not that I'm saying its easy, or that I'm trying to degrade BWC in any way. I couldn't put up 370 to save my own life. Hmmmm

long time visitor, first time poster obviously.

Had to create an account just to give some posters here some perspective about BWC's bench press number.  As one informed poster here already stated, BWC has long arms, which makes a huge difference in benching. People throwing around their bench press numbers and body weight is comical, especially since I can guarantee none are 6'5 or taller AND have ever played college football.

Anyway here is a short list of DL that had pretty good college careers and their bench press numbers respectively.

320 pound college Albert Haynesworth 425lbs max

340 pound college Vince Wilfork 375lbs max

300 pound collge Marcus Spears 405lbs max

Combine Kevin Williams 23 reps at 225

Combine Jimmy Kennedy 23 reps of 225

Combine Gerald Mccoy 23 reps of 225

And please stop with the Trent Richardson benches 500lbs talk.

Adrian Peterson was a better college prospect and will end up having a better nfl career.  But he's 6'2 (longer arms) and his max bench was only 345 lbs coming out of college. That's over 150lbs less than TR omgdz.  Does that mean AP is weak since half the posters here could out bench press or can hang with him at the gym?

Rant over.

Well Richardson also squats

Well Richardson also squats 600 which IS useful for driving through tackles.  I don't think anyone is arguing that lifting prowess = football ability, but it certainly helps.
