Butt Hurt

Submitted by Esterhaus on
No, not that. Jake Butt, who could have been earning NFL money right now and instead opted to give another year to Michigan. Jake appeared to have suffered a serious leg injury tonight. Let's use this thread to monitor Jake's health status and wish him speedy recovery in full.

In high school after partially tearing my ACL getting my leg rolled on, I completely tore my ACL running on a flat, straight track 8 months later while wearing the knee braces lineman wear to prevent tearing ACLs. Knee gave out, but was then able to walk to my car and drive home.

Learned to never judge injuries on how guys react afterwards.

Man, i would contribute to a fund Jake Butt account.  Dude gave his all.  He didn't sit out tonight.  He deserves props.  Mackey winner.

Feel so bad for the kid. A true Michigan Man and to go out like that after all he's given is heartbreaking. Best wishes and hopefully some good news comes his way.

....protocol generally is waiting 6-8 weeks for it to scar down while maintaining some level of cardiac capacity utilizing non-weight bearing activity (i.e.airdyne etc.). Having said that, its best to delay full diagnosis of full tissue involvement....one reason is that during competition the body releases endorphins which heighten pain threshold.

Hoping for the best as well - but it's not uncommon for players with ligament injuries to walk off to the sideline - though most who do so usually are moving much more gingerly. I'm assuming the severity of the injury somehow relates to the ability to walk off (or jog), but have no personal experience to confirm.

For what it's worth - an OL friend tore his ACL on one of the first plays of his team's drive, and stayed in for the remainder of said drive. They scored - but he said he was pretty useless, not being able to move laterally.

Ugh let's hope its not his ACL again after he tore one in February 2014. Kid is such a great player, and an ambassador for the programprogram, always gave his all.

MCL or ACL?  Really?  He walked off the field on his own, though.  I know absolutely nothing about medicine but I thought ligament tears didn't really allow for that?

I've torn both and then one of my reconstructions(skiing out west is tough on knees). Both initial ACL, plus meniscus tears during football sucked, but didn't prevent me from walking, or jogging awkwardly off the field. Hopefully he has a quick successful recovery as he gave as much to Michigan as I feel it gave to him.

Thing is he won't collect the money if he gets drafted and sign a contract. 4m won't be collected if he never play a down again. 2m is harder to prove because it would require a proof(aka not draft websites) that he was considered to be a 1st/2nd round pick by the NFL. Even then, he won't collect if he signs a contract.

The insurance provides only the worst case scenario for the player so Butt won't see a cent from it.

Can someone explain how his insurance policy pays out? I see on twitter, "Jake Butt took out $4M in total disability insurance. Took out $2M in loss of value insurance, would start collecting after Rd 2." So he gets $2 million if drafted in the third round or later? How does he get the other $2 million of the disability insurance?

I recall a few years ago hearing that these insurance companies have come up with some nonsense reasons to refuse to pay.   For example:

That said, this would be a particularly straightforward situation if he needs surgery.  The injury would be in the last game of his career and not long before the draft.

Hoping for the best for him, what a shame for this to happen...

and it would depend on the clauses (called riders) that are written into the contract. From what I've seen MDog is probably right. It sounds like the money is split evenly into 2 million each in short-term and long-term disability tied to his draft status due to potential loss of value.

Just set up a gofundme account.  Every MGoBlogger throw in $20.  $20 x 50,000 = $1MM.  The Michigan Difference.  Our fanbase has more cash than anyone else.

Which leg did he hurt during Spring Ball in 2014? Was it the same leg? I have no idea if that even makes a difference in terms of recovery. Hopefully the damage is not severe enough to force him out of all pre-draft workouts.

Here we go. People are going to reference him everytime in the "whether or not stars should play in bowl games argument." Maybe not. Maybe I'm overreacting because I am super butt hurt right now. Which is why I actually came to this thread.
