Burke SI Nat'l POY & All American

Title says it all. Congrats to Trey!

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/03/michigans_trey_burke_named_spo.html

Burke becomes Michigan's first national player of the year since Cazzie Russell was named NCAA Player of the Year in 1966.

The sophomore was also named to SI's five-man All-America team, joining Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart, Creighton's Doug McDermott, Gonzaga's Kelly Olynyk and Indiana's Cody Zeller.

No Oladipo on their All American team. This means he isn't going to be consensus, right?

I think he could still be a "consensus" All American, but he won't be Unanimous. Then again, there are tons of AA teams, I don't know who all the official ones are, and what percentage you need to be "consensus"

For the official designation of consensus All-American, the NCAA doesn't use the SI team. The four teams used are Sporting News, USBWA, NABC, and AP. Both Burke and Oladipo have already been named first team by both SN and USBWA. The other two are forthcoming.

For the second time in less than a day, we are congratulating Trey Burke on another honor (two really, if we think of SI National Player Of The Year and being named to the All-American team there), and for his contribution to Michigan, another well-deserved one at that.

Sam Webb has said that Darius Morris's success opened the eyes of h.s. PGs as to the extent to which they could thrive in Beilein's system, something they apparently doubted at one time.  Now Michigan's PG is the Player of the Year.  It accordingly shouldn't be too hard to find PGs going forward.

But their website (linked above) says announced the 12th and voting is through the 27th:

Hundreds of members of the college basketball media will vote on the Wooden Award Player of the Year and All American team from 9:00 AM EST (6:00 AM PST), Monday, March 18, 2013, through 3:00 PM EST (Noon – PST), Wednesday, March 27, 2013, either online or through the mail.

The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year will be announced at the 2013 Wooden Award Gala presented by Wendy’s on April 12, 2013, at The Los Angeles Athletic Club. The Gala will honor the Men’s and Women’s Wooden Award winners, All Americans and the Legends of Coaching Award winner, Kansas Head Coach Bill Self.

So I don't know if that's just formal and they're going to make it public the Final Four weekend (because how else could they get the winner there?) or if they've changed their format.

Your first quote above is for the women's Wooden Award, not the men's. Here's the quote from the men's press release:

Voting will take place from March 18th through March 25th, allowing voters to account for the first weekend of competition in the NCAA Tournament.

And it also says:

The John R. Wooden Award Player of the Year presented by Wendy’s will be announced on ESPN during the Final Four Weekend in Atlanta.

I also wanted to note that the four awards I listed above are some of the major POY awards, along with those awarded by AP, NABC, and Basketball Times—at least if you go by what the NCAA includes in its official Award Winners publication (see p. 10). SI isn't included, but kudos to Trey Burke for receiving this honor, nonetheless.

Wouldn't think the front page of their homepage would be about the women's award, but it obviously is.

Fantastic achievement by Trey!
He will probably be here for only 2 years and might not compare statistically with players who have played out their eligibility. He was an integral part of one banner achievement (BIG regular season title) last year and of course he will probably be a consensus all-American and win multiple NPOY awards this year.
With his current body of work, I wonder what his chances are of one day having his number in the rafters at Crisler. What would his chances be if he leads an unlikely run to the final four?

The guys that came before Trey that made Michigan competitive again were the beginning of "a renewed Michigan basketball".  Guys like Zack Novak and Stu made this possible, without them bringing the team back to the tourney, Burke probably honors his original committment to PSU...

Trey has continued where his predecessors left off and taken it to another level.  Props to him for being a great representative of the program.

The swag is back.

Maybe I'll revisit my thoughts on the "deterioration of SI."  Nah: they just happened to get this one right.

Do you think Trey Burke dreamed of the day he would be mentioned in the same sentence as  Doug  McDermott and Kelly Olynyk?

Smart is young and Trey is improving his overall game but this is an underwhelming group of basketball players.
