Buckeye fans talk smack to D. Thomas

Submitted by drewro02 on

This quote from Dymonte about how he was treated by ohio fans at his recent game:

In the recruiting game, It's Ohio State fans who didn't get the win in the Dymonte Thomas sweepstakes. Many didn't take the loss so well, especially since it came to their biggest rival. According to the player himself, some Buckeye fans are showing resentment.

"A lot of people here at the Louisville game were yelling 'O-H-I-O' and saying how bad Michigan sucks and everything, but I just let that go in one ear and out the other," he said. "I think a lot of people are just mad because they didn't get the chance to be in that predicament to choose between colleges. I went with my heart and I felt what was right."

Seems like this is a little less than the kind of stuff Kalis was hearing, but is this kind of stuff really necessary against a 16 year old kid? Just seems a little excessive to me, but maybe I am just being naive. Not to mention the fact that ohio was too dumb to still not have offered Thomas yet. Maybe they should be yelling at their coaching staff rather than a 16 year old kid. Then again, that would mean their fans would have to do some kind of research to realize that they still haven't offered one of the best players in the 2013 class in the state.

I am originally from Ohio and all the Buckeye fans just rattle on about how they are better than Michigan, blah, blah, blah. They always say we will keep beating Michigan. I tell them that what they don't realize is that we are killing them in recruiting in state this year, and that talent pool they are used to won't be there in a few years, but they still don't listen. Half of them couldn't name one recruit that is committed to ohio for next season. I never realized until I got older just how ignorant many Buckeye fans are. I am so glad that I went the other way growing up in Ohio, and root for the maize and blue. So many of them just lack total class in knowledge when it comes to college football.

If you believe the research that Duane Long does Thomas just became the second best safety prospect in ohio.  It is strange how that happened right after he chose to commit to Michigan.

Jay Powell is great. i was too involved in watching howland's rb (da'vion smith) last week, and he isn't surrounded with the kind of talent harding is used too, but yeah, he's really good.

harding has sent prescott burgess, mario manningham, carl diggs (and dj williamson fwiw) among others in the last 10 years.

edit: for the record, i'm hearing da'vion has grown up a michigan fan. this is probably a tad off the reservation, but he reminded me and my buddy a LOT of maurice clarett (hs player of the year as much as we hate him) in hs. clarett had more speed, but this kid runs HARD and i'm curious if he's on anyone's radar.

Before Friday I was arguing that Warren Harding's Jalyn Powell is closer to Thomas than the experts might think. After seeing them both in person, I feel that it is Thomas that is just behind Powell. Powell is a ball hawk and actually the better hitter. I'd like to word this in a specific way. Dymonte Thomas has the higher ceiling, which in large part is what recruiting and the scouting of recruits is all about. But, not only do I feel that Jalyn Powell is the better safety today, I believe he is more likely to reach his ceiling. Powell is a natural gamer and I don't think that that is something that is easy to learn. Make no mistake, I would much rather see him in Scarlet than in Blue, but now I have him as number 2 instead of 1 for Ohio's safety class.

There was an study about research itself made by Terrelle Pryor himself, it seems like it might be useful right now

Research:

Terrelle Pryor

Research is the most used resource to finding out something you need from school papers to things you want to buy. Research is also used to find cheaper shopping supplies. For instance one store may have had a pricey type of material one was looking for and the other store you researched was a couple dollars cheaper. Coming out of high school I was thinking to my self what I wanted to do for a living and what I wanted to major in to start the quest for my job. Research is also used to find shopping cheaper shopping supplies.

I used the research process to find out what type of job specific major I wanted to major in and what type of job I wanted to do when I graduated from college. I researched different types of jobs, Criminal justice, business, communications, and education. I came up with criminal justice but couldn’t decide between business and criminal justice. I did research on business and did their pros and cons. Then, I did the pros and cons of criminal justice. I came up with in the business world you can either have a good chance at the type of business you want to start or a bad business that won’t sell or bring in money.

Another part of my research I did was the most important factors in the business, was what they want for what they can afford and is there a profit that can help me out to make some extra money. The availability of the job openings, the job entails, the pay hours. I looked up also whether I would have to be in school for along time or not to get a job. Also my personal enjoyment in the job would I love to do every day I woke up to go to work.

With out research I would not have been able to get these types of information for the job that I want to do for the rest of my life. If one would just go and do something with out researching first they could’ve missed something that could have later benefited later on or benefited one more then the other.

Didn't wanna give up too much of the article, but it also says he is on Dunn like crazy about coming to UM. Dymonte's exact words are that he thinks Dunn is getting closer and closer.

"I talk to him all the time about it," Thomas said. "I'm like 'Hey man, are you ready to go? It's time to commit, let's go.' He's getting closer and closer."

They just assume all these guys won't actually go...

Seriously, signing day ... when all these Ohio kids in 2012 sign their LOI, that's when it'll start hitting home for these guys .. that these guys really are coming to Michigan.

Which is reason #2 or 3 why you don't pick on high school kids for their verbal commitments.

Thomas doesn't seem like a good example, but what if Michigan was his safety net while he waited for OSU to offer? It happens. And now a couple of myopic fans have potentially jeopardized any chance their school had with him. Fans may not be able to change games, but they can definitely affect recruiting.

Buckeye fans are classless morons?  First I've heard of this...shocked and appalled.  Shocked and appalled.  Next you'll tell me that spartan fans are bad at life...

Personally I would never make fun/harass some 16/17/18yr old that is making a decision that he thinks is best for his future. If some kids grows up in Michigan and goes to OSU, I would not be upset. I might be disappointed that my team (Michigan) didn't get the kid to come to their school but every kids situation is different. I think it is pretty lame to rag on some High School kid because he didn't pick "your" school.

I hope OSU fans continue to do this. A) It makes the players less likely to decommit and go to OSU B) It allows other players to wonder if these are the fans they want to play for and represent

I'm sure Dymonte will remember that heckling when he finally gets his tOSU offer. Do they not realize that the more they heckle him, the less likely he is to go to ohio state?

We have so many guys that are highly rated and still looking hard at Michigan.  It will be hard to limit it to 4 more kids.  I wish we had 10 spots left but I feel confident that Coach Hoke and Co. will take the 4 or 5 that they feel best fit our system.  TIM  Go Blue

I don't see why any kid would want to play for their fan base.  It is like the redneck mafia down there.  If you say anything bad about the Ohio family, like Herbstreit or the ton of players who spoke up about the "extra" stuff you get by being a member of the team, you get death threats and other threats that get so bad that you have to leave the state.  Thomas chose wisely by picking us, and hopefully he can sway Dunn also.

As someone still (unfortunately) living in Ohio, this is totally unsurprising.  Most OSU fans are arrogant, obnoxious and, at best, barely tolerable.  It's hard to find a worse batch of winners or losers than Buckeye fans.

Even many OSU fans that seem like nice people become complete assholes when they see anything Michigan.  I don't even have Michigan decals on my car because I know that when I take it in for service there would suddenly be lots of expensive things wrong with it.

if the fans are only talking crap about how bad they think U of M sucks and chanting O-H-I-O then there should be no problem unless they start aiming their insults at him personally.  In all honesty I'm sure he has heard that U of M sucks his entire life, whats a little more after he has comitted

It's meanness, not trying to sway him I think. If you knew a guy in high school from, eh, Royal Oak, who'd chosen to play at Ohio State, who didn't even get a Michigan offer, you wouldn't want to guilt him into waiting for Michigan to call back. You rib the guy. You'd call him "traitor" sometimes in jest and maybe give him some crap for "not getting in." High school guys do that.

That probably accounts for most of the crap these guys get. There's a sub-set within them though of people who don't feel like they fit in, so they seize on things that would necessarily include them. Some folks are giving some rivalric ribbing, so they see an opportunity to "US vs THEM" -- which is the only way the jerk can get into the "US" category.

There are plenty of jerks out there. We've certainly got them too. I know a few. Best to ignore them. As for the rest, take it with a smile. High school dudes rip on each other -- if you act all sensitive then people feel like you're forcing them to act careful around you, and having to act all careful is uncomfortable and there's plenty of time in family and later work and life when you absolutely must be careful.

That's my ramble.

There is a big difference how Ohio fans act, compared to other states.

I grew up in Ohio, then in Michigan, then went to UM.  I have lived all over, including the south.

Ohio is the most insane by far.

In SEC country, sure they love their football.  They love players.  But there is not the complete hatred to hometown heroes going to play elsewhere there is in Ohio.  Part of it is that the other schools have always competed for recruits.  Also, none of those states outside of La is dominated by only one school.

In Michigan, when players go out of state...we are disappointed, but there is not a lot of hatred there.

In Ohio..there is outright hatred.  I never understood that until I moved back here a few years ago.  I thought the fan craziness was blown out of proportion...I was wrong.

I really respect kids like Kalis and Dymonte. It is not an easy road for an 17 year old.  And if they flip, and go to OSU...it will suck, but I would wish them the best.  I would be sorely disappointed, and hurl a few curse words at the computer...but would never do it to their face.  That is the difference.

I also currently live in Ohio.  My daughter came home crying from preschool last year on "Fan Day" (OSU day).  It was her first experience of discrimination.  She was singled out and forced to stand alone while the other kids wearing ohio colors were banded together.  i imagine there were a handful of ND fans but she felt the isolation of not wearing the colors of choice.

they also had name cards on what was explained to me to be a buckeye (the state nut of course) but the face on the hareless nut looked very similar to that brutus fellow.

BlueDragon

for Ohio schools.  If you don't root for Ohio State, you will get crap growing up in the schools.  I  never got name tags with Brutus on them.  That's taking the stupidity to a whole new level.  I don't know, maybe burn it or something.

The choice of Brutus as the Buckeye symbol also is odd in that Brutus, historically, was a member of a conspiracy.*  While some might assign a nobility to his cause, an undeniable fact remains: He dishonestly pretended to be a friend, then betrayed his friend (Caesar).

But, I guess that's not so bad.  After all, "Everybody kills."

*A guy named Cicero also was involved. (sound familar?  Think lawyer, Tressel)

Why should Caesar get to stomp around like a giant, while the rest of us try not to get smushed under his big feet? What's so great about Caesar? Hm? Brutus is just as cute as Caesar. Brutus is just as smart as Caesar. People totally like Brutus just as much as they like Caesar. And when did it become okay for one person to be the boss of everybody, huh? Because that's not what Rome is about. WE SHOULD TOTALLY JUST STAB CAESAR!

michelin

September 17th, 2011 at 10:34 AM ^

Today, Caesar has all these great things named after him.

Caesar’s palace

Caesar salad

Scores of Italian restaurants named Caesar's

Even Little Caesar’s pizza.. and....the ultimate topping,

the Little Caesar’s Pizza Bowl (formerly the motor city bowl)

While Brutus—poor fellow--has nothing, except for the abject misery of being a mascot for one of the most dishonest athletic programs in history.

A lot of these OSU fans really are ashamed of themselves and their team.   In fact, fewer and fewer are even wearing OSU gear anymore.  Retail sales of OSU insignia merchandise have fallen off a cliff.

So, in reality, I suspect that the loudest of these OSU critics of Dymonte really envy him.  Unlike them, he’s free of the Scarlet Letter: the Ohio State symbol of shame.

I remember my freshmen year meeting a girl from Dublin who said she was booed in church when they announced that she was going to Michigan. Another guy said that his father (a doctor) had patients switch to another doctor when they found out that his son was going here. So yeah, that state sucks!
