Buchanan released & Lions get DT Williams from Browns

Williams is a starting DT & Buchanan leaves zero starting CBs. Could this be the first move in trading down into the mid-1st round to get a starting CB? So many positions of need that the extra draft picks are needed more than Suh/McCoy?
I have thought all along that while Suh/McCoy are great players, Detroit just can't afford a second major contract (after Staffords last year) for a rookie. I am hoping they can trade down and get a couple of lower first round or second round picks and use them in areas of need.
Unless you get a lot of picks, you have to take someone like Suh or McCoy. These are gamechangers on the line. I know, they are expensive...but I think you have to take the bite.
As for CB...other than Eric Berry, is there any real superstars in the backfield? I don't think so. You could pick up a host of guys in the 2-4 rounds.
The one caveat is if you get multiple first and second round picks...then it would probably be worth it.
in the later rounds?
This is the one year I don't want to trade down. I want Suh dammit.
to get kvb from scharz' old team instead.
No, I don't think this move has any impact on drafting Suh with the 2nd pick (if he's available). If anything, it makes drafting Suh even better because he can get acclimated to the NFL by playing in a rotation. Suh is a pretty versatile DT and there is definitely ways to get him on the field.
For them to get Warren with their 3rd round pick. Since it seems to be a secret that ONLY people in Southeast Michigan know about - that Warren is indeed 1st round talent - perhaps he will fall and the Lions get a steal.
Is it a secret or do we have tinted glasses on?
I think its a bit of both. He's probably better than the 5th or 6th round pick he's been projected at, but he's also not a 1st or 2nd rounder.
I don't really like it when the Lions draft Michigan players. It just seems they have a knack for ruining talent. However, the jury is still out on the Schwartz, so maybe he would be ok... I just have a hard time trusting them after so many years.
If we're trading down, I really hope it's for Mike Iupati (OG). Then if we've got two 2nd rounders, grab the best two Dlinemen and then Warren in the 3rd. It's not a sexy draft, but it's a pretty solid foundation.
That said, this draft is different for me. For once, I trust the folks making the decisions so I'm honestly not worried about it. We've got lots of good options.
They could have threw a flag for holding on Iupati on every play. He doesn't punch with his hands which always leaves them on the outside which will get called in the NFL.
I still think they take Suh if he's available and play him alongside Williams. Add in VandenBosch and you're one DE away from having what is potentially a very good front four.
I'm not paticular happy with the Burleson signing because I think they overpaid for a guy who's already been on two teams and had a career year (maybe only year) last season.
No I didn't watch the Senior Bowl, I was probably getting laid or wrestling a bear. Like I said before, I trust the lions to make a good choice now.
It will be next to impossible for the Lions to trade down. Nobody likes trading up into the top 5 picks any more. However, if the scenario plays out and they trade back to 15 or so, they can pick up Brandon Graham. Hypothetically, if they pick up another 1st round or another 2nd round pick in the trade then they can grab a CB with that pick. CB's seem to be becoming impact players in their first year on the field more and more these days.
It's certainly true that people miscalculate how hard it is to trade down.
However, the bucs, skins, seahawks, browns, and bills are all potential QB takers in the top-10 and there's really only two guys worth that kind of selection. A small leapfrog trade is definitely possible and we're in the prime spot to deal because our needs make us extremely flexible about where we land.
