Bruce Feldman profile of William Gholston

Submitted by Leaders And Best on

Bruce Feldman did a profile on William Gholston today, most of it focused on his acts in the Michigan game last year and suspension that followed.  Some interesting Michigan related notes:

1. Feldman fails to point out that Gholston used an illegal armbar to injure Lewan on the first series. Someone should send him some video of this.

2. MSU coaches claim that Gholston was just responding to repeated cheap shots by Michigan (yet ignoring the Gholston armbar).

3. MSU coaches claim 2 other schools documented cheap shots made by Michigan. All anonymous claims by MSU.

"Some around the Spartans program reasoned that while Gholston was wrong for his reaction in the Michigan game, they also noted that after studying the game film that he lost his poise after he repeatedly was cheap-shotted. They'll tell you how two other Big Ten programs contacted Michigan State after the Michigan game to inform them about cheap shots by the Wolverines that they also documented."

This can only be from the following teams if it did indeed occur the week after the game: Minnesota and Northwestern as they were the only Big Ten teams we played before MSU.  This sounds fabricated to me.

4. No mention of the false claims made by MSU immediately after the game that Lewan used racial slurs to try to justify Gholston's actions.

The entire point of Feldman's article was to point out that the guy is so much more than one incident, delving into a tough background where he left his home at the age of 14 and floated around during his high school years, and so you fixate on the incident and the violations that Feldman supposedly missed when he was prefacing his article? The entire point of the article is to flesh him out as a person instead of a goon by interviewing his coaches and teammates, which is pretty standard practice among journalists.

He's been vilified a thousand times over by this fanbase at this point. Isn't it a little pathetic that we can't move past it at this point? Sure Dantonio was going to let it slide, but the league punished his crime.

I'm more bitter when I think that if Hoke was here, there is no way he would be at MSU, but there's nothing we can do about that either. He happens to be a very good football player, and his size, skill, and dedication are going to allow him to rise above his background and that's pretty damn cool no matter who he is.

The boat sank, get over it.

If indeed Denard suffered a career-ending neck injury on that play, the fallout would have been cataclysmic.  A story that would have transcended sport, law and society.

And if Taylor Lewan had suffered an elbow dislocation (he nearly did; he left the game for a series or two, right?) it would have dramatically altered the game (which was Gholston's intent no doubt).

OP... I'm worried about ya man.  Come back to Earth!!

I didn't see anything in there about MSU coaches claming Gholston responded to "repeated cheap shots" and I didn't see anything about MSU coaches claiming 2 other schools documenting anything from us.  And I don't see anything "made by MSU" immediately after the game claiming there were racial slurs uttered.  Nothing at all.

What WG was bad, I think we all agree on that, but this thread seems to be an unncessary reminder.  I say let them settle it on the field.

I wonder exactly what rewards were given out by the coaches to MSU players that were part of the bounty program? I hope the big ten makes a statement about the MSU bounty program in the near future.

You would have to imagine that all our entire team and coaching staff have reviewed the film and we will not be caught off guard by Sparty and definitely this thug. I hope Taylor pounds him to the ground and based on what I have been reading on this board, that's exactly what will happen with Taylor commitment to be a leader. As for the thugs reaction to getting his ankles broken against DRob, he going to get a strong dose of that again. Play within the rules....and paybacks a bitch. Beat Sparty.

The best revenge is success. Win the damn ballgame next fall and then we can launch the countdown clock to the heavens. Space bitches, space.

Who really cares what person he is off the field..if he viciously hurts other players on the field, he needs to be taught a lesson. He had issues growing up with his family and living situation...fine. He's not the first nor will he be the last. That does NOT mean we forgive him as a fan base nor will we forget. He deserves all the chastising he's received and I wouldn't be surprised if this is a systemic personality issue. I'm also wondering who projects higher in the upcoming draft, Lewan, or Thug.

37 holds by Lewan that game - all recorded and sent to the committee.

This is going to hurt Lewan more than that punch to the helmet.

Will Lewan be under new additional scrutiny from B1G referees?  He's been getting that since he was a freshman.

Gholston, assuredly, as a post-suspension player, will be getting the same kind of scrutiny.

I knew both of those things before you posted anything.  So I really am curious how a Michigan-hater thinks Lewan or the team will be "hurt."

wow Feldman really did a suck off piece on Gholston didnt he?  I didnt think he was that type of writer.  May now have to consider my opinion of him.  If Feldman is now a fan boy typical writer, spinning rumours to glorify his targeted puff piece...well that just blows every good thing anyone ever said about his integrity as a writer.
