Brionte / Recruiting Thread

Submitted by 1464 on

Haven't seen a thread about recruiting today, which is my biggest interest from now until the bowl game.  Here is a LINK which quotes Brionte as saying he does not want to play in a spread offense.  Not exactly new news but it is the first quote I've seen directly from him.

Any other recruiting updates?

The last I heard (which is from last week) was that Dunn was going to take an official in December, the same weekend that Kalis is.  Also, Dunn will be an early enrollee.

Pancake done, flip em.

Rooted in rationality or no, I think that it will be a continuing benefit to Michigan that at least some people will think that Michigan's (future) offense will better prepare players for the pros.  It will also just be a better fit for some players, Dunn being one of them.

the initial contact with Urban Meyer.  We know Urban's a heckuva liar, so that's not exactly going to help us.  We need to get one of our agents on a phone tap STAT.

In all seriousness though, I'm a bit worried about the emergence of Fitzkreig.  Could scare off Dunn if he's hoping for an early starting role.

Even Urban said mattison is one of the best recruiters in the country.

And if anything, the emergence of Fitz should ENCOURAGE him, since he's the first 1,000 yard RB UM has had since Hart.  Encouraging when you think Denard also has 1,000, so once he graduates there will be more touches to go around.

Yeah, I highly doubt Fitz's recent performance has done anything but help Michigan's chances with Dunn. If he was scared of competition, he wouldn't have committed to OSU when Warren Ball—a 2012 RB who's nearly as highly-rated as Dunn—was already in the fold for the Buckeyes. Michigan's RB situation from a depth perspective—even with the emergence of Toussaint—is more conducive to early playing time and a future role as the featured, workhorse back. I think Dunn would come in next year and get 5-10 touches a game as the primary backup, and his role would only expand from there.

All signs point to Michigan in this one. Not saying it's a done deal, but hiring Meyer may have eliminated whatever shot OSU had left of retaining Dunn. Dunn won't play in a spread, and while Meyer will try to sell him on the program and his system, I don't think he can deny that he's going to run a spread—that's what he does, period.

The in-season "quiet period" actually ended yesterday, and we're now in a "contact period" until January 28th, with a couple of brief dead periods in there for the holidays. The coaches are now allowed to call recruits once a week and make an in-home visit once a week. Handy recruiting calendar with definitions here.

Mostly because Fitz's success demonstrates an offensive mindset that would benefit someone like Dunn. Howeva, with Fitz having two years of eligibility, I see where you are coming from.

If he doesn't want the spread, then OSU and Urban should be eliminated.  Hoke/Borges will be majority pro style once Denard leaves, so Brionte won't miss anything if he RS (which would be a probability).

You can run effectively out of a spread as well.  See the Neb game.  Fitz tore that game up, despite Denard's ground game being a little off.

I think when a RB says "I don't want to play in a spread" they mean "I don't want to play in a spread where I basically am an extra FB for the QB".  Also many RBs are not a huge fan of option ball.

Borges has shown he considers handing the ball off in the backfield to be an important piece of his offense and will use it even with Denard as the QB.  So I don't our version of the spread is going to scare anyone off.  With Borges the RB gets touches, the ball in the backfield where they can pick a gap, make cuts, and everything else they want.

I'm not trying to pick fights here, but what makes you think Devin has a bigger arm than Denard....Have you watched any games this year? I have not seen Devin throw anything other than lame ducks this entire season. The notion that Denard doesn't have a big arm is a misconception. He isn't all that accurate at times, but he has a much stronger arm than Gardner from what I have witnessed to this point. I'm just sayin'.

everyone seems pretty convinced that Hoke and Borges are gonna go to a pro style offense but i have a feeling that there will be a lot of spread elements in the coming years.

Still is very clear that he really wanted to and still wants to go to Ohio. Nothing against the kid but we were and still are the second choice. Dont get me wrong . . . still love to be the one on signing day, and unless Urban is willing to start his tenure by straight lying to a top recruit he will probably be in AA for good!!

Yeah, I am a little concerned that it appears Dunn will be choosing UM with his head while his heart is still all OSU. That might get him to AA but will he be willing to stick it out if things get "bumpy" at UM for him?

(NOTE: I am not making a comment on Dunn's level of commitment or attempting in any way to disparage him. My point is merely that it is ususally easier to stick to a decision that is actually in line with your true desire (heart) than one made rationally (head).)

It doesn't matter. One player doesn't make a team. Urban Meyer wil be good at OSU, no doubt. But no way he recreates the success he had at Florida. All the hype he's getting is just setting him up to fail the high expectations. When ND fires Brian Kelly in 2 years, who is going to be the number one candidate? HEHEEHEHEHE...

This is from the free part of the article:  he is waiting to talk to Urban.

The not-free part of the article suggests that he will make is decision pretty soon after talking Urban, he is quoted as not liking the spread (even specifically what he ran at Florida), and that he is taking an official in the middle of December.  He also confirms he will be enrolling early.
