Brionte Dunn visiting this weekend

Per twitter: Allen Trieu Canton Glenoak (OH) RB Brionte Dunn to visit #Michigan this weekend.

Presumably he will be there this weekend with the Farmington Hills Harrison trio.  It's also being reported that with Ojemudia possibly close to committing to Michigan, Burbridge might not be so much of a MSU lock.  This could end up being a HUGE weekend for Michigan recruiting.

EDIT: See Tom VH's response below regarding Ojemudia & Burbridge, as well as Dunn.

Burbridge

Even if Ojemudia commits, it might not matter with Burbridge. He reportedly doesn't have the grades to get into UM. Either way, it could still be a big weekend without Burbridge.

Can everyone stop with the grades thing. Grades are mentioned everytime this kids name comes up, its embarrassing. Plus, he has an entire year before graduation, nothing has been determined yet.

Why stop

If it is a serious concern, why not bring it up? After RichRod brought in several kids who couldn't qualify, I would like to get back to recruiting "sure things" when it comes to grades. I don't like missing out on other recruits by chasing a kid that may not even qualify. It brings back bad memories of the Dorsey/Parker fiasco.

I feel like grades are a private matter. When a final determination is made as to whether he qualifies, then it might be news. Until then, I think he should have some privacy regarding his grades.

So far at least

the grade issues have been described as being not that different from Thomas Rawls's.  Obviously no one knows the real situation, but Michigan isn't completely unwilling to take borderline academic guys as long as they're actually qualified.

Parker?

Who are you talking about?  The only Parker was Sean Parker  and he was an EE at Washington.

I think it's agreed upon

that Sean Parker was essentially going to Michigan until a last moment change of heart. (Sam Webb had even offered up his "gut feeling")

If he enrolled early, then Washington's semester starts really late.  Parker changed his choice at the very last minute.

He changed "really late" only relative to his decision timeline. He committed to Washington around Christmas and enrolled early in Seattle.

really?

Michigan fans thought they were going to get Parker up until the even of National Signing Day, and Rivals says he committed to UW on February 3, 2010.

Tom

do you have a sense of whether Dunn's interest is real?  Or do you think he's just looking for backup plans in case the Vest gets the axe?

Yes, his interest is very real. His dad is very interested in what happens with the NCAA stuff, but has said the Michigan coaches have been recruiting him very hard.

I actually just talked to his dad to confirm this and they will be up there on Friday for the day.

It will be great

It will be great entertainment to patrol the RCMB if the other two FHH guys committ.  I can't wait!

Btw, how good is this Burbridge kid?  I haven't really heard much of him until lately.

He's a four star on scout. Either he or Ross are thought to be the top in-state prospect.

He might be the top WR in the state. I'm not sure about Efe Scott-Emukapor but he is Rivals 250 watch guy. At this time he has no offer which is strange for a guy that might be in the top 250.

Watch his video

Burbridge looks like the real deal - Fred Jackson would say: "He's kinda like Mario Manningham but faster and much more physical"..... and I would agree.  Check it out:

I'm sold. After watching only the first few minutes of the video I was really impressed. Certain guys are good return men and some are REALLY good. He looks like the latter. He adjusts really well to the ball and makes some difficult catches. If Tom says not to put too much into his grades, then I'm sold for sure.

Yeah, Burbridge would be a huge get if he can stick for Michigan. We really could use an impact wide out with Stones, Hemmingway, and Odoms due to graduate. I think Burbridge could possibly step in right away and make an impact for senior Denard. I would love to have this kid on the team if he can qualify. If he can't, I hate that we put guys who we put in the position to join, but fail. I hope he can make it.

Oddly enough

nobody has mentioned this yet. We have made note that our recruits have been commiting in pairs: 2 OL, 2 LB, 2 TE, and 2 MOAR LB. But has anyone noticed that in each set of 2, there is one from Michigan and one from Ohio, leaving us with a perfect 1:1 ratio between the two states?

"I think the hype over (Insert 2012 recruit name here) is funny considering he hasn't played a down in college football" is probably applicable to most of the recruits we're talking about here on the MGoInterwebs...

Dunn

Getting Dunn would be an unqualified success by Hoke and company.  Seriously, he is taking up just about all of the in-state talent - huge gain for us and a direct strike at Sparty.

This weekend could be huge.

Clarification

I am aware that   Dunn is from Ohio.  And, I get that Ohio is a separate state from Michigan.  I could have been clearer, but I was really making two separate and somewhat unrelated statements:

Statement 1:  Dunn would be a good get.

Statement 2:  We are cleaning up on in-state recruiting which is a blow to MSU.

However, I must admit, that I do consider "in-state" to include Ohio despite the fact that it is, in fact, its own state.  There are several power schools in Ohio that are geographically closer to Michigan and which have been considere Michigan pipelines.

Dunn

Interesting that he committed to tosu way back in September--and that other than a generic 3 star receiver, no one has committed to tosu since the Tressel scandal broke.  As Tatgate drags on and other buckeye targets hesitate to commit, this could turn into a truly mediocre recruiting year for Tressel.  If a star like Dunn should switch, that can only exacerbate the situation for Tressel with other recruits.

He is a legacy recruit that was going to commit anyways. That just goes to show that the scandal might be affecting the recruits. Also at the same time it is too early to tell.

OSU recruiting

OSU is also very differenty with their recruiting strategy. They are very selective at first, especially this year with their low number of scholarships available. As guys begin to fall, they begin to send out more offers. UM on the other hand seem to have sent out an offer to every top prospect in the midwest and a large number nationwide and is seeing who is biting.

That could also be the reason

That could also be the reason that it seems as though we're stealing him from tOSU.  Well, other than that we sort of are, since he's committed.  But, Hoke&Co. weren't even there back when he committed to tOSU.  So I'm sure he heard from RR and clearly preferred tOSU, but enter Hoke (and possibly more importantly interms of recruiting, Mattison) and the message to Bri'Onte changes.  Who can blame him for listening to the new coaches, and who can blame him for liking what he hears?  The status quo changed with the hiring.  I'm not going to say that the imminent NCAA sanctions don't weigh in as a factor, but I honestly wonder how much of Dunn's interest is legit because of the coaches and recruiting pitch, vs. the possible threat to tOSU.  I think that if we can get him on campus, there's a good chance we can get him to flip even before the hammer hits OSU.  Or at least, that's what I'm hoping.

Dunn and the depth chart

I've never heard him mention this, but it seems pretty likely to me that the difference in depth charts at OSU and Michigan will play a roll in his recruitment (not that that issue alone will sway him).  Both have a lot of RBs, but OSU's were much more highly ranked.  The redshirt freshman RB Rod Smith is supposed to be their next star.

Perfect Storm

This could well end up being a perfect storm for our Midwestern recruiting. this is obvioulsy a huge year for Midwest recruiting with a real bumper crop of talent in the region. We are OWNING the state in respect to head to head competition with Sparty.

As for OHIO . . . here is where it gets interesting.

1.  They already have lower scholarships to use in this year of much talent.

2.  RR and staff leave and with them their affinity of recruiting out of the Midwset.

3.  Hoke comes to AA and re-establishes a Midwestern recruiting focus stating that he will  concentrate his efforts in Mich and Ohio.

4.  Enter Tressel-Gate and all the problems associated with it. Many OSU leans may rethink investing their skills into a university primed for NCAA  Armagedon

5.  Due to a multitude of factors the DL and LB position is one of the most needed in AA

6.  The 4-star Mafia of LB's decides early on Mich. 2 from the state of Ohio and 1 from Mich that had an Ohio offer.

7.  As for the DL there is probably no position more rich in talent this year than DL when it comes to the Midwest. Again enter the extreme need of UM at the postion, and not surprisingly UM could forseeably take up to 6 from the likes of Washington, Pittman, Ojemudia, Strobel, Brown, Wormley, McMullen, among others.

With Dunn now visiting this plants the seed of doubt in other OSU leaning players. All we need is several more high profile visits and watch the fire storm begin baby!!!

I am pumped about this.

I am pumped about this.  Snagging Dunn away from OSU would top any of RRs snake-oil machinations. Add the FHH trio coming in this weekend, and this could be an excellent weekend for recruiting.  Please put these three in a room together and drop off a list of current commits entitled "Mega Class".  I think they'll see the writing on the wall.

Jaleel is my favorite DT to be honest just from seeing his combine film. He demolished Jordan Diamond and company. I'm glad he finally got an offer. If other players are ahead of him (Godin, since he's instate, and O'Brien, since he's a boss), so be it. But I think Johnson would be a nice player for Michigan. He's a go getter.

On a side note of Brionte

On a side note of Brionte Dunn and other Ohio recruits do we think at this point the longer OSU goes on wondering what its penalty will be is more beneficial then when the actual penalty comes out?

It all depends.  I personally

It all depends.  I personally want to hear the punishment right away.  For recruiting I'm not sure which situation is better.

On one hand if the recruits hear the punishment or if jt gets fired now, it might sway kids like Dunn in our facor.  On the other hand if it drags out, we can get in on kids that might be waiting for the ruling to come out.

The best thing that could happen

The best thing that could happen for Michigan in terms of "Tatgate" would to have this thing drag along for a while. The unkown is almost always scarier than the known.

Lets say the sanctions come out and Ohio State has a 1 year bowl ban, last season vacated, some scholarships lost for a year or two, and lose a TV game, the recruits can decide whether they negatives outway the positives and some might decide they don't and go to OSU.

But if it just lingers out there and they hear that those might be the sanctions, but then hear also that it could go up to a 2 year bowl ban, losing multiple TV games etc., than the fear of what could be will drive the recruits away from OUS and hopefully towards us.

It would also help if Tressel were to stay around for the next year. The longer he stays, the longer the negative stigma stays around OSU. If he stays, than that might lead some concerned recruits and parents of recruits to think OSU values football over everything else including the well being of their kids, and drive them away. It helps even more if he struggles. Ideally, he stays through the start of the next recrutitng season and puts OSU in a huge hole there. Eventually, I want him gone though, because we just can't beat him.

Overall, lingering=good. I want to here the sanctions as much as everyone else, but the longer it takes, the better.

I am curious what people's

I am curious what people's thoughts are on comparing Dunn with other high school backs? As a NE ohio guy I think Chris Wells.  I see some simalarities, but I think Wells was quicker in and out of his cuts. Dunn's running style, while upright at times, is impressive. They both have good straight line speed and the ability to punish defensive backs. Dunn's competition is much stronger. He is a gifted young man and I hope he has a good visit this weekend and gets any answers to  his questions he may have.

Second question, can anyone remember the last time Michigan got a verbal commit to switch from columbus? I don't know the answer, but I love the possibility.

Question

So this may be pretty well known but I was wondering what constitutes the difference between an unofficial and official vist for recruits.  If you are on an unofficial visit is the school allowed to pay for anything or is that a NCAA violation?  Likewise, what is the extent in expenses that a school can cover on an official visit? Travel? Meals?  Is there a limit to these?  Just curious.

Sanctions

I agree with the post above as far as TAT-Gate dragging on for as long as possible. For the sake of pure curiousity I would love to know just what will befall our rival to South. However, there is nothing worse in a recruits mind than not knowing what all is going to happen with the current situation. The longer the this goes without some closure the better it is with us. Ohio blogger Dwayne Long references this very thing in one of his latest posts.

official visits

All I know is that the NCAA allows only 5 official visits in which the university can foot the bill. Unofficial are limitless as the student and family (not recruiting service like Oregon) are responsible for expenses.
