...Brian's comments:

  • If they bring in Jim/Bo, recruiting will be ok.  Much of class will stay, some of Stanford's class will switch
  • Zettel's PSU choice doesn't logically equate to unease over CC since he could have just waited another week, plus PSU's HC situation is as unsettled or more than Michigan's
  • That said, he doesn't understand the HC decision delay

Perhaps Zettel's unease is over the possibility of RR staying, and not wanting to play in the 3-3-5.

Perhaps he is committing to Penn State to hedge his bets. Perhaps if the change happens, he might flip back to MICH.

/E-speculation.

And I agreed with Brian.  The timing, and nature, of Zettel's decision suggests, on its face, that uncertainty over future coaching had nothing to do with it.  Pro, or con.

Brian said something so simple and so obvious, I wonder why more people don't say it: Anthony Zettel made the same decision a lot of kids have over the years:  They wanted to "go away to college."

Zettel made his decision before anybody knows who Michigan's coach will be.  Before anybody knows what sort of defensive scheme might be rusn at Michigan.  And by the time Zettel is an upperclassman, who the freak knows who PSU's coach will be?  The rather obvious overriding factor is that Zettel wanted to go away to college.  Pure and simple.  He saw something he liked, at State Penn.  God only knows what that might be.  I'll never understand it.  But Zettel didn't ask me.  He just didn't want to go to Michigan, or even Michigan State.

E-gree with what you wrote here as well. There may be a "style of play" component at work here, but also, he might just want, like Madonna, to get the hell out of Michigan.

I grew up in Racine, Wisconsin, and the year I was graduating high school was when the Badgers had a star running back from my high school winning the National Player of the Year award (Brent Moss) and they went to the Rose Bowl. (For what it's worth, this is also John Clay's high school).

Despite that, the last thing I wanted to do was go to Madison. I had to get out of Wisconsin, I just needed a change.

Anthony Zettel

"Over my vacation I came to reality," Zettel said. "Then every day it just grew and grew, so I was 100-percent sure."

"Just a great education there, the family atmosphere that they have and great coaching," Zettel said when asked what set PSU apart. "They teach their players to be good guys and good football players."

“I liked Michigan, I just didn’t feel like the chemistry was there as much as Penn State,” Zettel said.

This decision was mostly about coaching and especially scheme. He has basically said he does not want to play in the 3-3-5. You can't really blame Zettel for choosing PSU.  Michigan's coaching situation is not good right now.  Not only is there questions surrounding our head coach, but there are also questions surrounding pretty much ALL of our defensive coaches and they are the ones Zettel was most concerned about.

"I like the coaches and the chemistry," could just as well be, "I like the breathtaking views of Mt. Nittany," or "I like the fancy uniforms," or "There's a girl in Pennsylvania who's stolen my heart."

The point is, there's nothing specific from Zettel, and nothing implied, that would make anyone suspect that Coach Rodriguez, or Coach Robinson, or 3-3-5 schemes, were what drove Zettel's decision.

Can we nominate Brian for his own four-hour, Sunday morning slot on WTKA?  He has been a guest enough that he has transitioned into someone who now sounds like a radio professional.  Maybe they could try him out on post-football Sundays next season.

The Old Men that call in are hilarious, they comment on weeks old news, that they must have debated with their relatives over Christmas. Sometimes it feels like I am reading a game preview after I know the game result.
