Brian, Seth, John U and Ed Muransky this Monday in Cleveland!

Submitted by mGrowOld on

A quick reminder to anyone in the Northern Ohio area that this coming Monday night, Brian, Seth, John U Bacon and Ed Muransky will be speaking about the CC and how we got JMF Harbaugh (I still can't believe it) at the Winking Lizard off Miles Rd in Bedford (just south of Cleveland).  This event is sponsored by the Alumni Association of Northern Ohio and tickets are $20 for alums and $25 for all others and you can still register here although we are very close to a sellout.  As of now tickets will be available at the door.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with Ed Muransky he has quite a rich history with Michigan during his years in Ann Arbor, 78-81 - same as me!   Ed still holds the "Beef Bowl" record at the Rose Bowl (set with Bubba Paris in 1979), was an All American, played pro ball, had a cameo in "The Big Chill" and has a connection to the 49ers past ownership as well.

To me the highlight of the evening will be when 75-100 maize, khaki & blue wearing Michigan faithful invade a unsuspecting sports bar populated by a bunch of OSU fans hoping to watch the game amongst their Buckeye friends.

That should be interesting as hell.

Muransky also set the all-time "Beef Bowl" record by consuming 8 pounds  of prime rib at Lawry's before the 1979 Rose Bowl. Muransky later recalled: "Bubba Paris and I were two happy freshmen eating together at the Lawry's Beef Bowl event before the 1979 Rose Bowl Game. After we had enjoyed our fourth plate of prime rib, mashed potatoes, corn and Yorkshire pudding, Bubba asked what the record was, and they said 7 cuts. Bubba continued for 3 more cuts, and I continued for four, totally under the Bo Schembechler radar screen. When they delivered the 8th cut to me, the media started to gather around my table, Bo walked by and let me know what he was thinking without ever saying a word. Afterward, a Paris-Muransky night out ended with some pizza.

The next morning in practice, Bo made an example of Bubba and me. We never ran so much in our lives as we did that day. We were in every play of scrimmage and then we ran sprints."[  When the Wolverines returned to Pasadena for the 1981 Rose Bowl, "Bo made it a point to come to the back of the plane and talk to me and Bubba Paris. He wanted to let us know that my record from a couple years earlier would not be in jeopardy because we were going to be sitting with him at the Lawry's Beef Bowl. He said he was going to limit each of us to two cuts of prime rib."

Schembechler had his own take on the story: "I let 'em eat because they were freshmen. They weren't gonna play anyway."

I understand Brian and John U having insight on the coaching search. Did Seth have information regarding the search outside of what he got from his affliaton to Brian and mgoblog?

I can't wait.  The Winking Lizard is only 2 miles from my house. I am looking forward to welcoming the MGoBloggers to the neighborhood.

So, is Ed Muransky attending in place of Thom Darden?  Earlier reports were that Darden would be at the event.  Mursansky was at the last JUB book signing in Cleveland a year or so ago, and he lives out near Youngstown, so it makes sense that he might be available.

I assume we will get the back room, away from the Ohio State horde -- who will be out in great numbers for sure.

Yes on Muransky.  Dardin initially said yes then went completely underground for about a month only to resurface with a "sorry cant make it" email.  Ed was nice enough to pinch hit for him on short notice.

We'll be in the party room separate from the rest of bar to start and have that reserved until 11:00pm.  I think at some point we'll move into the central location up front but not sure when.

Seth, John U. and Muransky, The Party Room is involved, it might be worth the 5-hour drive for me---I have always thought The Party Room to be one of the most entertaining MGoBloggers ever, even 3 years of so after he/she was permanantly exiled to Bolivia.

sweethearts (euphemism?).  her name was julie, very cool gal, a cutie, and the exact physical opposite of ed.   ed brought another future great to the house during his recruiting visit - jumbo jon elliot.  back in the day there weren't that many 6' 7" dudes playing ball and they were both quite good at it.

It would be great to meet some folks who were there the same years I was (1977-1981), including Big Ed.  I remember watching him and Bubba P during my undergrad years and the rest of what was one of our best O-lines of all time.  Should be a fun evening.

I remember back in the early 80's in San Diego, some Ohio State people at the company I worked at invited a bunch of us U-M people to a "joint" Michigan-OSU game watching party at a local sports bar type place.  (This was back when there wasn't any cable TV packages where you could watch the game at home.  So it was satellite TV or nothing)  I think Steve Smith was Michigan's QB at the time and Michigan won the game.  Since the game started at 12:00 or so EST, by the time the game ended on the West Coast it was lunchtime.  So, the arrangement was everyone would go to this dining room to have lunch.  BUT, apparently, the OSU fans who greatly outnumbered us and poor losers that they are, didn't want to have lunch with us Michigan fans.  So, after some deal-brokering with the people who invited us, we were seated somewhere at a "safe distance" from the Ohio contingent where we could celebrate our win without annoying them too much.  In the situation from the OP, I doubt it will be this prickly.

Yeah back when I was younger and in the bar going days I used to always go out to watch The Game. This is around the end of the Cooper era where it was all M all the time. After a few close instances of starting fights and whatnot I decided it best to watch the game at home. That Winking Lizard could then very ugly quickly if Oregon gets up early. Good luck to all who attend. I'd consider it but I work at 3am so it's hard to go out during the week anymore.
I'm an old 35.

while we're at, please answer those two questions posed earlier:  1.  why the big deal about 'the' osu, and   2.  since you guys call your stadium 'ohio', you guys form 'ohio' with your band and do the letters like the village people as 'ohio',  why do some of you get your panites in a bunch when people call you guys 'ohio'?
