Brian Kelly Wants ND To Keep Scheduling Michigan

Submitted by Cold War on

Michigan and Notre Dame are contracted to play just once more in the foreseeable future, but many -- including Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly -- want to see the series continue in some form.

"We would like to play Michigan and Michigan State again," Kelly said at a Notre Dame golf event in Olympia Fields, Ill.

Notre Dame is scheduled to host Michigan once more, on Sept. 6.

Michigan State, which had played the Irish every year since 1997, is off the schedule until the rivalry briefly resumes in 2016 and '17

Unfortunately I feel like Texas has a much better program than we do at this point. Sure we have both really struggled on the field the last few years, however Texas has just hired a competent coach in Strong (something we are lacking) and are in a state loaded with talent. I have no doubt that Texas will once again return to the elite of college football. While sadly, I very much doubt we can ever get back to that point.

I think you're getting negged for your last sentence. Which is unfortunate- it's your opinion, after all. For what it's worth, I agree with everything you said up until that last sentence wholeheartedly. Texas has a hell of a lot more natural advantages in today's CFB landscape than Michigan does.

I assumed I would get negged as I am clearly very pessimistic (which I don't feel is all that unreasonable at this point) about Michigan football. But gun to my head, I don't think we win a national championship in the next 50 years, or even contend for the B1G more than once or twice a decade. We've seen an enormous downward trend the last few years, which will cause major ramifications. I honestly feel like we go 7-6 again at best this upcoming year leading to Hoke being fired. That plus RR being let go only after 3 will make it extremely tough to hire a competent coach as no one wants to go where they have a very limited time frame to improve the quality of their team. Without a quality coach, recruiting suffers and then whoever we do hire to replace Hoke is then fired and then the cycle repeats itself. As a U of M alum, I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I see us becoming the University of Washington, a great team and program a long time ago, but a middle/bottom feeder for years to come.

Part of me would like to see that, too.  Another part of me would like to see the entire B1G tell ND to FOAD--for all sports.  Let their non-revenue sports enjoy all those bus trips to VA, NC, SC, FL, etc.  Petty?  Yeah, probably.  But it was their decision.

If you're ND and you look at Michigan's results outside of the game with you recently, you probably don't view their success in the rivalry as sustainable unless they get a lot better as a program.

"Notre Dame might be discussing the possibility of rekindling the Michigan series, but no overtures have been made to the Wolverines, Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon told ESPN.com via email Thursday."

OK, if Swofford will let us, we can pretend to be Wake Forest but a tougher matchup in alternating years, right? If nothing else, they will still have Purdue until Purdue becomes a prblematic game, if I am reading this correctly.

DB flat out said that they are ducking Michigan in Basketball.

Understandable. They'd have no chance.

ND couldn't even beat Indiana State at HOME.

I say we impose an embargo against them in ALL sports. Unless it's an NCAA Tournament, Michigan should not be playing them in anything.

I get that we all want to call them turds and tell them to sit and spin, but add a fan who wants to watch interesting, fun football games, I hope BK is onto something and this is a possibility. I have good memories from the Big House and South Bend enjoying great games. If it's worth it to you to puff up and talk about how they are such cowards and then play Appalachian State I guess that's your prerogative. I hope ND is on future schedules.

I don't want it renewed. ND has long given us a reason to produce a shitty non-conference schedule most years because we already have a "high-profile" game, which is now rooted in the familiarity of the names involved more than it being a legitimately exciting match-up.

Having ND off the schedule makes Michigan go and get appealing opponents that will provide actual variety.

doesn't preclude Michigan from scheduling other "high-profile" games.  From 1978 through 2002 Michigan scheduled ND 19 times with 13 of those seasons having at least one, usually two, other very credible to high profile teams.  It wasn't really until 2003 that Michigan would schedule ND and two patsies.  This happens to coincide with the BCS era which favored wins over the substance of the schedule.  Hopefully the committee will look at the intent of the schedule as well as the result of the season opponents.

For instance, if Team A schedules a perennial bottom feeder who happens to have a great year, should a win over them carry more weight than Team B beating a mid to upper tier team having a bad season?  In 1997 all three of Michigans OOC opponents; Colorado, Baylor, and ND were actually having down years compared to when they were scheduled (Both CU and Baylor ended up having losing seasons).  It was said that Michigan had a championship schedule lined up for 1997 so when both ND and CU cratered Michigan received the benefit of the doubt for scheduling them.

pieces of s#it. Yet, they know with the nd media bias and a weaker schedule (now that msu is a legit squad) they have a much better chance of making and then quickly getting tossed from the playoffs.

This is not happening. We are done with N d for the foreseeable future. ND would not play us on the road the same year they play USC on the road, which means we would have to play them on the road the same years we go to OSU and MSU. They could change that if they dropped MSU. However, our out of conference schedule is already quite full for the next ten years, especially with the big ten moving to 9 games. We won't see ND for at least a decade and probably quite a bit longer.

Sure he does. The way ND has been recruiting of late they should be more than willing to take on a still on the rebound Michigan program. ND's powers that be were very short sided when they made the decision to hand over that letter to Dave Brandon...

He definitely doesn't want to face us with Harbaugh. We own them lately too.

We can play them in the B1G championship game after the join the conference.  Of course, they will only join if their division includes:

Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Rutgers

I love rivalries, but no school has more rivals than Michigan, and to be brutally honest, that many rivalry games can drain a program. OSU, MSU, ND, Wisky, Penn State, even Minnesota (well, only for the true old timers) can all be considered rivals. Let's simplify things, and give ourselves a better chance for success.

Heck, they walked away from the rivalry -- with us in the lead. Please, let's leave it at that.

Fxck that Tomato Face and ND! Although I will miss the series and a great rivalry between two storied programs, I am damn glad to see new blood like Arkansas & VaTech on the schedule.

I used to love that game.  It used to be one of the biggest days on the calendar each year.  I was upset when they cancelled it.

However, so mch time later, I am pretty much over them.  Let's get some other teams on the schedule and put them in the rear view mirror.
