Brian Cole and David Reese

Submitted by TheReal_GR3 on

For those that don't know Brian Cole transferred from East Mississippi to Mississippi State this spring.

Cole is playing safety for MSST. Cole just returned an interception 54 yards for a touchdown in their spring. He has had a fantastic game so far. He is fighting for a starting job, one I expect him to get.

Another Michigan connection... Ron English is his position coach.

Former Michigan commit David Reese is entering his second season at Florida. He didn't play in the spring game due to a wrist injurt but he is expected to be the starting middle linebacker next season.

Just some notes I wanted to pass on.

EDIT: Sorry for the typo.

...and now I'll have to break open the cache of Pinky & The Brain episodes / sketches from "Animaniacs".

I still like the one where Brain invented steam-powered trousers for the 1939 World's Fair, which prompted Pinky to say:

"Brilliant, Brain! You can press your pants while you wear them!"

"Sartorial splendor is not one of my main objectives, Pinky."

What is this comment based on?  Not one of us have seen Metellus play safety, we have no idea of his cover skills.

You would rather have a guy who was a solid starter for years over an underclassman unknown?  So would everybody.  But that says nothing about his cover skills.

Not really sure what the hell you're saying. What I'm saying is every report on Metellus is that he is a good hitter who loves contact and physical play. That typically means coverage is a work in progress.

But did you even read my post? Obviously everyone would love Wilson in our secondary this year. I said I would like to see someone of his ilk ("Wilson type safety") back there. Maybe they arent the biggest hitter but they handle their coverage and deep responsibilities consistently.

I'm not doubting anyone, I just think Brian Cole is a really good player and would be the best safety on the team. Not everything needs to be interpreted as a slight.

Cole has a lot of ability, but when he was just a freshman and was introducing himself at parties as "I'm Brian Cole the third, I play football" I was already slightly concerned.

Over McCray?  Your unrelenting desire to be contrarian has now conquered your reasoned analysis my friend.

And if you meant over Bush, very doubtful. The coaches had every opportunity to take Reese and greatly preferred Bush, even to the point of turning Reese away with Bush uncommitted.

That being said, I'd love to have him on our roster.

about losing him. He committed to play FB with a shot at playing LB. Later he said he was unwilling to play FB. Then he insisted on being allowed to enroll early even though Harbaugh told him he was holding the available spots for other recruits, primarily on offense where we needed immediate help.

If you were recruiting him, what would you have done differently? No fair using superpowers to know which recruits won't pan out. If you knew that, you wouldn't recruit them in the first place.

and you'd tell him sorry, but you can't EE anymore because this other commit decided he wants your spot now? Butt was the only experienced TE on the roster and not a sure bet to return.

I think when your commits start making demands any coach is prepared to cut them loose. That was the second one from Reese. Maybe he really did just want to go somewhere else. He flipped from Louisville right after getting his offer. It looked like he had second thoughts when he started getting more interest from other schools.

We had Butt, Wheatley, Bunting already. Then we added McKeon, Assiasi, Eubanks and moved Gentry to TE. We wound up with 7 TE's. I know timing of these pledges plays a role but I'm confident McKeon would have waited till summer/fall to join the team to keep a needed position player I. The fold. I don't think McKeon has played at all since his arrival and we all know how seriously thin we were at LB last year. I know Reese's family and they confirmed that he was All Blue. He just wanted to get in early, learn the system and compete for a spot. Don't paint the young man as a flip flopping diva because he wanted to start early and there were other schools jockeying for his services. I trust that Harb knows best and it's his team. Sometimes we loyalist blame the recruit because things didn't work out. Unfortunately there's no blame for anybody here. We will probably see Reese in the season opener and I hope to see McKeon play this season. I just hope that Harb made the right choice and both players have great careers but McKeon has a much better career for Michigan. Go Blue

Your claim that McKeon hasn't played is incorrect. He played in 4 games last season as a true freshman. He even caught two passes in the game vs Hawaii. A simple Google search would have clarified that for you.

I also don't blame Reese for going to Florida. If early enrollment and a guaranteed focus on linebacker were requirements for his services then Florida was obviously the better fit. It's a bit rich to say the kid was "All Blue" though, when he turned down a full scholarship offer for another school. That's not "All Blue" where I come from.

I was really excited about him coming out of HS.  He could play a lot of positions that are up for grabs right now...nickel/safety/viper/return.

ive said that several times myself, cole would really help this teams depth as hes obviously a gifted, versatile athlete.  and itd be nice to have another 2015 prospect on roster making an impact, help further offset some of the struggles of that transition class

I guess I don't know how much of a problem it was and how bad his attitude was. But I strongly feel that (1) weed is not a big deal and (2) freshmen can and will change much easier than upperclassmen. So again I don't know the situation but unless he had a completely toxic attitude I think even multiple weed violations deserves a suspension and teaching moment, not ending a career at Michigan.

I wouldn't say that weed isn't a big deal.  Most people can smoke a little weed now and then just as most people are social drinkers.  People with depression or other issues use weed and other substances to self medicate.  I had a buddy who took 9 years to finish undergrad at three different schools.  Most of his issues were depression masked by smoking massive amounts of weed. Weed can be a big deal for some people.

Also,  you don't want your team culture to be a pot smoking culture.  Remember the rumors of the App State loss being due to players being high?  I don't believe the rumors, but you want your players lifting weights, hitting the books and studying film instead of tokin' up and eating cheetos until 3AM.

I hope Cole has got his act together and that he has a lot of success.

I think it's more accurate to say that weed isn't necessarily a big deal. I know guys like your friend who smoke so much that it ruins their ability to be productive. And I have other friends who are successful corporate lawyers and businesspeople who smoke a little almost every night without any negative effects.

And I think the guy you're replying to recognizes this, too. If a guy fails a drug test, but always shows up on time and does what he's supposed to do, it shouldn't be a problem. But if a guy fails a drug test, and his drug use is causing other behavioral or performance problems, then obviously it's an issue.

Also, posting shit from Ace Williams/ChatSports as evidence for anything is frowned upon. The guy frequently makes stuff up with zero evidence behind it. I've heard the rumors as well, but never heard anything concrete to back them up.

from a public health program misspell his department as pubic health on the front slide of his power point. More snickers than what a kid would get on Halloween...
