Breaking News: Dee Hart Drops Auburn

Submitted by MGoShoe on

According to Chris Hays at the Orlando Sentinel:

And then there were two. Apologies for the cliche, but Dr. Phillips star Dee Hart has cut his list of prospective colleges to two, saying Saturday at the ESPN RISE Champion Gridiron Kings event in Orlando that he has dropped Auburn and now it's between Michigan and Alabama. Hart cited Auburn's interest in a pair of other running backs for his reasoning.

He said he hopes to make his decision sometime in September or October.

Prediction: The UConn game will be the clinching event.  Win, and he commits.

UConn is important to win. Another thing that could help is that, given the comments Saban made about agents, some high-profile news agency publishes a well-circulated piece about Saban's various schmucky activity as a head coach. That would be a large reason to reconsider having the Tide on the list even if you think they're going to be a better team in 2011.

Hate to play Debbie Downer here, but both Alabama and Michigan have, or had, face time with the NCAA investigators. I'm pretty sure it's a wash (textbooks v. practice time), but i don't think Michigan gets the moral high ground anymore.

Given what the NCAA found in Michigan's case, Michigan hasn't lost any "moral high ground."  Now, I don't need to badmouth Alabama in this context, and I won't.  Let's leave them out of this.

What, about anything done in Michigan's program loses any sense of "morality"?  Michigan's "immorality" in the NCAA investigation pretty much compares with any one of the thousands of drivers now speeding at about 78 miles per hour on I-94.

But don't take it from me.  Let's let wordsmithing professional Jonathan Chait take it from here:

Let me return to an analogy I suggested the other day. Imagine I accused Free Press editor Paul Anger of massive, systematic tax fraud. In response, he invited the IRS in for a top-to-bottom audit, and discovered that he had mistakenly expensed several meals that he shouldn't have, and offers to pay back double what he owed. Anger's report notes that, despite the mistakes, he is not in fact a massive tax cheat. Now I reply by insisting that the very fact that he denies being a massive tax cheat shows that he lacks remorse and may well cheat on his taxes again.

The athletic department turns out to be guilty of incompetence. This isn't exactly something to be proud of, and it needs to be cleaned up. But it has displayed transparency, willingness to investigate criticism of its practices, and commitment to correct its errors. That's more than the Free Press can say.

Here's another -1 for you.

I tried to make it clear; it is relevant in the case of Dee Hart, because apparently Dee thought it somewhat important.  He mentioned it to Tom VH.  It was pretty clearly important to Dee's mom, too, from her prior statements.

I didn't bring up the NCAA investigation and the supposed "loss of the moral high ground."  Debbie Downer did.  I responded.  Pretty well, methinks.  And if you think that anybody should ever get away with talking about Michigan's supposed NCAA malfeasances without mentioning the hateful reporting of the Free Press, then you and I have very different ideas about messaging and we should just agree to disagree.

I really don't mind some of you complaining about my campaign against the Free Press.  I actually post in remarkably few MGoBlog threads.  When I do, I try to keep it relevant, or at least funny.

Some think that there might be too much insularity at MGoBlog.  It is an interesting notion.  Obviously, the Drew Sharps of the world dismiss MGoBlog as being a bunch of Wolverine fanboys.  My thought is that if there is any insularity at MGoBlog (and I really don't think there is much), it is that the MGoBlog demographic, of youngish, smart, web-savvy collegians is insulated from that great mass of Michiganians and others who really do get almost all of their news from the Detroit newspapers and the local broadcast tv stations.  As far as those many of those people are concerned, they have a hard time understanding why Rich Rodriguez wasn't fired a year ago.  Seriously.  I find that to be a pretty disturbing state of affairs.  And one worth trying to change.

"Hart cited Auburn's interest in a pair of other running backs for his reasoning."

Hart should cite Alabama's interest in a Heisman Trophy winning running back.

His reasoning gives me more reason to believe that Justice Hayes will be picking ND (which is fine with me).  If he thought we were going after him pretty hard, it would probably do the same thing to our chances.

soley off the comments he made in Orlando it appears that what Justice Hayes does and winning will have some bearing on Dee Harts decision.  Also just speculation on my part he may be waiting for the actual results from Michigans' NCAA hearings and the potential fallout from the new allegations at Alabama.  Just go Blue DH

issue(s) used to be an issue, for Demetrius' mom.  And that's no longer the case.  And what it probably took for Mrs. Hart to get down with Michigan on this issue was nothing more than a simple, clear, logical, reasonable, honest explanation of what happened and what is really happening at Michigan, apart from the reports of our favorite local newspaper.

Dee Hart said as much, himself:

TOM VH: How was the visit?

DEMETRIUS: It went real well. I've been up there plenty of times now, and every time I go up there I just like it that much more. The changes they're making, and the things they're going are really good. I really liked it. I was more so happy because Nick (Patti) got to see everything up there. You hear all the negativity that goes on, and some of it might be true, but a lot of it isn't. A lot of it is just the media throwing salt on it, so it was good to see that.

has nothing to do with dee hart's decision. that should've been clear to people when RR was at lunch with nick patti and dee hart whilst hayes was at schembechler hall. dee hart is the number one option at RB and he would be even if hayes wanted to commit

The fact that the NCAA is sniffing around Bama makes me even more optimistic on this one. Sabes won't be able to rely on a guy in a trenchcoat holding a briefcase full of cash to tempt this guy. Can't wait to see us add a 'Slaton' to the potential 'White' we have at QB.

Good pun, but I think alot of people underrate Hart's size.  After the recent 7 on 7, people are saying he's up to about 200 lbs.  Going into this season, Devine is listed at 5'8" 180.  At this point, Hart is probably getting closer to a Mike Hart/Ray Rice/Maurice Jones-Drew, size wise at least, than either Devine or even Slaton, who was 5'10" 195 lbs when he came out.

This has nothing to do with D Hart, but when I see some of you fawn and fixate over 15, 16 and 17 year old kids, I sometimes hope they choose a school other than Michigan. I know this makes me a bad person, but I can't help it.
