Braylon guarantees win vs UConn on Twitter

Submitted by briangoblue on

Michigan will not lose to Uconn this Saturday #TheBeard guarantees it! We getting back to Michigan football this season tell em #1 said that

Good to see Braylon thinking positively on game week and supporting the team rather than unintentionally stirring up some negative controversy. Wanted to share it because it fired me up and I thought those still peeved at him for "Lloyd Carr's Michigan" and other such overblown fiascos could welcome him back like a prodigal son. Now if only we could find somebody to wear that #1...

Hard not to welcome him "back" since he will always be a Michigan Man.  But I will never forget the comments he and others have made publicly to criticise RR and the program.  If he's looking to join the RR bandwagon I think that time has passed.

Still, glad to see him supporting the team.  Just don't expect me to be all happy that he's going to play the "I told you so" card after this season.

Braylon, no.  Since he is a player and is more than a "fan".  But the Average Joe yelling "FIAH RODGREEGIZ!" every 2 minutes last year during the IU game, and HE comes back and praises RR -- he's a bandwagon fan.  And sadly, that's true with any big time program across the nation.

Why is this person getting negged?  That post seems pretty balanced to me.

Braylon was an awesome player at UMich and he's had some good moments as an alum/ambassador, but he's had some bad ones, too.

A low-maintenance guy (that is, someone roughly 178 degrees from Braylon) would have addressed the #1 jersey issue quietly and privately with Rodriguez.  He'd also generally refrain from popping off before thinking.  (Never would have guessed this for the offspring of Stanley Edwards... never.)

He's not exactly Mike Boren, but his little #1 issue has been multiplied by the bleating mass of mediocre sportswriters and has hurt the program at least a little bit.

I gave him a -1 because any FAN who thinks they can judge a former PLAYER who has done as much for the football program as Braylon has is a pompous ass. He needs to come down to earch and apprecaite his place in the world of Michigan Football.

And, anyone who says something like "If he's looking to join the RR bandwagon I think that time has passed" does not understand the depth and breadth that Michigan Football carries. He does not understand that the UM program is bigger than RR - Braylon might have said some things about RR, but that does not mean he is not a fan of UM Football and rightfully believe we will get back to "Michigan Football" this year. This is not about RR's bandwagon. It is about MIchigan Football. So, not only is the poster pompous, he is close-minded.

Publicly criticizing one guy for making public criticisms about another guy is hypocritical.  Plus, I love Braylon, and he can come to the light whenever he wants.

"I'm a better fan than you b/c I don't criticize a coach that has a terrible record" is pretty dumb.  I mean fair criticism is fair criticism, and bragging about how good of a fan you are (which is basically what this guy is doing) is idiotic.  Its good for the program to have as many fans as possible, regardless of if they're front runners.  Trying to keep the "I have always loved RR club" as an exclusive entity so you can talk about how great of a fan you are on a message board is counter productive for the program, and selfish.  I say get as many people on board as possible whenever you can.  Don't turn fans away.

Also, the other reason his post is poor, is because any notion that people are jumping on a bandwagon now b/c they "know" that Michigan will have a great season is lunacy. We're coming off the two worst seasons in 100 years. Calling someone a bandwagon fan b/c they get on board now is exactly the opposite of a bandwagon fan.

I wish Braylon would for once keep his mouth shut.

It will be funny to see the Jets fall on their face this year while Henne and Brady both have their way with them.

Is he coming back to play CB?  Or maybe instead of playing for the Jets, he knows Darrelle Revis is going to be playing for us.

secretly want the #1 to be retired, or what? He hijacked the number with his donation and now apparently nobody is a special enough snowflake to wear it, going on 3 years now.  Just give somebody the frickin' number, man. I know that RR is annoyed by this as well.

AND, and...when somebody does FINALLY get the #1 there will be SO much pressure on that kid to perform it will be counterproductive!

Okay, that's off my chest. Sorry.

wear it... in 2004!  If you don't think Super Mario earned the #1 based on his heroics in 2005 and 2006 then you suffer from the same problem as BrayBray.

Look, there were a bunch of decent or good WRs between AC and BE who wore #1.  The longer the drought goes the more ridiculous this whole thing becomes, and the enormous pressure that gets put on the next poor 19 or 20 year old kid who wears the "Almighty #1" will be STUPID.

By the way: RR considers the #1 RETIRED. Rich is a "The TEAM, The TEAM, The TEAM" guy.  Once Braylon announced that the bearer of #1 is a super special player above all others, Rich was like :"Oh yeah? KEEP IT THEN!"

Because if you think Rich is going to call up Braylon Edwards and ask "Mother, may I?" before handing out the #1 jersey ever again you are sadly mistaken.  AND if you think RR is going to let some former player decide who gets assigned the numbers for HIS players you are also very mistaken.

That whole fiasco in 2008 seriously pissed off Rich.  And I agree with him.  The whole thing has become an overinflated farce.

So I take it you are a personal friend of RR? It seems you know a lot of what he thinks. Care to share any other tidbits? What does he really think of Carr? What about Bo? Or more broadly, how does he feel about global warming? Is he a legs or breast man?

That's good.  Geez man, don't shoot the messenger.

Let's just say I know something about this one, okay?

And hey, time will prove the accuracy of my sources.  I'll tell you this: Some serious fence-mending by Braylon will need to occur before anyone wears that thing again.

blueblueblue

Ok, I take it you have some special insight.

But if what you say is the case, if RR denies WRs the privilege, and denies all the fans the tradition, of seeing the #1 in action over a spat with Braylon, that seems petty, juvenile, and poor management to me. I just lost some respect in terms of RR's maturity and management abiltiy.

caup

Do you honestly think Bo would have reacted any differently? C'mon.  Rich needs to convey that this is HIS team, not BrayBray's.

Bo would've reacted the exact same way.  There is nothing juvenile about it.

Listen, Rich doesn't spend a minute of time worrying about this.  He just assumes the jersey is retired until the primadonna in NY decides he wants to stop being a douche.

blueblueblue

August 31st, 2010 at 10:16 AM ^

I am pretty sure Bo would not have let a petty squabble between himself and a former player get in the way of what was best for the current and future teams. It's not about how much time RR spends worrying; which just exemplifies the issue -  again the focus is on RR and his relationship with Braylon, not on the current and future teams, as well as fans.

Bo had Anthony Carter in the #1.

We haven't had a receiver in the Anthony Carter category the last couple of years.  Who really cares if anyone gets the #1 this year?  It is special.  Maybe someone earns it; maybe not.

caup

August 31st, 2010 at 10:26 AM ^

Greg McMurtry and Derrick Alexander.  Very good WRs, on par with Mario or Arrington or Breaston.

The #1 has never been dormant for 6 years.  Never.  Enough already.  Every year it goes unworn the pressure on that next kid gets bigger.  That's a NEGATIVE thing.

Hold on a sec....

You're complaining that Braylon is interfering with RichRod's team, and then you cite three of Lloyd Carr's players in support of your argument?  I'm hoping you aren't an attorney.

In any event, who cares that no one has gotten the jersey?  A special kid will earn it and excel with whatever pressure comes with it.  That sad thing is that some are ripping a great Wolverine under the guise of supporting those who have put in less time in A2.

"Every year it goes unworn the pressure on that next kid gets bigger.  That's a NEGATIVE thing."

I am really starting to have a hard time understanding your logic - the longer RR holds out, the more pressure it builds on for whichever kid wears it. Ok - brushing aside whether we have actually had a WR worthy on and off the field of wearing the #1, and brushing aside whether it is true that it builds more pressure, and brushing aside whether that a good or bad thing, according to you it, its absence is a negative. But the issue is that it is a negative that only RR is perpetuating, in a petty way, due to his spat with Braylon. It's like a partent who withholds a grand parent's present from a child to spite that grand parent. Its so petty that I am having a hard time believing the veracity of your statements.

I think you're buying Braylon's mythology of the #1 Jersey a bit too much. Nobody talked about "who would wear #1", until Braylon's desire for it was used by Carr as a motivational ploy. It was, like any other number, just a jersey. Yes, AC and McMurtry and Alexander amd Terrell wore it. But guys like Howard, Toomer, Hayes, Walker, Avant, Manningham, Clancy, Streets and Kolesar never did. Terrell got it as a true freshman - he didn't have to prove a thing, and nobody commented a peep when he got it. Tyrone Butterfield wore it.

Edwards has gone back and given the jersey something in retrospect that it never had at the time - probably as a testament to his own ego.

It had never been "dormant" for 6 years likely because before Braylon nobody thought about the damn thing - it was just turned over to another WR when the guy wearing it left.

Whether caup has inside knowledge or not doesn't really matter, does it?  I think we can all agree that no one on the current roster should be wearing the #1, either because of The Team The Team The Team or because on- and/or off-field performance hasn't warranted it.  If Stonum (or Roundtree, or Odoms, or someone else) has a breakout year, and The Team succeeds on the field, and RichRod still doesn't hand out the #1, then we can argue about whether he's (a) ruining a Michigan tradition or (b) a true disciple of Bo.

I think the best result would be Stonum going for over 1500 all-purpose yards, the team winning 9 games and going bowling in January, and The Team (perhaps during the Senior Class pre-camp dinner at Rich's house that I hope becomes a new and long-lasting tradition) requesting that the #1 be given out.  It would also be nice if Braylon kept his mouth shut on the subject, but that's probably too much to ask.
