Braxton Miller "just fine" after leaving Purdue game, per 11 Warriors

Submitted by bjk on

"Full statement from Ohio State," per post at 11 Warriors:

Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller left the game against Purdue late in the third quarter. He was taken to the Wexner Medical Center, on the campus of The Ohio State University, because of concerns of a possible concussion. He was examined – head, shoulders and neck – and he has been cleared. He is symptom free of all ailments and he is doing fine. He is in the process of being released from the hospital.

Good for him. Potential head injuries are scary.

Perhaps he was just crying because they were on the verge of losing to Purdue for the 3rd time in 5 years?

pretty happy with Kenny Guiton's performance as back-up. Apropos which, where have we heard this before?:
That's fantastic news! Unfortunately we have to worry about this kind of thing for 2 more years because he's a run first QB.

I have a hard time believing this, players get concussions all the time and I rarely see them forced to leave the stadium on a stretcher.  At minimum there must have been some other syptoms at the time.

I can't believe that he is alright with what I saw.  It would be unfortunate if he is put at risk in a season that holds no postseason aspirations, but it is Columbus.....

Although I would still hope that they'd let him take it easy for at least next week as that looked really bad initially, it is good to hear that the news from the examination is positive. He looked as if his breathing was pretty labored (on top of the obvious pain) while he was coming off the field, which is something you never want to see.

Ohio State's treatment of Braxton Miller was exemplary.  If there is a coaching staff that we should compare/contrast, it is Michigan State.

The OSU staff sent Miller to the freakin' emergency department at the university medical center!  The Spartans sent Gholston back on the field.

What business do we have griping about the treatment of Miller?

But there are 5 other posters above you who can make a judgment without the use of any of the diagnostic equipment at the university medical center or access to the patient in question.  We could save a lot of money in national health care cost if we could just harness the diagnostic power of the mgoboard instead of focusing on expensive machines and medical training.

I am super curious as to what this injury was... It was a hard fall at full speed, but he did not seem to lose conciousness, at least from what I saw (he moved his arm after hitting, and most guys who lose conciousness like that seem to have muscle lock).  My initial guess was a hip injury, or more likely a lower back vertebrae issue.  Either would be terrible for a player with his talent, rival or not.

Anyway, I wish him the best.  I will never hope a player any physical harm, but I sure as hell hope we kick his buckeye ass on the field.

Looked like it was just a stinger. His head didnt take the brunt of the blow. His shoulder got forced into his head/neck and compressed the nerves. I landed the same way in a game and I reacted pretty much the same way Miller did but was fine after a couple hours.

When I saw the replay I thought it was going to be a separated shoulder or maybe a broken collar bone.

I like Braxton Miller ... he seems a good, hardworking kid who plays a good game.  The sport is better because of young men like that.

That said ... I certainly hope Michigan beats them soundly this November! :-)

looking at the same video clip? What I saw at about 0:07 his head (temple/side of his helmet) is ragdolled to the turf. I realize nexturf is pretty soft compared to the old days of green concrete astroturf...but apparently the point being missed in 'concussion' is brain bruising and neurological deficit.

The mark of a concussion is rapid change of direction. At the rate his head accelerated to the turf, and from what i could see in the video, his helmet made direct impact with the turf at a point where the skull is it's thinnest. His head and brain-ish thing inside...were accelerating to the turf, then suddenly stopped. EVEN if his neck/shoulders whatever took most of the impact it's the sudden change of direction that would cause the problem anyway.

I just sat in on a concussion piece at UM last week. Amazing research they are doing and I'll be astounded to find out he's 'fine'. He was out cold for a few moments if you look at the video. His body posture and twitching/lack of any controlled movement is pretty scary. I honestly believe they are trying to either downplay the situation or blow it off because they need him to compete.

From what I could tell, taking four men to guide you to a stretcher is not 'fine'. It wasn't even a look or appearance of pain or discomfort, it was a 'drunken' gate or stagger without physical control of what his brain was telling his body. Sorry, I completely disagree with this thought of him being fine.

To be fair, those could also be caused by an overwhelming amount of pain. I don't see Meyer as a play through a concussion type of coach, but I guess we'll see.

Probably just got the wind knocked out of his skull and brain neurons. Should be fine.

All seriousness though, hope he's ok. From what I saw, he did not look "just fine" and I hope they go easy on him in practice.

I really do wish him the best and hope he is completely cleared (and completely healthy) to play as soon as possible.  That sure was a tough hit and I am glad they took all the precautions by taking him to the hospital.  I hope he is 100% by Nov 24.  I want to have a good battle down in Colombus!

speculation, but the play in real time looked like he was out cold on the field.  It seemed like concussion-like symptoms.  What do I know I don't even playa doctor on TV.

For what it's worth, I hope the kid is OK.  He's a great talent and having watched Denard for the last three years, every time he gets hit or comes out of a game, my heart sinks.

If Miller is truly "fine" after all that I am impressed.

On a side note, did anyone see Gholston wandering aimlessly on the field today.  He looked punch drunk.  I think he's still having concussion symptoms and the sparty staff is ignoring.  He didn't play like himself today.

Want to see a classic game in the 'shoe on November 24. Side note: Denard will be the 2nd player to get a standing O at Ohio Stadium. It is his destiny.

Good to hear that he's not hurt.  But my concern is if he takes a couple more hard tackles like that, it may lead to something worse.  Just his actions and movements afterwards looked like the results of a concussion.  And as fans of UM, we know first hand that coaches don't divulge how serious some injuries are.  Hoke admitting last year after the Nebraska game that Denard had, had a staph infection is prime example.  So it maybe reported that Braxton is "just fine", but it may not be the entire truth.

He may be symptome free, but that doesn't mean there aren't any effects that result from this injury. Head injuries, moreso brain injuries, are still very difficult to diagnose. Furthermore, projecting effects of these injuries over time is almost impossible on a case by case basis. We really shouldn't speculate in either case, but we should be quite worried about his health after that injury
