Brandon Peters to "Start" Spring Game on Maize Against Speight/Blue

Submitted by reshp1 on

Per Eddie McDoom, Brandon Peters will be suiting up for Maize and O'Korn will be on Blue backing up Speight. That likely means Peters will be getting a lot of reps with the 1's on Maize (as far as that exists in a split squad format). If you're willing to read the tea leaves a bit, that also seems to suggest Peters has passed O'Korn on the depth chart.

"On Tuesday, sophomore receiver Eddie McDoom (who will play on the Blue team) told reporters that O'Korn -- Michigan's backup last year -- will play on the Blue team with Speight.

Which means Peters -- the first quarterback Harbaugh fully recruited to Michigan and a player with plenty of physical tools -- will get the start for the Maize squad on the opposite side.

"BP on the (Maize) side is really great," McDoom said Tuesday. "It's good to have good quarterbacks all around."

Wellllll... technically all three were game jerseys. Michigan used game jerseys from the previous year(s) for practice during most of the Carr years and into Rich Rod's first spring.

The unique practice jerseys started with adidas.

But the original reply post was made in jest.

on Saturday, now that he's been in the program for a full year. Still think this kid could really surprise and maybe see some playing time this year.  Competition will make everyone better!

Gonna be pulling for Maize this year per the rotation, but I hope Speight sticks it to the doubters.

Peters looks better on Saturday, creating an obnoxious divide from now until September that ends up being completely unfounded because Speight was always #1 for the staff.

He's also a coach that has obvious starters sit out the spring game.  Reference last year - Peppers, Lewis, Smith...  Several others sat out it out, too.  If Speight is the clear #1, he'll sit out most, if not all, of the game.

If this is just a way to get Speight and O'Korn playing against each other, as speculated in this thread... I'm still cool with it, because we all want to see Peters in action.

But I think the OP is correct, Peters is nosing ahead for the backup role. I feel kinda bad for O'Korn, who put in a couple of years and seemed like the next starter, but that's the way it goes.

I don't feel bad for JO'K at all. He's on full scholarship, receiving a top notch education at one of the finest institutions in the nation, and still has a role on a prestigious and successful football program. He's also been given numerous opportunities to step into a starting role but just doesn't quite have that ability here.

Right the coaches did the drafting. Presumably Peters went off the board for the Maize before Blue selected both Speight and O'Korn, meaning Peters was higher on the coaches' boards than O'Korn. Now, that could be earlier by one pick, or several rounds, hence it's just one indication and not gospel, but it does seem to suggest Peters is passing O'Korn for the back up spot. Of course, lots of time left until the opener.

I wonder how much of the Speight is the only possible #1 talk is from the "insiders" that post here.

I agree with the notion that if Speight plays just a series or two he probably does have it locked down.

My only prediction is that there will be a few totally unwarranted meltdowns over a spring game which is specifically designed to not really show anyone too much of what is on the minds of the staff. Fortunately, I will be there and not on the blog at that moment - that way I can sort of "DVR" the blog.

Did Maize draft Peters before O'korn or did Blue draft O'korn first? I think that it would be slightly telling if Maize drafter Peters before O'korn, but it doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot until the Fall.

Nothing to do with O'Korn being passed. It would be dumb if they were on the same team. If Peters backed up Speight it wouldn't mean anything either...we know the starter. This game is going to be 99% of this board pulling for Peters and being irrational about 1 game with a depleted roster (because they're split).

And my expectation (and hope) is that he'll be better this year.  Hopefully, we can blow some teams out and get Peters some meaningful PT.  O'Korn may be the odd man out.
