Brandon - Hoke Rumors Nonsense

Submitted by swdude12 on

"Brandon said he will meet with Hoke after the season -- as he does with every head coach at Michigan -- and will discuss the season, personnel, the coaching staff and how to fix the problems that have been apparent."

Not sure where all the hate for Brandon comes from. He of course wants Michigan to succeed having played here. If Hoke isn't the right guy, he'll be gone. But he is the coach for at least another 2 years.

This is a pretty forceful vote of confidence if you read Brandon's post on the U of M athletics website..much stronger than the Angelique article most of these comments refer to. Amazing how a recruit could force this in a day. This Peppers recruitment is going to be quite the soap opera the next couple months.

We need stability and some upperclassmen that are Hoke's recruits to see this through. There needs to be continuous improvement from here. Do we all remember the days when we went 8-4, 9-3, 10-2? A major difference those years was that we beat either, some, or all MSU, PSU, OSU, while losing a game that we should not have. This year we have lost to all 3.

Another thing to keep in mind regarding ESPN starting the Hoke "hot seat" rumors is that ESPN is heading up the SEC network starting in 2014. If you don't think they'll take any opportunity to sway the top recruits to SEC then you are naive. They want the SEC to continue to dominate for ratings and $.

Which part of that do you think is a conspiracy? I think we can all agree ESPN is interested in making money, and the success of the SEC, and subsequently the SEC network, give them the best chance of making the most money. To me, the conspiracy is why ESPN controls as much of the sports worldview as they do, when there's clearly a conflict of interest.

Brandon, because of his experience as a Michigan player and as AD, understands the situation that Michigan is in more than anyone.  He knows where Michigan was when he took over the AD's position, and he knows where Michigan was at the end of the Carr tenure.

The most important sentence in his quote is, "It's about building a program."  Meaning, Michigan isn't there yet.  It's one thing to take over for a coach who had all the tools at his disposal, like Zook at Florida, but just never seemed to get over the hump.  That is not Michigan.  As I've said elsewhere, Michigan was a shell of its former self, despite what many people refused to believe.  Hoke was brought in to rebuild the program, and doing anything disrupt that process now could be send Michigan into a tail spin that would take EVEN LONGER to recover from.

Young, inexperienced players who start prematurely due to roster/depth issues don't stay young and inexperienced for long.  In time, they become mature and HIGHLY experienced.  Then, the young guys that you have on the roster can redshirt, develop normally, and play when it is their turn, and not be pressed into service.

Sort of like how he understands hiring planes to write Go Blue over Spartan Stadium? Or placing a gigantic noodle in MI Stadium? Not paying for the MMB to go to Dallas until the public pressured him into it? Seat cushion fiasco? Watching film w coaches even though his football experience consists of being a practice punching bag for guys that actually played for Bo? Did you know Jerry Jones was on the football team at Arkansas? Cowboys have been irrelevant for the past 15 years - literally a .500 record. Sound familiar?

Other coaches have had more success with less.

Hoke has built his way to less wins each year.

Hoke's limited success has come with the previous coaches players.

If building a program takes time, why extend that time to Hoke but not Rodriguez?  You can point to the records and I'm not necessarily against the firing of Rodriguez, but three years has been used to bash one coach while with another it "isn't enough time."

This "more success with less" meme is bullshit. Name one, and I'll bet that the roster he inherited looked nothing like the roster Hoke inherited. I've stated my support for RR, based on the bare cupboard Carr handed over (20+ scholarships short), repeatedly. To me, the problem with RR was that he was doing very little to rebuild that roster deficiency, and actually made it worse when it came to the OL. Hoke addressed that need immediately, and locked in two elite OL classes. This is at the heart of the "not enough time" issue. There years (really two recruiting wise) is not enough when the coach is restocking the roster like Hoke is, but his players, in particular the OL, have not become upperclassmen. Hoke's most successful season came via a group of upperclassmen, from Carr's last class, that lead the team and Denard's magic. The problem is the talent and depth (which was still an issue then) fell precipitously off a cliff after that. Which, again, is why we're struggling this season more than last. As I have said over and over. There was always going to be a "lull year" in which the small and relatively weak classes from RR years bite Michigan in the ass. It's simply the cycles of college football. Every program goes from being veteran to young, then to veteran again. The trick is to make sure that the whole team doesn't become young all at once. That is the retention issue, and the ability to redshirt, that is so important in maintaining long term success. RR had a depleted roster, so he didn't RS many guys, and then he had retention issues as well. Look at the number Ron Utah posted. Look at the comparatively small size of our 4th and 5th year players. That is the issue, and those seeds were sown on RR's watch, just like the seeds of RR's similar lack were sown on Carr watch. Programs that remain successful year in and year out do so by maintaining and cultivating their recruiting pipeline. Michigan's broke, and Hoke is now mending it.

Explain the coaching prowess behind the TWO damning delay of game calls that potentially cost us vs PSU. That should never happen. There are many other indicators that hint at moderate intellect possessed by Hoke outside of the offensive issues. He is not a tactician. And Al Borges has not once shown me he can adapt and make lemons into lemonade. I don't want to get into it more because I know your response. Lets agree to disagree. But I do hope you are the one who turns out right. But every bone in my body hopes Al Borges will be gone and Hoke gets 1-2 more years IF Borges goes.

Since it's mgoblog, you should have made a graph: income on the x-axis, intelligence on the y-axis. And, according to you, it's a straight line, up and to the right.

Give me a break. A lot of people make money; some of them are smart.

I don't know Brady Hoke one bit. He may be the smartest guy we've ever had as coach, or the dumbest. I have no clue.

But please don't tell me that because he makes a lot of money he's some kind of genius. I've known too many people who are well off to know that this is clearly not the case.

I think this makes a lot of sense and is completely consistent with DB statement.  It looks like the o line issues set up a lot of the other issues on offense.  I also agree that this staff does not seem to be as crisp in-game tacticians as most programs, and that is rather concerning.  Hopefully, eventually, talent from the recruiting will overcome all of this and M will wind up being the "LSU of the Big Ten" (with Coach Hoke being a less crazy and less shady version of Les Miles).

That stated, do you think that a plausible outcome will be that Borges and M part ways at the end of the season?  I do.  I also do not think a new external OC would be brought in, since new OC's would want to put their own position coaches in place.  I think the most likely outcome (apart from no changes at all) would be the elevation of Coach Hecklinski into the OC position (although not sure what impact this would have on his current role as Recruitment Coordinator), and Coach Jackson chooses to retire.  I think Coach Funk gets a pass, as his linemen are indeed very young and he has been a very good recruiter.  I think this is what makes Borges expendable, since he does not really recruit at all and turns out to be Funk's saving grace this year.  If all of this happens, then 2 new assistants are brought in to coach some combination of QB/WR/RB.......does this make any sense?

You are forever destined to mediocrity. When you are building an offense from the shadow of Denard Robinson it takes time. Fitz couldn't run behind the other/earlier OL either. Denards überspeed covered it all up. Consider the day when Denard was knocked out by/at Nebraska. The defense went into angry dog blitz mode, the OL folded like cards and we lost. Fast forward to 2013. No Denard, defense blitzes like stampeding goats, and DG is under intense pressure. The single key...wait for it....is the day when we can neutralize repeated blitzes long enough to burn the defense's "cheating". When we reach that space it's game-back-on... Also Usually the "false" votes of confidence are really reaaaalllly bland. For DB to go into a lot of detail makes his words ring a lot truer in everyone's minds, according to me. I think it will be another 15 years before another player can achieve the feats of DRob. Maybe 20. Although I would very much like to see a certain Mr Peppers prove me wrong with play on both sides of the ball.

our ad has to put out a trire fire with peppers.  Isnt that a recruiting violation not to mention a little demeaning and a reflection on how far we've fallen?  Guess it is better than skywriting in lansing.
