so if Burlon plays with NJ he gets $665k/year but if he's in the AHL he gets $65k/year? seems like good incentive to work on your game

also, regrettable that he is forced to live in new jersey

That is correct.  Kind of.  His actual salary goes up each year and includes bonuses, but the cap hit (the average) is 662.5k/per year while he's in the NHL.

SEASON AHL SALARY NHL SALARY P. BONUSES S. BONUS CAP HIT
2011-12 $65,000 $612,500 $0 $87,500 $662,500
2012-13 $65,000 $637,500 $0 $87,500 $662,500
2013-14 $65,000 $737,500 $0 $87,500 $662,500

If he actually plays a full year in the NHL, the bonuses are ridiculously easy to tap into. So he'd make more than his indicated salary. However, it's unlikely he'll play in NJ until he puts in at least 2 seasons with Albany. College kids usually take longer to crack the big league team, especially with an organization like NJ.

in NJ's style and Lamierello (sp?) loves US college players. Provided Burlon keeps working, in today's NHL, those two way contract guys are gold since they're a miniscule cap number. If guys get hurt in the NHL and a team is near the cap limit (which NJ almost always is), the two way contract guys get shuttled back and forth a lot between AHL & NHL since they're essentially free to the NHL team based on their average cap number. I'd expect one full year in the AHL to make sure he's a competent pro, then by year 2 he'll be back and forth with NJ to see if he's a NHL'er.
