Per TomVH and many others:
Good for him, this is probably the upside of missing on Hand, but he gets 4 yrs on scholarship and we have an extra spot in the 15 class.

I like this move, get him on campus and allow the coaches to fully concentrate on needs for the '15 class. This may explain the dearth of back-up plans for defensive linemen as the coaches already had one built in.
I know some people don't like this offer, but I think Pallante can help us out down the road. He's at least as good as Ryan Glasgow, who's seen a fair amount of playing time.
I don't think he's ever going to be a super-star type player, not sure he's athletic enough, but I think he can be the type of player that consistently does his job and helps other players, particularly in the run game. Good use of hands, good leverage, can be solid on the nose or at 3-tech (prefer he grows into a NT though).
I really like him as a prospect.
For giving your two cents. Perhaps preemptively your posts will keep people from freaking out about this development. We can hope anyway.
Oh....and good for the kid. That has got to be a pretty exciting thing for a high schooler to hear.
The staff felt he was good enough for a scholarship in 2015, they missed out on their top target, go ahead and move the kid up to 2014 and let him start with the team right away. I can't understand why anyone would criticize that logic.....though, at this point there are those that will criticize anything this staff does.
Also probably exciting for the parent(s) who won't have a tuition bill to pay.
I feel like at the very least based on his wrestling prowess he's going to bring incredible technique with great leverage to practice and force our Olinemen to get their shit together. He's going to be a hard guy to move.
Well, here is another former wrestler who did not have a sky-high recruiting profile. Count me in.
Errrr.... Mike Martin was a 4 star and top 100 to some sites.
Mike Hart was a 3 star.
I wrestled Mike Martin my senior year of high school.
It didn't go well.
Pix...or it did not happen!
How are you still alive and typing?
6 years of hardcore rehab
Don't expect Pallante to be Martin because he's a semi-undersized white DT. This will lead to disappointment
I'm hoping no-one does this and instead appreciates him for what he brings to the table. I don't think anyone is predicting superstardom, but a quietly effective plugger who uses good technique is a reasonable expectation. Again, I am always about taking a few sleepers per class and like this better thantaking a flyer on a kid the coaches haven't built a relatuionship with.
Mike Martin is clearly mixed but ok.
i could agree IF he grows into a solid NT or 3DT and develops exceptional technique and instincts to offset his lack of natural ability. theres always role players on teams, more so than stars, and every single guy has a role even if its just busting it on scout team to provide starters with best possible looks. however UM should be recruiting 85 players they envision starting and making an impact ....ie if they do not envision potential of all league player at some point in 4-5 years, whats the point? this team does not need any more ryan glasgows especially via scholarship...they can secure those types of guys just like they did with glasgow and likely could have done with pallente...as walkons. im sure hes a nice kid and hard worker and will bust his butt to play his best and rep UM in respectful manner....but this team needs freaks on DL, not undersized walkon type DT's that hoke dreams of turning into rob renes 2.0....this kid has a ceiling and its likely in sight, they need beasts with pro type potential at DT and rush end. weve all watched this DL this year....they need athletes to rush the passer and dominate 1on1s in run game. championship teams usually roll out deep rotation of draft-caliber DL men - take a look at FSU's DL this year or any team down south. this team is not talented enough or deep enough to offer schollies to hope and prayer projects like this kid....if they can bring in big athletic kids to win 1on1 matchups and alter games then several years from now hoke will have the luxury of extending scholarships to kids that wouldve walked on (or secure equally talented prospect via walk on). his program is not humming and recruiting like bama or FSU and until they at least compete with MSU and OSU on regular basis, then they need to view all 85 scholarships as the precious commodities they truly are and award accordingly....they already got guys like hollowell and richardson and rawls and hayes, etc that likely will never offer the contributions necessary on champtionship caliber teams. if league titles are the minimum goal with national title aspirations then this program needs as many genetic mistakes as possible...teach the insanely athletic kids to play with technique and heart.....increasing overall team athleticism and speed certainly improves chances of winning more than tyring to find "effort" and "technique" peoples champions and signing multiple low ceiling walkon types. maybe they view this kid as part of the answer on the DL, maybe he solves part of the "we will rush 4" enigma, maybe they envision pallente as a multi-year starter and potential all league type player....maybe im completely wrong, but championship teams usually win bc they have more difference makers and pros on the field than the opponent, particularly at positions like DL where impact guys can just shred or at least completely alter an opponents gameplan (sure they must execute to succeed as a whole - but consistently beating the guy across from you and winning majority of 1on1s is the idea) ....and considering the current roster does not include many pro prospects (maybe the RS and true frosh end up becoming beasts, maybe not, but you need to go out regardless and recruit the next year as if they will all become busts - at least thats what championship teams do, they NEVER settle) they would be better served bringing in as many quick twitch problems as possible rather than the 6'1" 270 lb marginallly athletic walkon "technician" types who are a dime a dozen. good for this kid, congrats to him, this post is not directed at him, god bless him for snatching up an almost priceless scholarship opportunity....more directed at hoke and staff who needed all the help they could get when they offered him like 2 yrs ago and shockingly still need all the help they can get. i hope he ends up being rob renes 2.0 but the chances are slim....ill root for him regardless of my thoughts but my thoughts remain that they have enough regular "guys" on this squad like ash and heitzman and beyer and glasgow, etc.....need more "freaks" that can win 1on1 matchups against OSU, not just "guys" that will play the correct technique and maintain scheme integrity without ever dominating (other than the flashes of great "competing" and "physicalness" vs UMs OL in practice)
Is Pallante in the mold of Rob Renes, Grant Bowman, Norman Heuer, Will Johnson, or Jeremy Van Alstyne in talent level and physical attributes?
Of those guys, I think Will Johnson would be a good comparison. But honestly, I look at Pallante and see a slower Mike Martin. Martin's quickness off the ball has been unmatched by a Michigan defensive tackle in the time I've been watching the team, so that's a high bar to live up to, and Pallante isn't known for his speed. But his leverage, size, the way he moves, etc. remind me of Martin a lot. More of a plugger than a penetrator, whereas Martin could do both.
If he's even a rough facsimile of Martin, that will help the DL immensely.
Both were champion wrestlers, and both MOVE like wrestlers.
Taylor was a wrestler, and yeah, he's probably a pretty solid comparison...although again, I don't think Pallante is quite that athletic. Taylor wasn't known for his athleticism, but he was still good enough to be a mid-round NFL draft pick.
Any thoughts if this is prompted as some stated because of losing Hand or is this maybe connected with Pipkins?
Looks like Henry is a rising talent so if this kid can develop and be something akin to Mike Martin starting next fall (not playing but in line for that position) then has there been a determination about Pipkins?
He has an injury, he'll be back next year. The coaches love him, and he was playing well. He's the starting NT in 2014 and key reason why we should be excited by the DL next year
I think Pipkins will be back once he recovers from his torn ACL.
I think the coaches were counting on/leaving room for Hand. Now that Hand is gone and Jhonny Williams closed the door, this seems like a reaction to those developments.
Will Johnson did not play like a 4-star, so I think the comparison is apt. He was mainly a solid backup and forgettable starter, except for the fact that he could bench press a Mack truck.
Thanks Magnus. Hey, you can do well for any defense by simply doing your job and using sound technique. Heininger did well for us in that regard. Always a spot for guys like that.
And welcome Brady Pallante to the class of 2014! Congratulations!
His floor is Glasgow and his Ceiling is Renes?!
I don't know if his floor is Glasgow since he's still smaller that Glasgow. Glasgow isn't the most athletic, but he's pretty big. I think it's likely he's at least as good as Glasgow though.
The last time I saw him he was getting blown off the ball on first and goal which resulted in Iowa's game trying TD. Nice to know that the staffs backup plan for a 5 star top 10 overall player is n unranked undersized Dlineman. I hope the best for Brady, but please don't give the Mike Martin comparison because of wrestling as Martin was also highly ranked on the gridiron.
Nobody has said he's the next Mike Martin.
Glasgow is also a redshirt frosh. He's getting more PT than Godin and Strobel. He's going to have bad plays, but he's a solid player right now. Heitzman was getting blown off the ball at this time last year too.
So that puts '14 up to 16 now, correct? How many more are we realistically looking at?
From my understanding, like 50 kids are going to transfer the moment the Ohio State game ends. So, we've got plenty of open spots.
What's really happening is that the entire UM football program is shutting down, with the assets being stripped and distributed among the rest of the conference.
The one part that's staying is Brandon, who is eagerly looking forward to leasing the stadium for Beyoncé concerts, tractor pulls, monster truck events, rodeos, motorcross, and re-enactments of the Hunger Games. The Wow Factor will be off the charts.
No, you are crazy! That is a move of a private equity guy not David Brandon. First they'd load the athletic department with debt, take tons of fees for themselves, cut benefits and salaries for everyone else not named "themselves", then sell it off in pieces while generating massive fees for their buddies at Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs. Sheesh, David Brandon is just an ex-CEO - he'd prefer just to IPO the Michigan Athletic Department, take most of his pay in stock options and live happily ever after increasing revenue by 10% a year.... don't get all Mitt Romney on us.
/self ban for politics
Can we have a tractor pull with monster trucks, in the middle of a rodeo on motorcross bikes during a Beyone concert which is a musical re-enactment of the Hunger Games?
Think of the synergy!
BiSB = Ace Williams?
Blue in South Bend? More like Blue in Truth Bend!
/High-fives self, tells many friends of great internet burn he bestowed upon another this morning.
Nope. Bizzzbee is a demon spawn hybrid of Ace Williams and Jason Whitlock! He probably also has a political ideology that we should all argue about and I guarantee he thinks we should FIRE THE BORGESES!
Show us your sources!
I believe that is correct. If Pallante is in the 2014 class, then that would make 2 DTs, 1 DE, 4 LBs and 2 DBs (Peppers being in that group), if I am not mistaken. I had thought that there was some chatter about this class could be anything from 16 to 20, but I am not sure. It cannot be too many more in any case, I would think.
Good for him.
I have to wonder: Does this suggest that McDowell probably won't be part of the class?
Nah, probably just that Hand/Williams won't.
They had at LEAST two spots, because they were looking to take Hand and McDowell. Pallante is taking Hand's spot (no pressure, young man). McDowell's spot continues to exist.
Tim Sullivan seems to believe that McDowell will end up committing to Michigan.
Hasn't changed his view on McDowell, still believes M is in solid position. Not a slam dunk, they have family in Florida (UF, FSU), and Sparty is a player. But he grew up a M fan, his family were M fans, and they love the academics. On the downside, he did say the team performing below expectations might have an effect, where he doesn't believe it did for Hand.
As a side note, he continues to indicate he doesn't see any of the '14 commits wavering due to the losses. Specifically Peppers and Drake Harris, with the latter excited to be in AA in a few weeks as an early enrollee. Unfortunately the same can't be said for mgrowold, who he confirms from many other outlets will not be on campus in 2014.
MGrowOld's decision was obviously based on football. His insistence that it was the academics is laughable at best.
It should be a Merry Thanksgiving in the Pallante household!
I recall how he led some of those nasty defenses.
He was on the '97 NC team, I believe was a senior in '99. Tough bastard, always snuck through the line and made key plays. Hoke coached him, and when I see Pallante I think Brady is actually trying to turn him into Renes. Like a wizard would
Very happy for Pallante and his Family. I am also fine with the move.
But, he is also the type of kid that we had when our D's sucked and also the type of kid that state had when they were irrelevant and not a machine that turns no stars into the top D in the country.
Our players and coaches will decide which this is.. and we won't know for a lot of years.
An entire defense cannot be made of kids like this, but there is a definite role and definite way for Brady to shine and be an important player.
Good news! A great way to reward his commitment.
Also his last name keeps reminding me of the seeing stones in Lord of the Rings, palantir. Yep. Though someone's probably already made that comparison.
does anything in pallante's tape indicate that he can be an offensive coordinator?
but then again neither does Borges.
A good test case for the Heinenger Certainty Principle. I like wrestlers on the D-line, hope to see him starring in QB nightmares in a few years!
Congrats to Pallante. A nice holiday gift. Here's hoping he developes into that space eater that can take on and stalemate the double team allowing our linebackers to run to the ball.
Awesome for the kid, and pretty sweet for us. Get him in the program early and learn 'em up.
This earns Hoke more credibility down the road when he gets guys to agree to a greyshirt with the possiblity to convert to a full scholarship immediately. "Hey we told B Pallante there was a possibility and look what happened." That doesn't drive 5 starts to Ann Arbor, but it helps recruiting for depth on the margin.
There is already precedent of this with Jeremy Clark, but this makes that case even stronger.
Good for Pallante. If I remember his Hello: post correctly, he's a state champion wrestler. Or a very good one at any rate.
Last guy we had around here like that went by the name of Mike Martin, and he turned out alright.
Honestly, outside of Alabama is anyone really playing for a national championship? Saban is head and shoulders above everyone else including the guys over at OSU. In fact, if you are a Freshmen or Sophomore at Alabama it will be difficult to get playing time. Any athlete who relishes the opportunity to play and to play early in their career needs to look at a program like ours. There are ample opportunities to compete and to play early at Michigan - especially if we tweak the coaching ranks.
I have no problem with UM giving a scholarship to a "Poor Man's Mike Martin"
Congrats Brady. Go get 'em. I actually like this move given what has happened.
I think this is a good move. We whiffed on Hand... so at least we're making the most of it by filling the spot asap and opening up one for 2015. Question is - who is going to take the 2015 spot? Mike Weber?
I think Weber is gone to MSU, regardless.
Help me out, how does this open a '15 spot? He should still be on scholarship, so where is the extra scholarship coming from?
It comes from not filling the spot BP will now take in the 2014 class with another player. Yes, BP will count against the 85 total, but they will now take 1 less 2014 kid and that frees up another spot for a 2015 kid.
