A fat joke about our former coach?  Yes he failed but gave it his all, and loves Michigan.  That was a douchy comment.  I wish Coach Hoke nothing but the best, no matter where he goes.

It is rare for a college HC to get fired and rehired that same year. Rich Rod sat out a year. Some HCs will take a coordinator position, but taking a position coach seems like a pretty big step down. But I guess Hoke has never been a defensive coordinator before (but he somehow still found a way to land the HC job at Michigan...ugh).

  • That DL coach played linebacker and has coached linebackers before.
  • Their outside LB coach (Elliot) is a DB coach by trade.
  • They just lost their DB coach.

A lot of familiar names on that staff--Elston played at Michigan while Hoke was an assistant, Bump's son, Wellman. The DC and the strength coach both went to Wayne State. The whole staff on the defensive side of the ball has some connection to Michigan or Detroit.

ND has been losing ground in Midwest recruiting even with Michigan being down. Add Harbaugh to the mix now and OSU winning a national championship (raising the profile of the Big Ten), and I think Kelly may be feeling some pressure to ramp up his Midwest presence.

The ND defensive coaches have a lot of ties to Michigan: Hoke, Mike Elston (Michigan 1998 alum), Bob Elliott (Bump Elliott's son), and Brian Van Gorder (Detroit native who went to Wayne State). I am guessing this means ND will make Hoke the DL coach, move Elston to outside LBs, and Elliott to secondary if the rumors are true that Kerry Cooks is moving on to Oklahoma.

Well, I will definitely file that under "Thoughts That Would Not Have Occurred To Me". The only thing that I can think of here is that he would fill in with the defensive backs since Kerry Cooks left for a job with Oklahoma. I think that's the only opening ND had, but I could be wrong. Interesting move either way, and good luck to him there. Also, screw Notre Dame.

Whatever dude.

Notre Dame is a great school, and coaching there would be an awesome gig for anyone - awesome facilities, high salary, plus he gets to stay with his buddy Aaron Wellman. Now that they're off the schedule I don't see an issue with it, we did fire him after all. It would be crazy to let a rivalry get in the way of a career opportunity like that.

I still love the guy and wish him the best. Hopefully he can return to Michigan in some capacity in the future, maybe as DL coach in a couple of years once Harbaugh has established himself.

They posted this on Monday -- sorry if this has already been noted on MGoBlog:

"Notre Dame: Former Michigan director of strength and conditioning Aaron Wellman has joined the Notre Dame staff as assistant director of strength and conditioning."

The Hoke/ND marriage is a strange one, considering how much smack he (rightly) talked about them for weaseling out of the series w/Michigan. Will be interesting to see what his role is there. For all his faults as a head coach, Hoke is a very good D-line coach and an excellent recruiter, especially in the Midwest, so not necessarily a bad pickup for Kelly's staff.
