Bracketology open thread
pretty legit at the right time
Because they are playing against SEC teams.
IMO, there's 33 locks to be at-larges (Colorado, PSU and Illinois included in that figure).
That leaves 4 spots for Alabama, BC, Clemson, Georgia, Saint Mary's, USC, VaTech or one of the other outliers.
My guess for the last four spots: Clemson, VTech, Saint Mary's and Georgia.
that we would be an 11 seed... sounds pretty weak
It's absurd that we'd drop from a 10 to an 11 by losing to the top team in the nation, but we're talking about the decisions of people that live and die by a ball going through a rim. So yeah, logic, maybe not so much.
Lunardi had us as a 10 seed after the OSU game, and then flipped us with Illinois that night.
I think he just took another look at the resumes and decided Illinois's was better.
That's probably true, but I guess I don't understand that logic. U of I is getting a lottt of credit for that UNC game. They haven't played nearly well enough to justify a flip with either MSU or Michigan.
Or maybe I'm just tired of seeing Lunardi's ugly mug.
11 is better than 8, 9, or 10. It's a marginally-more difficult first round match-up, but second-round match up is far more favorable. There are 7-8 teams that Michigan probably cannot beat, and being an 11 stretches out the time in which Michigan would have to play them.
avoid the #1 seed as long as possible
Or even a 12 if it doesn't involve "The First Four" in Dayton.
Methinks we can make the Sweet 16 if our path involves a (6,3) or a (5,4) combination.
While a 10-seed makes the first game easier, the second stop on that path (7,2) would likely be formidable. I'd rather play that level of competition in the Sweet 16.
I think there's a larger difference between the #1/#2 seeds and the rest than there is between the #5 - #8 seeds, who seem largely interchangeable. After you get past the top seven or eight teams in the country, parity really kicks in.
I don't think we'll fall to a 12 seed and be everyone's sexy pick for the 5-12 upset. As long as we don't have a potential second round matchup with Kansas or Kentucky, we stand a good shot at that Sweet 16.
They've beaten St .John's and no one else. Their entire case is based on the idea that the WCC is a good conference, even though it's not.
This was obviously supposed to be a reply. Sorry.
Yeah, that's entirely possible. Of the 6-7 teams fighting for the last few spots, you could make a case for (or more appropriately, against) all of them.
This is a gratifying day for the program. In the words of Bacari, HALOL on the rest of the college hoops world. This giant is now awake.
What a fun season, what a blast the last month has been.
Better days are ahead. But, this team is dangerous next week, regardless of draw.
I'm thinking an 11-seed. Playing 6th seed Xavier in Round One. Just like 1989
What does HALOL mean?
HALOL = LOL, but with a bonus HA to make it even better. Assistant coach Bacari Alexander often uses it in his tweets.
Live stream to Crisler arena during the show.
They wouldn't.....would they.....?
And OP, just a suggestion, but you may want to change your subject to Bracketology/Selection Show or something similar. We don't really need another thread in 40 minutes for the selection show. But between the title (and the show on ESPN before it), and the fact that MGoBlog does not adhere to Daylight Savings Time, making it look like this thread has been up for over an hour, it's bound to happen.
You know how the tourney loves intrigue. I think either that happens our we end up with a potential second round matchup with SDSU. After the Minn game Lunardi had us playing them in a 3-14 matchup or a possible second round matchup.
pretty good draw
I don't think Purdue likes that draw at all. Belmont is 30-4 and three of those losses are twice at Tennessee by a combined 10 points, and at Vandy. This is a very good team.
So confused with all these different times.
97% at picking who's in and who's out or match ups?
Who's in and out. He's actually pretty bad at seeding and placing teams correctly.
And given there are over 30 auto-bids, and over 30 locks, all he has to do is pick four spots.
He's a farce.
he's like 2% at picking matchups.
He's actually pretty awful at picking seeds as well.
Two years ago on Selection Sunday, they made us sweat it out until the end of the last bracket. Hopefully we don't have to wait that long again.
Our tournament hopes were a lot slimmer two years ago. I can't stress this enough: WE ARE FINE.
It did make it super-gratifying when we finally got in though. There is an awesome youtube clip of the scene at Crisler.
Lunardi has us projected as an 11 seed playing...wait for it...WEST VIRGINIA!
That would be awesome.
were gonna play SDSU in the sweet 16!!!!
Granted, making the sweet 16 would be amazing, and at that point all the teams are good. That being said, SDSU is a really good team, and I'd don't know that I'd like our chances.
would be epic
If Michigan beats a team you consider "good", would you be happy or sad?
So many pictures of cats trolling that I want to post. Resisting.
Lunardi's projection of us playing against West Virginia in the West Region worries me. If we get by them we are going to have to play a very tough Texas team. I would prefer drawing BYU in the 2nd round like he has MSU potentially doing.
If MSU gets BYU in the second round, that is bullcrap. BYU is not that good in its current state. Without Davies, they should be more like a #4 seed.
Lunardi's matchups seriously.
Is Lunardi four feet tall?
Hobbit, or dwarf.
Do you think it is more important to be a successful team in conference ala Wisconsin, but not as successful in the tournament. Or would you rather see this team try to emulate Michigan State's recent run over the last 12 years with few conference championships but a lot of great tournament runs? Personally I think the tournament is way more important than big ten championships, and yes I know we would like to do both. If you had to chose, which would it be?
If I had to choose, I'd pick national exposure with great tournament runs. The tournament is a lot more spread out then the BTT and it generates a lot more good press for the program. Either scenario would be good.
College basketball is all about the tournament. Imagine the Fab Five winning two Big Ten titles but losing early in the tourney. No one would remember them.
Greatness is measured by Final Four appearances, not doing well in you conference. Duke has won 9 of their last 12 (now 10 of 13?), but before breaking through last year all you'd hear about is how they underachieve in the Tournament. Simply put, as jmblue said, there's s movie about the Fab Five on tonight; there's no movie about the Big Ten Champ those years, or Kentucky's freshman class last year. It all about March. You can fix a so-so season with a great Tourney run, but a bad Tournament run can wreck a great regular season (compare MSU and Kansas last year).
Beilein on TV now on CBS
big Maize rage banner in background at Crisler
More importantly the big chairs were used.
For some reason I can't get the image of Coach Beilein calling for someone to, "fetch...the comfy chairs!" out of my head.
Looked like a nice showing, hope to hear them go wild.
B101 has the bracket up...I really like what they have projected...We matchup well with Vandy with a match up with UT looming...UT is very, very beatable..
I'm hoping for 2PM Friday and any post hangover tip time on Sunday. I'm out from sundown Friday to sundown Saturday, so I'm really, really hoping to get the hookup this year. I was agonizing missing the first half of the Oklahoma game in 2009.
I'll be happy as long as the first game isn't on Tuesday or Wednesday.
its st pattys and that alone isnt conducive to watching mich play
I'm leaving for vegas thursday night. Hoping for a friday/sunday showing before we head to the sweet 16
But when was the last time Kenny Smith or Barkley covered college basketball? Does Charles remember anything about his years other than taking money?
Darius looks soooooooooo nervous.
Anybody else puke seeing Duke's haughty reaction to being named a #1 seed? It's like they're brainwashed.
Even Pitt was more excited, and they're less deserving of a 1 seed than anyone with their poor Big East tournament showing. Also, HALOL at no 1 seed for ND
OSU, Duke, and ND in the Final Four, with MSU going on a #1 seed gets upset like last year run to the Four?
My god, it'd be an all-evil Final Four!
The Fab Five called Duke a bunch of "Uncle Toms." That's good enough for me.
Looked like a great turnout at Crisler when they interviewed Beilien. Awesome scene.
Charles Barkley is going to be so entertaining throughout this show, if only to hear him say "turnment" over and over again.
thats all i got hahaha
Don't see how people are projecting Villanova a 10 seed after loosing so much down the stretch.
Not that it was really in doubt, but it's nice.
How did Georgia get a 10 seed?
That is baffling. What SEC slappy was slobbering over them enough to push them past a 12 seed?
If Georgia got in then Michigan has to get in
Georgia a 10? Wow
Now I am nervous...even though I shouldn't be
It would be nice if this weren't a repeat of two years ago when as the world's most lockey lock we had to wait until the last spot of all was revealed
Safe to say the Kenny Smith/Barkley experiment isn't working here.
Those teams getting in concern me.
The B1G may lose a spot? PSU may not make it now! I Georgia is a 10 see we better be at least a 10 seed!
Georgia as a 10 seed?
Bama fans are going to be furious if they don't get in
I wonder if Joe Lunardi's head is exploding yet.. He had UAB and Georgia on the outside looking in, and they were both put in the first Region announced... SUCH A FARCE!
To be fair no one really saw UAB getting in.
And Georgia being a 10 shocks me? Especially after the collapse against Alabama.
If anything, this is proving conference tournaments don't matter THAT much.
I still doubt they'd have the whole Crisler set up, Beilein interview, and Michigan attention if they aren't going to get a bid. Wouldn't make any sense.
We beat Clemson....there's no way they'd put them in over us.
Er.... Northwestern beat us.
We're in, but that logic doesn't work.
When Clemson has squarely been on the bubble and our resume is better than theirs across the board, yes, it does.
Till (at least) the Final Four...
Thats Bull Shit
of the two brackets so far, which would you guys rather be in? I'm leaning toward the second one there, probably in Georgia's exact place.
trading places with Penn State.
not nervous but wow
I think the UAB/Georgia getting in means either Michigan State, Penn State, or maybe both are out
Please MSU. Please MSU. Please MSU.
Maybe Georgia is getting the "Good Sportsmanship" seeding award for their AD speaking out against oversigning. On a different note, MSU getting snubbed for Georgia would be HALOLOLOL.
8 seed! Wow!!!
Michigan 8 seed against...
Holy shit, we're an 8!!!
Holy shit. 8 seed?!?!?
Look like a tough game against TN!
wow an 8
Michigan vs Tenessee!
With Cheating annoying Vols, with Duke waiting...yikes...
having to play tennessee
Why not? (PS Kudos to Oakland)
As one of the teams you'd least like to face as a higher seed. Probably better than season showed due to controversy there.
F Rockey Top 8 seed Baby!!!
8 seed!! I like our draw!! Tenn and Duke!!
The point guard for Duke is a really good player especially his defense.
Wow. Its a tough second round matchup of course, but wow. And also beating Bruce Pearl is the most delicious thing imaginable.
WE'RE COMING FOR YOU, DUKE! FOR THE FIVE!!!!
Let's hope the pump-up portions overpower the downers
PSU made it.
Congrats Penn State as well!
PSU 10 seed. Damn they love the B1G
Did ILLINI make it?
It might not be looking good for Illinois, might be in the final four if they made it.
8 seed is rough. Second round match with Duke..... ouch
I thought Michigan was solid for a 10/11 so I was relaly happy when Duke won....don't want to see them play again
Certainly winnable game against Tennessee
Tennessee has struggled and been inconsistent this season
Set up the rematch with Oakland after we beat Duke... ;-) Then finish off Fisher for good measure.
i appreciate the respect, but don't like that road ahead.
I like Penn States draw a lot better than ours. I'd rather play Temple then SDSU over Tennessee then Duke.
i was thinking the same thing
Let's beat Tennessee first.
Do we know what time we're playing yet? This sucks having an exam Fri afternoon. LOL.
Nope, times come out later in the week.
duke will be prime time around 7 and we will play after them
Agreed, give me Penn State's schedule.
Yikes - not liking Tenn followed by Duke. I'd rather have been a 10 or 11, take out an overrated 6 or 7 seed, then play a 2 or 3 seed. Hmmmmmm.....
EDIT: On the brightside, if we beat Tenn, the nation hates Duke and would be almost entirely rooting for us outside of the state of NC.
virtual road game if we beat tennessee
If we can shoot well from the field we will beat TN. Duke will be tough but they may overlook us.
How do you overlook anyone in the NCAA tournament.
Prediction: State will be an 11 seed and will get a gift matchup against a not-full-strength BYU team. You watch.
EDIT: Second round obv
Illini make it.
selection committee loving the B1G
Illinois against UNLV, 8-9. Seems...a little high for the Illini. The committee is really loving the Big Ten.
I am not complaIning, but an 8th seed is too high, as is a PSU tenth seed. Committee is dumb.
Sparty is sweating
Jesus CAA with 3 bids. Hofstra the odd team out in that Top 4. My alma mater is NIT bound. Shocked VCU got in.
Not going to happen, but it would be so awesome if sparty was left out
I know better than think this possible, but there are like two bubble spots left. If FYS didn't get one this day would be so much better.
Please let Sparty be left out, please!!!!!!!!!
But are they saying SDS is the "5th #1 seed", up against #4 1 seed Duke? I have a hard time buying that. It's again looking like Duke is getting the easy draw (even though by seeding they should have the toughest of the 1's).
Wisconsin still hasnt been called, most likely they are a 4 or 5, so state has to be in the lower half of the bracket
We will probably be playing the late game Friday because Duke might get the primetime spot.
They finished behind UW-Milwaukee in the regular season Horizon League!
Wisconsin - Belmont
This is funny
Sparty has to be a 10.
Could be a tough game for bucky!
Sparty made it.
Florida a two seed??!?
PSU and MSU should have been lower?
That is the weakest bracket ever...
Florida instead of Duke, then a BYU 3 seed.
Yep, the committee has done its part to get sparty to another sweet sixteen
I would switch with them in a heartbeat. Even their first round matchup (UCLA) is easier!
state got an easy draw... overrated ucla and then an overrated florida with byu/stjohn's waiting in the wings
am i blind or did illinois get left out?
in the Southwest vs UNLV
Once we know the date and time of the TN game. I'll probably have to work that day! Plane tickets will be expensive as well!
Once we know the date and time of the TN game. I'll probably have to work that day! Plane tickets will be expensive as well!
play a good tennessee team and then hopefully play Duke in a hostile environment
I'd be shocked if we kept it close during the game against Duke that the crowd wouldn't be on our side.
Lunardi missed three teams out of his four real bubble picks.
Farce I say, farce.
nobody saw VCU and UAB getting in. Virginia Tech and Colorado got screwed over in particular to not get in over those two teams. Hell even Harvard is more deserving than those two teams.
Tournament committee did a pretty poor job this year.
State has a VERY favorable potential path to their Region's final. UCLA, then potentially Florida, then BYU/St. Johns. They got this based upon their prestige as a tournament team for sure.
Doesn't matter. This MSU team isn't consistent enough to make a run. They'll probably go down in round one.
The nice thing about living in A2 - you can decide to go to U-M events at the last minute. I made it to Crisler just in time. It was fun. Brandon, Beilein and the captains (Douglass and Novak) gave little speeches after the team was selected. BTW, the renovations have already begun - many of the upper-deck sections are seatless right now. Also, the stadium scoreboards are only half-existent right now.
