Bowl selection committee vs WWE - Credibility issues.

Submitted by Harbaughs_Pants on

Penn State has won the B1G fair and square. Penn State has faced OSU and beat them. Yet OSU remains in the CFP and Penn State is left out instead of supplanting OSU. The reward  (?) for Penn State is they get to jump Michigan in the ratings to #5 and Michigan trounced them head to head. I'm sure this makes Penn State's season feel justified.

There is no value placed on the championship. The perceived draw of OSU vs Penn State may be the reason. Fairness and sportsmanship go out the window. Credibility is on par with WWE.

OSU jobbed another school this season and does not deserve to be where they are. That will pan out in the playoffs well enough when we see OSU pull an MSU.

OSU has a talented team, but their political system is strong. That's where they really rate.

That makes absolutely no sense to me. It's all (or at least should be) about Quality Of Wins and Number/Quality of losses. Penn State needed that extra game to get their second Quality Win. Michigan already had three Top 10 (going into the weekend) wins. Combine that with 49-10 head-to-head and it's a no-brainer that Michigan should be ahead of PSU.....and would probably be a 7-10 point favorite on a neutral field.

Any reason this hot take couldn't have found it's way into one of the five threads currently up on the topic?

Or were you worried your thoughts would get buried by other comments and not appreciated by the masses?

We used to have a barrier around here during the RR years that didn't allow new threads to be created if a person didn't have "X" number of points.  After sifting through a couple of these snowflakes, I'd be happy to see that re-implemented.

you've put the decision in someone else's hands.  The simple solution, from the PSU POV: don't lose to Pittsburgh and Michigan.  The committee is meaningless in that circumstance.

People do tend to forget --- this system is still a hell of a lot better than the TWO-team system.  When you had a much higher risk of an undefeated team getting left out completely (re: Auburn 2004).

You should change Waterloo to the Battle of Borodino (outside of Moscow); that battle, and the ensuing aftermath, was where Napoleon  had overtended himself and hit the turning point where everything else went downhill. War and Peace went into detail about this, but albeit from a 19th century Russian perspective.

Waterloo was just the last gasp several years later that made it official (Iowa -> Borodino, OSU -> Waterloo).

If Michigan had beaten Iowa and ended 11-1. I don't think we would have gotten in over 12-1 Clemson or 12-1 Washington who both won their conference championship. Doesn't seem any different than ranking 11-2 conference champion PSU above 10-2 M which the committee did despite a convincing head to head win in M's favor.

Before I saw the rankings, I would have disagreed vehemently with this.  With PSU jumping Michigan, maybe you're right that Washington would have done the same.  But I think the committee would have looked at Washington's non-conference schedule of Idaho, Portland State, and Rutgers and decided that if they'd played a team with a pulse, they might not be 12-1 in the first place.

It sure would have been nice to find out, though.  Damn Competent-Only-Against-Michigan Kirk Ferentz!

Well if that happens then psu is left way behind. osu would get the division in a 3 way tie. the argument then for us would be UM v. UW, which comes down to how much emphasis they put on winning the conference. not sure what the outcome of that would be.

That's the only thing bringing me joy right now.  Also, OSU killed Oklahoma on the road and beat two other top 10 teams in conference, one of them on the road.  IIRC, they beat Nebraska by 50+.  They are a better team.

After watching Clemson and Washington, I'm more upset because we could beat those teams and won't get the chance because we couldn't score two TDs at Iowa and the OSU refs had a chance to get paid while cheering on their favorite team.

Jesus Christ.  This whining shit is horrible.  Who gives a flying fuck if PSU was 5 vs 6.  There is zero difference between the two.  Both teams miss the playoffs and PSU was always going to the Rose Bowl regardless of a 5 or 6.

and what does OSU being in over PSU have to do with credibility.  It is blatantly clear to anyone that OSU had a much stronger case than PSU.  OSU was 11-1 and PSU was 11-2. OSU beat 3 top ten teams including 2 on the road and had one less loss.  And PSU got crushed by us and lost to a 4-loss team which was the only decent team they played OOC.  I think the committee made the right call on the top 4.

Why do people keep thinking professional wrestling has less credibility?  They out-front say they are sports entertainment and the outcome is known beforehand.  And they are at least entertaining about their stuff.

Freaking PSU covers up systemic child sexual assault, then hires a guy who may have tried to cover up sexual assaults (and absolutely lied about his knowledge of it) at Vandy.  Then we are told that winning a football game will help the school "heal" for a proper application of law.  That's the most heelish storyline I could think of.

The only coach who actually was part of the PSU cover up is now defensive coordinator at OSU (Schiano).  This reprobate's current team will probably be in the playoff and supplant PSU even though his current team lost to PSU and, unlike PSU, failed to win the conference.

Maybe this is poetic justice for the institution--PSU.

But where is the justice for OSU--the team that kept a guy who--according to sworn testimony-- failed to report child abuse to the authorities?

exactly...the whole penn state deserves to be in over a team they beat! thing ignores that they'd also get in over a team they didn't beat AND the team (osu) that beat the team (us...kinda) that beat them. Doesn't make much sense to be in over both of us. I think being pissed that osu is in when we're the better team and should have won that game and been in their position right now is understandable. Making an unjustifiable case for psu is not.

destroyed by USC. The only team that can beat USC is Alabama. Thankfully, we are not in the Rose bowl.  FSU is a much better match for us.

FWIW, Wisconsin surrendering a 21 p;oint lead is inexcusable and the coaching staff should have their pay reduced for malpractice.

A 2 loss conference champ is still a 2 loss team. Records are and always will be the first criteria deciding these things. all the playoff teams are 1 loss teams. The. End.

Yeah it pisses me off that OSU is in without even having to win their division, much less their conference, but PSU would not last one minute in the playoff. They lost to Pitt and got annihilated by us.

If we were in OSU's position, we'd all be saying the committee made the right decision. And they can put PSU all the way up to #1 for all I care. It sure as hell does not erase that BEATDOWN we gave them. We made Franklin and that entire team look like a bunch of talentless chumps.

49-10 baby. You can't argue the scoreboard. You can't debate it. It is what it is.

best teams by the eyeball test include Michigan. It is very disappointing, but it is exactly what I expected.
Forget in the playoff, PSU will probably be smoked by USC. OSU - Clemson should be a pointsfest, with Clemson maybe putting up 70. All hail Alabama, champions again, because the only defense I think capable of putting up a fight plays for #6.
