Bowl Season Starts Today

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

I just noticed that the bowl season opens today.   I note, as one article said, only gamblers and football junkies will be interested so I figured this was the place for those types. The contests don't look overly exciting, as you would expect, with the exception that the Houston v. SDSU game might be pretty good.   Interestingly the tickets to that game in Vegas show $9 which seems like quite a bargain.

Enjoy the snow this weekend.  Keep your home fire lit.  And don't forget to mail the fruitcake you got last Christmas to that one buckeye friend you have.

If you like big time college football talent. That SDSU Houston game is intriguing. San Diego state has 2000 yard rusher and future NFLer in DJ Pumphrey. Absolute stud but will be facing one of the better run defenses in college football. Greg Ward for Houston is one of the best dual threat QB'S in the nation. The more I think about it, as a college football fan. I can't wait to watch this game.

I don't care about the whole "too many bowl games" argument. I enjoy bowl season where there is a game on almost everyday for the next 2.5 weeks and breaks up the monotony of the holiday break/vacation period. Catch the last bits of CFB before another long offseason begins.

The Houston vs. SDSU game has a couple good story lines, IMO. First game with Applewhite instead of Herman running the show, so that will be interesting. There's also Pumphrey for SDSU who only needs 108 yards to the all-time leading career rusher in FBS history, he'd be passing Ron Dayne.

Houston got so much hype during the season because they beat Louisville and Oklahoma. Yet they end up in a December 17 bowl while Oklahoma and Louisville go to the sugar and citrus bowls. Not that they deserve better, but Oklahoma and Louisville deserve worse.

That Houston/SD St game should be highly entertaining. However, did you guys see the college hoops lineup for today? Wow. A lot of great matchups on tap for today on the hardwood.

There's also the Air Force Reserve Celebration Bowl, which isn't a FBS game but should be a really good game. NC Central and Grambling both give up their spot in the FCS playoff for the chance to play in this game at the Georgia Dome.

Looks like another FCS semifinal aswell featuring everyone's good friend Bo Pelini.

The YSU-EWU game will be awesome.  I have to root for EWU (even though I would root against YSU by default) because a buddy's dad was a professor there.  The perfect championship match-up would be Madison versus EWU...I'm originally from Northern VA, and so a lot of friends ended up at JMU (think a school like Western for comparison).

Any football is good football this time of year.

Gimme New Mexico comfortably.

Houston/SDSU has the potential to be amazing. The Aztecs running game versus a Houston team featuring the #1 frost in America IMO.

App State/Toledo is a relative unknown and our boy Scott Frost taking UCF from 0-12 to a potential 7 win season.

Don't know much about the last matchup.

The Houston / San Diego State game actually might be worth a watch so long as we approach in the mindset of "Zero fucks given" on the defensive side of the ball. I just hope Southern Mississippi and Louisiana Lafayette soak up that primetime limelight because that's not happening perhaps ever again - epsecially for a regular season game - except if they are the sacrifical lamb for other team.

Meh, give me FCS / DII Playoff games that actually mean something any day over these glorified exhibitions.

I don't know anything more about Arkansas State than I do about Eastern Washington.  I miight as well go for the intensity and meaningful results of a semifinal playoff game.

but I bet SDSU is going to roll. Houston wanted to make the playoff, faded down the stretch as that dream faded and as rumors that Herman would leave, and then finally lost their HC. I think SDSU wins big. 42-14

Agreed.

I'm guessing Houston is going to play like they don't want to be there. They had playoff / NY6 aspirations, faltered down the stretch, and lost their coach. They're in a bowl game that no one cares about.

SDSU has one of the best RBs in the country and I bet he runs all over Houston today.
