Bowl Projections after Week 1-Plus One Note on Potential Location Issue

Submitted by jimmyshi03 on

Saw a couple of Bowl Projections, but one included a potantially intersting note that might effect where Michigan gets sent:

SI: Fiesta Bowl against LSU

SEC Country: Outback against LSU

CBS: Holiday against Oregon

Jerry Palm writes the following regarding his projection (FWIW, he had picked Florida to win last week):

I am hearing from a lot of Michigan fans complaining that I am disrespecting the Wolverines by projecting them to the Holiday Bowl instead of something like the Citrus or Outback.  (Others complain that I do not have them winning the Super Bowl, but this explanation is not for them.)  With the new bowl agreements three years ago, Big Ten bowl pairings outside of the CFP and New Year's Six games are no longer based primarily on merit.  Instead, factors like how often and how recently a team has been to a particular game -- or even a state or region -- plays as big a role, if not a bigger one.

Michigan has been to Florida bowl games the last two seasons.  If the Wolverines are not in the CFP or a New Year's Six game, it is very unlikely they will be sent to Florida again, regardless of their record or conference standing.

All three sites where I found projections had three B1G in the playoff or NY6. SI had the conference shut out of the playoff (it currently projects Oklahoma in, perhaps a giveaway for their prediction on Saturday's game) with the two others having OSU in the playoff and Penn State and Wisconsin in the NY6.

Game 1 answered a lot of questions I had about the team, I now favor us at PSU and hosting OSU, instead of splitting. I like our chances to win the B1G this year, or barring unforeseen circumstances like injury/turnover Gods, showing well enough to be the wildcard team that sneaks into the new years 6.

From my POV, even splitting would be enough, since I think our teams likelihood of winning an ugly game instead of dropping one is much higher than theirs, and we already escaped our tough road test. I think it's likelier that OSU or PSU shits the bed once or twice than it is for us, now, so even splitting we could still win the conference.

There is definitely a HIGH amount of variance in predicting football games, but I believe our coaches are the best equipped of the 3 teams to minimize and overcome that variance, and give us the most avenues to win. OSU can't pass, PSU is coached by James Franklin. I wouldn't put faith on it, but I'd put money on it.

Our defense will be amazing again, but I still haven't seen Speight have a good road/neutral site game yet against a good defense.  A night game at PSU would be a great time to prove me wrong, but I honestly have my reservations until I see it.  I think he'll be fine at home and I still think that will be for a spot in Indy, so I'm still confident he can get us there.

We will beat PSU pretty easily in my opinion and OSU will be a close one ... I thought we would go undefeated before the season so I’m not wavering on that ....

If the Florida game wasn't a fluke (except for Speight's inaccuracy, which I hope WAS a fluke), I would expect Michigan to lose one of Penn State/Wisconsin. Just doesn't seem likely that a team this young wins both of those on the road. Assuming that's the case, the season will come down to 10-1 against Ohio State...again.

Is there any chance Michigan could play in the Peach Bowl or is that for ACC/SEC teams? I don't recall B1G teams playing in that game. It would be sweet to see Michigan play in the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium, plus Atlanta is easy to get to.

The Peach Bowl is an "Access Bowl," so it does not have any conference tie-ins.  It is entirely possible that a Big Ten team ends up there.  As a matter of fact, I think if Michigan ends the season ranked between #5 and #11, the Peach Bowl might be the most likely destination.  The bad news is that the most likely opponent would be USF in that scenario, since they seem to be destined to be the #1 "G5" team.

If we aren't in the CFP or Rose (not sure if that bowl is part of the playoffs this season) then this would be my personal best case scenario. I wouldn't mind playing USF. It's always nice to win bowl games. Too bad Taggert isn't there any longer.

Only reason I remembered that is because I couldn't figure out why there was a bowl game in a crappy baseball stadium.

I just looked it up on Wikipedia to confirm, and it looks like the B1G played there a few times.  Purdue (1978 & 1984), Iowa (1982 & 1988), Indiana (1987 and 1990) and Illinois (1985) all played in the game.

Oh lord. Not this shit again. We really don't need a weekly bowl projection thread. All you're doing is giving these useless articles web clicks, thus encouraging the writers to keep making this garbage again. Seriously....enough.

Holy hell it is week 1. The D looked fast and mean against Florida but we all know firsthand how bad Nuss is. There is a long way to go.

Too many people are ignoring the OP's fine print about the Holiday bowl. If I were a 2nd-3rd place Big Ten team and relegated to the Holiday Bowl, I'd be kind of pissed. That's an anti-meritocracy.

Dumb.

Bowl projections after one game serve only one purpose: Ad impressions.

They are easier to proffer than pithy analysis of the games last weekend, so lazy ad-motivated sites have them.

Should have won, could have won. It's in the past where it belongs. It's irrelevant now. Don't look to the past, look to the future. But with that said, I had predicted a loss to both psu and o$u and I am sticking to my guns. Speight got scared at the night game at Iowa and I can't imagine what the psu environment will do to him. It's quite evident to me after the Florida game that he still has a lot of work to do. And Harbaugh is sticking with him so he's the best we have. As for o$u, I've said it before and I'll say it again. I'll believe it when I see it. Until then, automatic loss.

Woah, let's slow our roll here.  We still don't know how bad Florida's offense really sucks.

Let's see how we look against an offense with a pulse before we worry about CFP and NY6 bowl games.

Take nothing for granted. Michigan is bound to have a weird Iowa-type game where it's 50/50, and beating Michigan would make the season for MSU (and Indiana, Minnesota, Maryland as well), so I would expect them to be playing out of of their minds and get their best shots. It's going to be an interesting ride.
