Bowl projections, 12/8/13 (updated)

Submitted by dnak438 on

Jason Kirk over at SB Nation projects Michigan vs. Kansas State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl in Phoenix on December 28th.

Sports Illustrated suggests Michigan vs. Georgia in the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville on January 1st.

Thoughts? Both teams are probably better than Michigan, although Georgia won't have Aaron Murray (torn ACL).

EDIT: ESPN is also predicting that Michigan will be picked by the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (LINK).

UPDATE: Michigan and Nebraska, Georgia, Texas A&M and LSU in the mix for the Gator Bowl (LINK)

I have a cousin who is a Georgia fan.  We texted etc. as both of our teams tanked over the course of the season.  We have had a running joke that Michigan and Georgia would play in some crappy bowl, and that the game would boil down to who can get out of their own way long enough to find the endzone.  Would just be funny if it happened.

A bowl game at this point is about practice and recruiting. Give us a name brand team, one that will put stars in the eyes of recruits. Recruits dont come to Michigan to play the likes of KSU in bowl games. I have no doubt we will beat a team like Georgia. Michigan will come out ready to dominate after the heartbreaker with OSU.

I was using the advanced statistics:

  • FEIplus: Georgia #21, KSU #25, Michigan #35
  • S&P: Georgia #16, KSU #29, Michigan #41
  • FEI: Georgia #15, KSU #29, Michigan #32

Not that they are perfect, but given that I haven't watched a lot of Georgia or Kansas State this year, the advanced stats seem preferable to my gut feeling.

When the bottom two teams in the SEC can play in their league championship without any negative reflection on the league, they are valued more top to bottom from a perception standpoint.  A win over an SEC team goes farther than a win over a middle of the pack Big 12 team from a perception standpoint.  If Purdue played Minnesota for the Big 10 title it would be viewed as evidence of how weak the Big 10 is.

In the world of rankings, perception is reality.

I'd rather see us take on kansas State. It's obvious that Georgia is the better TV matchup but if we're looking for a game we can win and/or manage more easily then I think KSU is the better option. There is always the chance that georgia could beat us up and we want to finish the season on a high note.

sounds like something played at Ford Field on December 26th against the MAC champion. While it's boring having played there twice so recently, I'd still rather play in the Gator against an SEC team.

Gator Bowl is on opposite three other bowl games, all of which I'd probably like to see.

BWW Bowl has its own slot. Probably get a better-grade announcing team, though, although last year it was Nessler/Blackledge which I'm a little weary of.

I prefer the Gator Bowl, because the name "Gator Bowl" actually carries some weight. It's not an elite bowl game, but it's more recognizable and historic than say the Pinstripe Bowl or Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. At least it's a respectable name against a respectable opponent. Playing Georgia will provide a measuring stick to compare the quality of our athletes to an SEC team's athletes. I thought we stacked up decently last year against South Carolina. Another decent performance against SEC competition would provide some optimism going into next year, given the number of returning starters we have.

I think it did give us confidence going into the season, and then we lost it. We looked like the same team against ND that we were against SC in the bowl. However, we decided we were going to completely change and be a ground & pound team at some point after the ND game. Hopefully the coaches realize we're a much better team when they let Gardner spread it out and do his thing (see SC, ND, OSU games). Hopefully they take that strategy and deploy it in the bowl game and into next season.

At least it's still got "Gator Bowl" in it, and the Gator Bowl has been around forever. Every bowl game has a sponsor, but I hate when they flat out change the name. For example, the BW3 bowl used to be the Copper Bowl. I'd recognize it if it were called "The Buffalo Wild Wings Copper Bowl." However, I had no idea it used to be the Copper Bowl until I googled it.

Some Buckeye in-laws of my Sparty brother are claiming that MSU will be in the NC game against FSU. I'd guess their reasoning is that anybody good enough to beat Urban Meyer should automatically get the nod.

It's not bad... my brother's just a prof up at MSU, and he didn't go to school there himself. He's not a dick about it, and has had plenty of critical comments about Dantonio in the past.

He was just moaning about the idiot couch-burners this morning.

Just as long as it isn't Arizona or Texas.  I just can't take the circus that would ensue on here.

Georgia and KState would both be good matchups, though.

Does Ohio State play Alabama or Missouri?

I'd rather see us go up against a Big XII team for once. I'm a little tired of seeing us play and SEC team in the gator bowl/outback bowl since that's been our second home quite a few times in the last 16 years.

I've got the best if both worlds. If Gator I'm playing Sawgrass and if BWW I'm meeting up with a buddy who I haven't seen in forever that lives in Tempe and playing TPC Scottsdale.

This is pretty irrelevant, but Georgia's new starting QB Hutson Mason was a 3-star to Rivals a few years ago. He was in Rivals' top 75 best players in the state of Georgia...at #75. He has pretty good stats for the Bulldogs, though.

If I was Braxton Miller, I would seriously think about going to the NFL.  Four new starters on their Oline next year, basically = Michigan 2013., when you think about what we lost on the interior.  Plus, from what I remember, I don't think their Oline recruiting has been very good.  I can't see him having the year he had this year, even with the injury figured in.  I like our chances next year, and if I were Braxton, I would take the millions and run.  The only reason he would have motivation for coming back is B1G championship / national title, and I really don't see it happening with what's coming back for Ohio.

Is Braxton even projected to go early enough to make sense to leave early? ESPN (I know, not the most reliable) has him 116th overall, which puts him in the early 4th round. That should put him around a $500k signing bonus and a 4-year, $2.5 million deal. If he falls to the 7th round after returning, it's more like 4-year, $2.25 million salary and a $50k signing bonus. So really, he wouldn't be sacrificing much by returning, especially considering many deals in the 4th round and beyond are negotiated to pay the player significantly less if they aren't on the 53-man roster, which Braxton may not make unless he makes big strides in preseason workouts on his passing skills (or makes a position switch without the on-field looks Denard had at the end of last season).

Yeah, but right now dual threats are all the rage in the NFL with RGIII, Russell Wilson, Coiin Kapernick, etc.  Even if he comes back to improve on his passing skills, with what will be a rebuilding Oline, I don't see him having a great year.  I could see a Devin 2013 repeat and that certainly wouldn't help his stock.

Blue from Ohio

I agree, a win over LSU would be huge.  If we lose, people will just say it's B1G losing to SEC and Michigan is still rebuilding under Hoke, but if we win, it can really sway perception for the program and even further recruiting.

Whether KSU, LSU, Georgia, or A&M, we should have a real chance in any of them.

KSU - solid but beatable.

Georgia - injured.

LSU - injured and questionable defense.

A&M - defense worse than Ohio State.

The LSU storylines would be either interesting or annoying, depending on how they take it.
