Bowl outrage: How the F did it get this way?

Submitted by wolverine1987 on
I'll start off this post by saying two things. First, this post is not meant as yet another "BCS system sucks, playoffs are the only rational choice" thread. For the purposes of this post, the system we have is the only one we have. Secondly, for reasons that will become quickly apparent, "get off my lawn." Out of the all things that bother me about the current bowl setup, the thing that grinds me the most is the schedule. Two things in particular. First, the shift away from the tried and true tradition of having all the major bowls play on Jan.1. Second, the IMO outrage of having minor bowls all of a sudden get to play post January 1 games. Here is the list of bowl games played between January 1 and January 7: 1/1: Outback, Gator, Capital One, Rose, Sugar. Ok, admittedly not so bad yet. But: 1/2: International, Papa Johns, Cotton, Liberty, Alamo. Really? 1/4; Fiesta 1/5: Orange 1/6: GMAC. Huh? 1/7; BCS Championship Are there not enough days in December for the GMAC, Papa Johns and the rest to play? Would not a better schedule be: 1/1: Rose, Fiesta, Orange, Sugar. 1/7: BCS Championship Now I don't mind throwing out a tradition, if it is replaced by something better (I can hear you saying "playoffs" and I agree sort of but have to adhere to the premise of this post). But how in the hell is this bowl schedule better than what we had? Part of the bowl tradition was the later you played, the better game you were in. And all the best teams and games played New Year's Day. And nothing was better IMO that watching the major bowl games all together in a one day orgy of: - morning hangover cures - followed by hair of the dog - lunch nachos and wings - renewed drinking all day - and watching 4 great Bowl games. The reason for the 1/7 game is obvious. But why in God's name did we have to let the meek (bowls) inherit the earth? I'll repeat: 4 bowls on January 1, and that's all I will tolerate. Someone make this happen quickly and I will reward you with riches beyond your wildest dreams. For most of you, that means a date. With a girl. My lawn is crowded, please vacate it.

you have a week between the national title and jan 1. after jan 1 all the lesser bowls just act as filler until the national title game. what else are we as fans going to do for a week? i agree that is a little messed up but at least this way we wont be bored

is how Mark Ingram escaped to Alabama. I realize he didn't have ties to M and there wasn't much interest but how shitty is it watching him run all over the Florida defense knowing he grew up in our backyard? Damn ...

And although I am all in for RR I must admit there is something about DOMINATING the line of scrimmage and watching 8 minute drives tic off the clock. Watching Stanford pound ND with a fullback and there white Minotar at tailback made me long for Tim Biakabutuka, Ty Wheatley and A-Train. The good news is that RR's form of spread does utilize more run and ball control (unlike Kellys) but by no means is it "power" football. I want to give this to 2011 but where I was was convinced RR would make this work I wonder now and lust for Harbaugh and that attitude.

Hopefully this is just a minor blip for this year because New Year's Day is on Friday. The networks didn't want to leave a Saturday (01/02) open without football (although the NFL playoffs will have started). GMAC on 01/06 is just ridiculous.

I barely watch any of the games after Jan 1. However, I watch almost every game between Christmas and NYE due to having the week off and lots of free time. Are the ratings for a prime time Jan 5 game that much higher than one on Dec 28? I guess I don't really get it, but there must be something to it.

JPQ is correct, there are 34 bowls, that's still 68 teams playing. I wouldn't mind all the lesser bowls before and up to Jan 1, and Orange 1/2, Sugar 1/3, Fiesta 1/4 , Rose 1/5 a day of rest for the liver and then the NC game.

I am in total agreement. When all of the big time games were on the same day it was an orgasmic occasion. You were showered with great game after great game. It was the best day of the year by far if you are a fan of sports let alone college football.

I don't have any solutions to your problem, but...could you hook me up anyway? I mean, I AM posting to a football message board at 9:17 PM on a Saturday night for crying out loud!

yeah, since when and why did all of those get scheduled on january 2nd? A few years ago International, Papa Johns, Liberty, Alamo, and GMAC were all some of the earliest bowls to be played! I remember because Michigan played Nebraska in the Alamo in December! And should be in December because they're lesser bowls! I don't want to watch Air Force play Bowling Green on January 2nd!

I agree with your post. I was surprised to see that many of the "second tier" bowls will be played after January 1. As you said, there are many days in December to play those. I am sure money is a factor, but December 26th-December 31st seems like a good time period to play these games. Oh well, we live in an imperfect world.
